As a NYer I was actually working in VA at the time when it happened. I immediately called all my family to check on them. Some could see the smoke from their houses. Driving on the highway, the sky seemed so eerie not seeing any planes at all. I still get emotional when I see the video and I still get emotional every time I go down to the reflecting pools. There is tremendous energy there *edit was for using speech to text. Fixing some errors

Me and my daughter took a trip to NYC a few months ago. She's 12 years old and didn't know much about 9/11. She asked me why there were so many names and what happened. My mind reverted back to the news reports and the horrors of the things we saw that day and I almost immediately began to break down emotionally when I started talking about it. I'm happy that she wasn't born until 9 years after that day and wasn't witness to it (I even told her as much). I couldn't begin to fathom what it would've been like if I was there that day.

Like a phoenix from the ashes. In a lot of ways, the Freedom Tower is like a metaphor for America. Even though we lost one thing, we gained a new one. The Twin Towers will always be remembered and one World Trade Center is now, like the Statue of Liberty or the Brooklyn Bridge, an icon of the New York landscape. When tourists visit, they go to the top of the building and take pictures of it, which in it of itself, is remembering those who died that day.

As heartwarming as it is the World Trade Center has been rebuilt and lower Manhattan isn’t so empty. It’s painful seeing what used to be and how the new WTC is a sad skeletal imitation of what used to be, not rebuilding the twin towers was a colossal mistake and shows how damaged the city and country remains 20+ years on. Th wonky saving grace is the memorial and pools which imo adequately represent what a memorial should do.

A disadvantage of rebuilding the towers is: It could have been a constantly disturbing reminder of the tragedy of 2001. People would have constant PTSD attacks remembering the burning towers and the planes crashing into them.
@dng2000

I still think WTC should have been rebuilt with twin towers and it has proven there is enough space to build new twin towers at least the same size as the original ones without standing in the way of the WTC memorial pools and the museum, except for maybe the shadows depending on where the sun shines.

The twin towers were such beautiful buildings, they didn’t deserve to be brought down by a bunch of heartless, cowardly terrorists. I was only 3 years old on the day they were destroyed. My mom and dad hoped to take me to visit the Twin Towers as I got older, but sadly that never came to be because of 9/11. I think my 4 or 5-year old self would’ve been scared at first by their tall, gigantic, monolith-like appearance, but eventually I would fall in love with them as time would go on. Just imagine how different movies and TV shows from today set in NYC would be had 9/11 never happened. We would’ve seen Iron Man, Spider-Man, etc. waltz around the Twin Towers defending the city from bad guys in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We would’ve seen them in music videos set NYC such as Eminem’s “Not Afraid”, and Plain White T’s “Hey There Delilah”. They also would’ve still appeared in shows such as Law & Order: SVU, The Supranos, and Sex and The City.

I'm glad you're interested in 9/11 even though you were born after it happened. Many people born after it don't care about it at all and or understand how it changed the world. I was 10 years old in the 5th grade living in Houston when 9/11 happened. My teacher walked into the class room after lunch and told the whole class what happened. Once she told us what happened everyone in my class was ready to get home to look at the news to see what happened. Even if someone didn't wanna see what happened they had to see what happened because EVERY CHANNEL was replaying the events. I'll never forget getting back home and watching the towers fall down. It was like something out of a movie. It was a weird time to live in because no one knew if there would be more attacks where they lived. Then all of a sudden my school started getting a bunch of kids from Afghanistan and Pakistan. The kids came to the United States because Bush said America will retaliate against the terrorists. But anyway enough of me going on I'm just letting you know how it was from someone who was alive to live in that time.

The reality is that American government consisting of the congress, senate and the presidential office, both the Democrats and Republicans wanted this attack to happen to line their pockets with American and other Western countries taxpayer money. Those politicians before and after continued the scam. First it was the War on Communist, then Terrorism, and now China. Still think the originals should be built because it still feels empty. It makes you feel defeated in a way, because they won. Sure, rebuilding them wouldn't bring back the ones that were lost, but why have the victims remeberance be kinda shadowed in defeat cast to be forgotten to time slowly? They would be more popular then ever if rebuilt. Maybe they didn't want the impact of the event to be lost thinking people wouldn't care as much if they were rebuilt, but I think that's the opposite, and they could've done it in a really respectful way. I would've liked if they did move them because they shouldn't of been put back right there, but they could've (before they built everything else) moved them back a bit. Still could've had the pools and everything. Could've had them lined up so when the pool lights are on they kinda cast a blue shadow making the towers from the right angle look almost ghostly poking through the light, and could've even surrounded the buildings with that effect so any angle you look it you can see it. They even could've instead of putting the antenna on the north tower put a giant ass flag with all the names of everyone lost on it mixed in with a design of the American flag, or something. Instead, we get 2 pools that you can't even see in the day unless you go there. It makes people kinda like me who never saw them forget they ever existed. It also takes away from the true size they really were which would also remind people of, not only impressively huge they were, but also how terrible it must of been having to fall, and be stuck to die in something that high up. That is just something the pools don't do, nor does the new wtc as you don't think about it. A memorial like that would've always let you know they existed, and if done right could remind people more of that day, and that the towers stood, and can stand again though healing, and determination, but the people that died that day can never be replaced, and I don't feel rebuilding the towers would make anyone feel like those were replaced. If anything, it might even bring feelings in harder being able to see the buildings be replaced, but not the people. Seeing those towers again would always remind everyone of that day, and of those people no matter where you are in New York, but now you look and most probably who were not here before that day forget a lot they ever existed. This is why I do not like the new building, and them constantly saying they rebuilt it, because you didn't. Sure, if looking at it right you kinda see the towers in the design, but if you don't actually know what your looking at, then it just looks like every other modern building covered in fancy glass around the world. Sure, they gave us a museum to see pieces of the towers, and pictures of the day, but outside of ground zero you don’t really think about it if you weren’t alive then to know what was before. The Statue of Liberty can be seen from several different places, and even if time has caught up to it in terms of hight, it still is really visible, and it gets the point across our country wants you to be reminded about. That’s why the towers should’ve came back because it’s more impactful to remind, and be more then just a memorial. It would be a symbol. Just like the White House, and any other important buildings like the capitol. We rebuilt the White House once, so I don’t see why the towers should be left to be forgotten in time. You can argue the freedom tower is that, but I just don’t see it. Just looks transparent, and most of the proposed memorial was removed.

I really would've loved to see the One World Trade Center be scaled up to 2,736' tall including spire, (the height of both twin towers in a single building) since then it would be the tallest structure on Earth upon completion just like the originals were, and would absolutely dominate the NY skyline. I also really liked the idea of rebuilding the twins in some capacity. The design we got was a huge compromise, and for as much as I love the Freedom Tower I just wish it would've been bigger to show the terrorists more of a statement.

Part of me thinks they should of rebuilt them exactly as they were but stronger, as a mark of strength and resilience of the American people. The other part of me is glad they didn’t, as this is also a mark of disrespect to those who died and an act of erasing what happened. It will never be the same, so it shouldn’t be forced to appear that way. I feel Freedom tower does seem a bit lonely, standing alone, they need to give it a twin, it would complete the Trade Centre and New York skyline, I think. Life is constantly changing into something we want it to be, to something else, we just have to ker going and move forward. Remember but don’t look back. Such a tragic shame and still, 21 years later, devastating!

I take pride in the fact that my father was part of the team that worked with Yamasaki in designing the original twin towers. He worked with him in the 40's and again in the 60's as an architect / structural engineer. As an apprentice at Albert Kahn and Assoc. in the 30's, Albert Kahn asked my father a question that will be forever be cut in stone in my mind. The question was: "What is the Difference between an Architect and a Draftsman?" The answer: "The Architect is the one with the client!"

This tiny 8 inch Tube TV was always on in the morning with my parents watching the morning news. we ended up going to school for a few hours but then they closed it and we all went home. I had no idea what we were even watching just that we didnt have to finish school that day. i was so confused, all the teachers kept saying we were under attack and didn't want to let us go to recess to play on the playground i just knew we were thousands of miles away and it didn't make sense to me.
