In 1983 the video game industry is in peril. An over-saturated market of third-party software games resulted in a $3 billion loss. But, in 1985, an old playing card company stepped in to save the day... with a robot named R.O.B.

The title makes it seem like Rob was hugely influential, outside of the greater toy - angled marketing push (the latter I feel deserves more credit as it still influences Nintendo's choices). While I can't track down sales data, I feel like significantly less were sold as I've never seen one irl amongst my fellow children of the '80s.
@the_letter_b
@the_letter_b 4 года назад
I had one but yeah, none of my friends did nor did any care. The few games for it were crap and it was difficult to get working properly. I think what did it for Nintendo was the massive amount of hype around it, Nintendo Power, Nintendo related cartoons, cereal, etc., the games themselves being incredibly iconic unlike Atari games, and it wasn't crazy expensive like getting a computer just to play computer games was at that time (and still that's true).
@relo999
@relo999 2 года назад
@@the_letter_b And even the claim that it "saved the gaming industry" is a false claim. PC gaming in the US at the time was fine, Japan's industry was fine, Europe's industry was fine. The only thing the NES did to quickly recoup console gaming market by an angled marketing push by moving away from it being a stereotypical games machine and it being more family friendly (as arcades at the time weren't seen as being particularly child friendly places). Something both the Family Computer (the NES in Japan) and it's competitors already where. As for PC gaming being expensive, consoles like the NES where roughly on par in price (and later in it's life more expensive) than your atari 8 bit, sinclair and other more budget friendly micro computers. And while the US mostly stuck with floppies (for some reason), tapes where dirt cheap often less than a 10th of the price of a Atari or NES cart (and floppies where also significantly cheaper). Granted the big name computers, unlike Europe, where mostly expensive business work horses rather than sold on the idea of "little Timmy can do his homework on this machine and teach him how to use a computer for in the future" like most computers in Europe around the time of the NES release in the US. The whole idea that ROB and/or Nintendo save the gaming industry is just a nice myth but rather far from the truth.

Great video, just has one problem... The Nes didn't Save the gaming industry, and the only thing it did was monopolize the north american market. Here in brazil, in europe and other parts of the world the crash never happened and nintendo was just another gaming company. Heck, nintendo only came to officially brazil in 1993, and the brazilian version of the Nes sold poorly when compared to other consoles at the time.

Who Rob? Well yeah, if you'd like to call it click bait (I'd like to call it more like deception). The reason for Rob was to deceive parents into believing it was a toy and not a console due to Atari's screw up of the market. So Nintendo brought the Video game market back from disaster, and afterwards Rob was discontinued. But it was nice for the time, the blaster, Rob, and the power glove.

There is one noticeable error in the video. Nintendo didn’t move in to other ventures because the money from playing cards allowed them to it was because the company realized that the market was limited and that they would need to move on to other ventures to increase profits.

As someone who was 15 in 1983 and a huge gamer I can tell you there was never a “crash”. Were there lots of crappy games getting released? Sure, but the same can be said for any year from 1972 to the present day. This over exaggerated myth is perpetrated by Nintendo fans who either weren’t alive then or were little kids and had an NES as their first system so they’re nostalgic about it.

From a Customers point of view there never was a crash. You could by Games very cheap which was great. Even if a Game was terrible you didnt spent much money on it. So it wasn´t a big deal. But from a developers point of view the Crash was huge. You couldn´t earn much money with Video Games anymore.

No retailer would touch anything even resembling a video game console back at that point. The only reason Nintendo was able to get on store shelves was by marketing R.O.B. to retailers, because there was a robot fad going on at the time, thanks to the TOMY Omnibots line. You can compare R.O.B. with an Omnibot 2000 to see the resemblance. Once established on the Shelves, Nintendo had no more need for R.O.B., and only sold the console after that.

It is kind of confusing when you are talking about the gaming crash but you are showing Nintendo products considering Nintendo is what ended the gaming crash and wasn't present in America at the time of the crash. I feel like at most that robot set Nintendo up to break into the market but it hardly made Nintendo into the success that it was. That robot sucked ass and they only made a couple games for it specifically. What made Nintendo great was that it has great games. Set it next to an Atari and there was no comparison. Nintendo just had way better tech and ideas

The video is a bit misleading. Yes R.O.B was the number one reason in the report to as of why kids wanted the NES but it stood at only 19%. The second biggest reason was the quality of graphics at 17%. There were a myriad of reasons why kids wanted the NES but R.O.B. certainly didn't hurt.
