How Normalization is Hurting You and Hurting Society

What is normalization and why does it hurt you and society? Normal is whatever conforms to a standard, is usual, typical or expected. The thing is, normal is not a measure of health. This is why the famous quote by Krishnamurti “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society” is so important. Normal can become a blinder through which we see the world. It can be a way of staying in denial, remaining unconscious and never being able to heal or progress.

It's normalised to make fun of children's mistakes when they learn how to speak, walk etc. Some of my earliest memories are my parents and family members laughing at my face in the middle of a conversation when I mispronounced a word and they find it funny. It's something every adult does! It's not mean. But the consequences was me closing up to people, feeling deeply ashamed of my mistakes to the point that I dreaded even trying things that could make me being laughed at. As I'm typing this I expect people to think of me as abnormally susceptible... Am I?

I didn't have to dig up everything that my parents did "wrong" when they were raising me to heal from drug addiction. I just had to let go of my resentments towards them by accepting them for who they were. Its not complicated. You don't need to pin point the exact event that might have led to an unhealthy habit pattern. You change it by identifying the root emotion behind it i.e. fear, pride, selfishness, etc. and then repeatedly choosing its opposite.

@Alexandra Ledesman - Agree. The more I learn the more it seems that the majority of people experience some trauma growing up. Obviously the degree of trauma varies greatly between people. It's good however to become aware and "intellectually explore" these deeper things as you said, as it at least gives us a better chance of overcoming problems from the past. Too many are not only not aware, but don't want to be aware for fear, so they keep reacting in the same dysfunctional ways and pass it on to their kids etc......

when I was 3 years old i told my mom i was in love with a kid the same age as me who went to kindergarten with me. she made fun of me and dismissed my feelings as a joke. then she told it to my brother and they all laughted at me. that single "small" incident is the reason why to this day (i'm 24) i'm unable to see my feelings for my romantic partners and close friends as valid, i'm unable to express love to them in an healthy way for the fear of being ridiculed. when it's time to be vulnerable, i pretend i just don't have strong feelings for other people and this is why people who are close to me think i don't care about them. to this day, my mom always shames me for being emotionally distant with people, which is something she caused. she also tells me she wishes i was like other women and that i'm too manly.

tash and you are certain that just one incident - however devastating it was - is responsible for all your suffering? If your story is representative of your mother dismantling you in subtle and not so subtle ways it may be time to spend time away from her, to give yourself space to heal. Because as Teal said, just because it was not criminal neglect it is still suffering. As grown ups we need to heal ourselves, because there is no-one else to do it.

I met my biological father just a couple years ago. Before that, I didn’t know much about him. I learned that he has been in prison for the last 17 years for child molestation. I was shocked and horrified to hear this, and initially wanted nothing to do with him. Child sexual abuse has always been a topic that I just could not comprehend. It upsets me so much, and I have spent a fair amount of time wondering how the hell anybody could possibly want to do such a thing? Well, one day I felt compelled to ask my bio dad and find out. I asked him to tell me his life’s story, everything, because I wanted to know what kind of life someone who committed that disgusting of a crime must have lived to ever allow themselves to harm a child in that way? He told me all about his childhood and everything in great detail via hundreds of letters, which I’m grateful for. Such a tragic story of heinous abuse and exploitation. It’s true that many perpetrators were once innocent victims themselves. This video brings to mind something he said to me when I visited him at the prison “You know, it happened to me, it happened to my aunt and my cousins... This sort of thing used to happen all the time back in the day... I didn’t think it was that big of a deal.” A very good example of how normalization can be extremely dangerous. Thank you teal for another amazing video! This is such an important concept that I hope society awakens to as soon as possible. When, during my early-to-mid twenties, I started to recognise, reflect and process the emotional (and other) traumas of my childhood I made several vows to myself including to try to recognise abhorrent behaviour even when it came under the guise of normalcy. I have also tried to always be as true and authentic with myself and those I connect with as I possibly can. As the video makes clear, blinding oneself through normalcy is a form of self-deception and I'd already had enough of that during my childhood.

I remember when I was a kid in the early 60s it was normal to say the "n" word when talking about black people and no one batted an eye, smoking was allowed almost everywhere, and teachers could slap or hit you almost for no reason and no one would bat an eye to it, I had a teacher that grabbed me by the hair and violently shake me for being late coming in from recess. When my mom was a kid it was normal for girls to drop out of school to become wives, education wasn't important for females.

I would say it could been normal but to use that word still would had been considered to use the old-fashioned term "fightin' words".

In otherwords you called a black person that in the North in the sixties be prepared to have a fight with him.

This is a good message. People are telling me to accept the authoritarian covid surveillance measures because "we're already tracked and traced 24/7 by our smartphones", which has only been 'normal' for about ten years and I had a problem with that when it was new as well.

I started disliking norms 10 years ago. People called me negative, but I felt like a realist. Bad things were totally normal in my life, it was my reality. I still believed my life was normal 2 years ago. My psychologist literally said "It must have been hard living a childhood like yours". I didn't think so, I was okay with my childhood. I minimized the hardships I had to go through. I only realised this year that nothing was okay. Since then I've been overwhelmed with anger, sadness and mostly grief. Processing it is the hardest thing I ever had to do. Also, it breaks my heart to see what kind of society we're living in. I really hope that my generation will have the means to change it for good.

This video is an affirmation for me when earlier this month my parents and I were fighting over lots of things and having a hard time restoring peace with each other. Now I see what I was doing was trying to break the norms between me and my parents that had been kept as it was for some 20 years... Thanks Teal you are a true fighter for change and have encouraged me in big ways🙏❤️

One thing that always made me stand out or more like stand in the corner at school was that I never normalised the horrible machine-like rules that so many other kids followed without questioning. I used to run out, never did home tasks/work, never listened to a teacher when I was in my fantasy world. I became a total loser in other people's eyes and it took me another 25 years to recover from the trauma of being different, but the truth is that at least I recognise when something is not right.

I am sorry people dont take you serious and have a lot empathy. It breaks my heart in fact that they criticize u for the way you live your life which absolutely doesn't harm anyone. I dont get it why people have to blame the victim. This is a common issue among the victims of EVERY abuse. I see the hurt when you talk about it. But i see a strength that is actually unbelievably strong. You survived UNBELIEVABLE things. So people blame you and ur sanity. They really refuse to believe you out of their evil selfishness and you are a "threat" to their picture perfect delusion. They are the insane ones for denying the harsh reality of evil and life. And sadly most people chose evil because of "free will" allowed them to. Evil always deceives to control. They are deliberately ignorant and enjoy it. They feel above someone when they further stomp on them. But I believe you. 💛 Thank you for being you.

Coming here from Infinate waters. WOW....now this video is so on the mark!!! It is frightening what people have actually considered "normal", and still there are people accepting absurdities to this day, as "normal". "That's just the way it goes" is possibly one of the more dangerous phrases. When things go wrong is when people stop asking "why". When I was a little kid and I asked my mom why I could not wear a skirt, I was told it was not normal. What I raised how girls were able to have short hair and wear boy's clothes I was told another cop out. "That's different". I really should why to both of these things...but likely would have gotten, that's just the way things are.
