Is there a similar setup for the women to get drafted? Or do clubs have women sides?

@@raylewis937 Yes I believe most colleges/universities that have men’s teams will also have women’s teams (my school has both). However, the MLR is only men’s teams. But there are club men’s and women’s (D1-D4) teams around the country. So in the event you don’t get drafted, you can still continue to play as an adult.

@@minki46664 no but the likes of ellis genge, kyle sinclair, wp nel, kepu and dorian aldegheri would. You can cherry pick examples that don’t fit. And its funny how they’re all SA. That’s because they would never last 60 minutes of actual rugby. But the BS stopping, medics on, faking injury bullsh*t that your embarrassment of a coach plays makes it dead easy for your overweight and unfit props to play.

I like what the US is trying to do here but rugby is all about your technique and rugby thinking. When you watch some of that defence and stepping… it then becomes irrelevant how much they can bench. Will be interested to see where this goes though. Good concept.

Yes what called Gato tackling now. I played rug y England thier were no rules for tackling except no eyes or kneck. It was war we were trying to kill each other knock each other out went for the head. 1 st thing u did was play rugby school team vs school pe class so crybabies don't play. Rugby is all about rugby intelligence, experience and guile and not fitness tests, some of the best players i have played with are not the fittest or fastest but can read the game and are always in the right place at the right time and make the correct decisions. Rugby is most importantly a team game and working together and applying a strategic mindset game and not a tactical fitness battle.

I'm sorry but this is NOT the formula. Get a seasoned coach as Director of USA Rugby like Eddie Jones or Rassie. Let him implement the structures, bring in his coaching staff and watch what happens. If you have doubts on this approach, ask Japan

Man I wish this was a concept here in South Africa man ...I play with a few ex pros at my club and I can see I could've definitely made it abit further with rugby if I had the opportunity to showcase it but it's tough when you come from a small school in a farm area that don't get alot of attention ..I'm 25 rn beginning stages of my prime just wonder how far I could've taken it if there was a draft system which eliminates the big school vs small school debate and solely uses talent...would be a great addition to the game

Same here brother! I was the Tasman makos under 18/19 starting fullback, the players I started over were, Tima fianganuuku, Leicester fianganuuku, Jamie spowart and timoci tavatavanawi all of them are now professional here in nz but I had a kid at 16 and coaches figured I was no longer interested in being pro so I was overlooked once leaving the youth system

You can really see the NFL influence, not just in the drills but also in the running footwork, especially if the one on one instances. It’s good to see these guys making the change, the US could become a big player in world rugby.

NFL influence? Really? I don't think so! NFL has had no visible impact on Rugby union, or League. Why, and exactly how would a sport in which the action lasts for just 80 seconds maximum impact a game where the flow is continuous (unless a penalty is conceded), and lasts for the whole half. tactics do change at half time, and the biggest impact is now the inclusion of what are called impact players to close the opposition down at the end of the game. NFL influencing Rugby, NEVER going to happen. Just ask the owner of the team from Toronto if he uses plays from the NFL in either of his two rugby franchises for League or union, his answer has always been the other way around. His rugby league team are called Toronto wolf pack!

The influence of US Football is in the type of training. 80 seconds is nothing compared to the hours of practice which will ultimately have a greater influence using US Ftbl tactics. Not necessarily a good thing as the two sports are following an almost entirely different set of rules. Collision is a key word indicating similaities but essentielly not much more. The agressive and clever training of US Ft can bring about considerable change to the sport, but then again, it might not.

I think that 7's inclusion in the Olympics will push the pace and money needed to compete on the world level in 15's.

I think the concept is good, but it needs to have some different tests, as rugby is very different from the NFL. so extra tests around other traits will be needed. for the longevity of players etc. I Believe especialy with the differences with positions and shape differences. just my opinion.

6:26 That tackle was a bit dangerous... could've really injured the dude's neck. They should work on their defensive techniques to avoid awarding their opponents penalties the whole time. And that Caleb Strum dude looks like he has some potential, but he'll obviously need to pick up around 10kg's or so.

Rugby is very different to American football. A large reason why South Africa and New Zealand are so dominant is the philosophy and culture of rugby. It'll be interesting to see if the US can adapt to that to compete at the highest Level.

Talk of this happening to Ireland because of number of players coming through Leinster. Some of the Irish clubs are tripping up over talent while other ones lack quality in some key positions

Uhm we have something similar here in south africa but we don't do the draft thing but after the weekend thing the diffrent rugby clubs will go into talks with the different players to try and get them into the junior club teams.. Do do like test simular to this but there is also different top level coaches teaching them new skills and the make some mock teams up and then they play some games against each other to showcase their skills in a game

I think the draft is better so like if other countries outside America introduce the d1 system which means its easier for universities and clubs to scout. So like based of games and performances you might be a 5 star oe 1 star.

I work for a scout company that assists athletes getting into the universities. Even though this is for MLR , most coaches don't want stats like all the traditional American sports codes love, They want footage of the player playing and needs to stick AKA a Eben Etzebeth, Damian Mckenzie , Barrett brothers etc. MLR works close with the universities and they know what they want> Stats are good on paper but that means nothing in the game. The way MLR is going it will take a while to compete against the top teams but you never know what money can bring

I'm guessing they're introducing a draft for rugby because of the way the college system works? Not sure if it'll work for the international level. Most tier 1 and 2 teams in the world have grown great rugby culture from grassroots and high-school, developing rugby minds from a young age much like the American sports do but national teams are a whole different thing all together. The skill level is miles apart. But I digress, this can be nothing but positive for the growth of the game in the states and can't wait to see the athletes and development to come in the future. All of you complaining about these tests and drills are overdoing it. Things like speed in strength can be incredibly important to certain positions. People just see americans trying rugby and look to hate on it when we should really be happy that other countries are falling in love with the sport

If I were a coach for one of these teams, individual attributes, like the 40 meters sprint, bench press, or standing jump, are not what I would be looking at. Although attributes are needed, they don't show off a person's ability to play this sport. Drills and actual games do.

The US is actually pretty good at Sevens, so I'm not sure why they're going with 15's as their starting point. I do hope that a pro Sevens league can get going before too long though, and it would be a very good idea to launch the league right before a Summer Olympics year because Sevens is back in the Olympics now. NBC would ideally be the network to do this on- hype up the league and cross-promote the national team with all of their international competition. I hope we can get to a point where both a Sevens league and the MLR are popular and profitable- along with good success for a well supported national team, of course. I also very much hope that Hawai'i is able to have pro teams in both leagues and take the lead with bringing in talent at the University of Hawai'i. There's a lot of interest and talent on the islands, and they don't have any other pro sports. This could really be their thing.

I’m American and tbh it would be really confusing for people wanting to get into the sport if there are two or three different leagues for what they see as the same sport. An outsider looking in might initially assume that one is the main popular league and the other is something like what the XFL is to the NFL, it would be like if there was a 2v2 basketball league trying to coexist with the NBA. If rugby is gonna be successful in America and get even close to the popularity of the NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL there’s gonna need to be only one main league and since rugby union is the most popular version of the sport around the world that’s probably why they went with it

It's almost as if major US sports have conferences and draft systems to prevent one of those conferences from having a sustained, disproportionately higher level of player talent to the detriment of the league's long term health. Interesting. Something SANZAAR could've thought of perhaps.

Not sure if this will work for rugby given the nature of rugby means you can’t just look at a player’s athletic abilities as a metric of how good they are. Everything a player does comes down to their: 1) decision making (who to pass to and when to pass, who to tackle, what line to run, where I should align myself, to try and pilfer the ball or set up for defence, the list goes on forever); 2) ability to execute skills; and 3) communication and ability to lead and work with other players on the field. Being fast, fit and strong is excellent but the traits above are truly the most important.

played with a lot of extremely fast strong and fit guys who were just shit at playing rugby. The top 2 inches is where the game is played.

Draft systems are Illegal in most places ... ie restraint of free trade (bosman ruling in eeu)... Usa sports leagues / franchises have special exemptions from fair competition law in USA ... or obviously would be Illegal there too.

General upper body strength. People seem to imagine that rugby doesn't have certain metrics that they base players on in the gym, it does and it varies from team to team and national team to national team. The reason there are no rugby combines though is because of the school and academy system. But yea there are certainly gym lifts and strength levels that you must be at in certain positions to progress to be pro.

Bench press has little merit in scrummage wrong bio mechanics ,maybe some in mauling but that's more related to srummage bio mechanics again , merit in bridging at ruck and obviously lifting at lineouts

I think is will just be an American concept only. Most rugby playing nations have rugby from 5 year olds up, so talented players are spotted early. So having these type of try outs wouldn't be that productive.

I love this. I knew America was going to up the anti lol American sports fans are so stats driven honestly. Like yes, stats are good but it’s not everything…you guys over analyse every minute detail. But I like that about you…it’s just not something I feel the rest of the rugby world is that into…I could be wrong of cause. Love rugby and want to see it grow, and if this helps, then I guess I am all for it, however, drafts are in my opinion awful for sports. The way to grow a sport is to make it more available by having drafts and keeping the number of teams playing small you are reducing the growth potential of the sport. What you need to do is allow different regions to host leagues where the players can be paid, if the club can afford it, these teams can then compete for MLR spots. This increases the number of players playing at near the top level week in week out, and leads to the cream rising to the top. It also gives smaller teams the opportunity to rise out of obscurity and make a name for themselves and their communities, as well as growing the fan and support structure behind the sport.
