I love the enthusiasm yet I’m not sure it’s fair to say it’s the most exciting. It’s the most exciting for me because I live here. I went to every LA Giltinis game except one this year. The game experience is phenomenal. I think America and Canada are primed to gravitate towards this contact sport. The tickets are super cheap and the players are very humble and down to earth. Just good dudes. I watch an enormous amount of Rugby around the world and internationals. If MLR can control spending and keep some parity I think it will do very well. I think players long in the tooth will enjoy the adventure and can be instrumental in helping Rugby grow. 🇺🇸🇨🇦🏉

Irish rugby fan here. I really really hope rugby develops more and more in USA and Canada. I've been a lifelong rugby player and fan and would just love to see more countries compete at the top level. If the USA take rugby to their hearts, god help everyone else!!

Long in the tooth, llifelong Scottish fan here, ex-player and ex-referee. This is great to see and it's obvious the potential playing strength of the US is enormous. If the game really takes off and gets taken seriously by the sports fans I think the sky's the limit. The USA could conquer the rugby world, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand included. Sorry, how could I forget France?! In the early to mid 20th Century everyone used to whip France. Not for a long time. How France hasn't yet won the World Cup is beyond me.

Okay first i have to ask your RU-vid name is confusing me. Rugby League FAn, Rugby League is a different game. than Union. Rugby Union Fan are you? I hope the Rugby Culture remains down to earth. Rugby players are down to earth. I had a hard time watching it on T.V. with the Gladiatorial Commentary that clearly isnt very good. Culture shock. I hope Rugby Union and Rugby League (talking about both games) get popular in USA for the right reasons. Even the Name M.ajor L.eague R.ugby throws off the world sometimes cause Rugby League is a different game lol with different rules and amount of players on the pitch. Is World 7's even mentioned in MLR? and do Americans know about world series 7's?
@kingspeechless1607

@@unclemay6648 They do know about sevens; the USA has been more of a force in sevens rugby around the world and they have had some of the fastest finishers anywhere in that format. Their league rugby has some way to go yet. Some of the play I have seen looks a bit lacking in the scrummaging, tackling and defensive areas.

I'm a big MLR fan and I don't think it's the most exciting league in the world. But I'm not trying to generate clickbait by triggering rugby fans who hate the idea of Americans playing 'their' sport, or trying to hype up the upcoming MLR season, which is one of the few leagues in the world that can be watched free online anywhere. What makes the MLR fun is that you have a mix of ability and experience levels; foreign stars (if ageing), professional journeymen and North American internationals and a bunch of local semi pros with day jobs, some of whom are pretty new to the sport. Defences aren't great, the mindset is all about attacking and it's generously reffed to allow ambitious play. You see some mismatches between ex All Blacks and local semi-pros, but also some magic moments like an American in his third year of rugby who actually works as a juggler at kids parties making Ma'a Nonu look silly. It's just fun. No one is saying it's great quality. But it's really, really fun and the US system produces players that you just don't see in other leagues, like Giltinis winger John Ryberg, who's a powerlifter with freak speed. And the level is improving pretty rapidly.
@jeffjefferson3364
@jeffjefferson3364 2 года назад
That may be true for last year but 2 years before it was ridiculous to watch at times, the quality was so low. The quality has risen, and it'll rise again. This year won't be like last year and it shouldn't be. I enjoy the MLR I've been following since before the first match was played and this isn't about fun, though that's part of it, this is about preparing a team for 2031 rwc in the USA. That's the ultimate goal of world rugby and USA rugby.

I think anyone who doesn't want to see americans or new countries take up rugby aren't true fans of the sport. It's a game for everyone. That means everyone...! MLR still has a way to go to be competitive but be good to see some pre-season friendlies even if it were against Pro-D2 or academy teams. Get the general punter over in Ireland and the UK/France interested.

@@simoncampion4560 There's a certain type of nationalist rugby fan in the traditional rugby super powers who is dismissive of any attempt to grow the game in the US because deep down they look at the huge population base the States has, plus crossover athlete potential, and they're scared their own nation's team might lose prominence one day.

Don't knock something that is great to the Americans. Embrace and support it. America Rugby is doing its best to get American kids to think Rugby instead of basketball, American football and athletics and other things Americans dominant in. support them. look at Basketball, other countries are up there and competitive with America. Give America credits. Look at their 7s team. they are improving. I am a Samoan/All Blacks supporter all the way, but I am also proud of America, who are exploring rugby and provide entertainment to American rugby fans. Good on you America. only been 4 years, keep it up.👍♥️

Its defidently exciting to see players from all walks of life, coming together to play in this league and grow the game. I also like that the teams play different styles, and aren't confined to just one that works, like in a lot of international leagues. That being said, there is still a lot of work to do, on and off the pitch, if USA wants to become a true contender on the international stage.

The biggest hindrances to the USA really embracing Rugby: 1. Tradition: The Americans started playing "football" well before the laws/rules of any code had been canonized. This means that American football's roots run just as deep as Rugby's in any if its respective nations. As things stand now, there is no great reason for Americans to adopt another code, especially when we consider how deeply embedded the native sport already is. 2. Similarity: American football and Rugby are perhaps two of the most similar major sports one is likely to encounter. Supposing an American football fan came across a game of rugby; to him, it would merely be an odd form of American football. Why would he then invest his time and money into a product that is so similar to the one he is already a fan of? Association football ("soccer" in the US) has had marginal success due to America's large immigrant communities AND it is a code that dissimilar enough from American football as not to compete for the same athletes and viewership experience. 3. Infrastructure and Player development: There are little to no opportunities for children to learn the sport. The American system relies heavily on it's education system to develop talent. Without her schools teaching the sport (or having the facilities to even play it because a Rugby pitch is larger than an American football field), most American rugby players end up finding the sport sometime in their 20's. Which according to Mike Friday, is far too late for them to really develop a sense of the game. (Ideally, they would begin playing in earnest in their early teens.) Furthermore, there is a long established sport schedule in the US; Autumn is for football, Winter is for basketball, Spring/summer is for baseball. There is not really a void that rugby could fill in the US athletic calendar. 4.Talent Competition: The National Football League (NFL) is the wealthiest sports organization in the world. Professional rugby player contracts pale in caparison to even an average professional American footballer. When we consider the financial, along with the other factors of tradition and infrastructure, nearly all of America's top athletes are being funneled into spots in the NFL (or NBA). The best of the best make it, leaving the second tier of athletes for everything else including rugby. 5. Lack of Exposure: The average American is at best only vaguely aware of Rugby's existence. They are completely ignorant of the game's rules/laws, its rich history and traditions, or who the biggest names in the game are (even boy's on their national side). Rugby games are not aired on any of the major networks. There is virtually no commentary on the USA's rugby sides when they play, even for minor achievements. How do you grow a sport when nobody even knows that it exists? 6. Investment: New sports leagues do not have a great track record in the United states of success, the Major League Soccer (MLS) being the only notable exception. Investing in a new sports league is extremely risky. It makes more sense for an investor to buy into one of the lower European football clubs that are established than it is to buy into a brand new league with no fan base and no capital.

Most Exciting ? (remember 1924) :)

A lot of defensive naivity. You would not score those try's against a New Zealand, Australian or South African team, nor for that matter, against a European team. @cx34
@cx34 2 года назад
Just because MLR teams couldn't beat the likes of teams from the countries you just mentioned doesn't make it not exciting. Sure, the defense could use some work, but the lack of defense is currently part of what makes the league fun to watch. It's a bit like MLS: defense isn't all that there, quality is not as good as other more established leagues, but it sure is fun to watch, entertaining, and has parity. I love both soccer and rugby, and as an American, I'm rooting for both MLS and MLR to succeed. One thing I've noticed is that the reception MLS gets from non-Americans (and non-Canadians) vs MLR is night and day. So many people from outside the US constantly bash MLS, while people in the rugby sphere want MLR to do well due to America's sports economy and whatnot, so I'm grateful for that at least.

For example... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IGkpGe0_Kmc.html Great to see North America join the rugby union fraternity but a little humbleness is a prerequisite of the game. Start slowly and build. Look for international coaches and players to aid in the process. Once you start playing international teams and get a few wins under your belt against Tier 1 teams, then rugby maturity may follow. A view from afar (NZ). PS: You also have to train the camera men/women to be in the right place.
