I pre purchased the audio book - looking forward to hours of listening while I'm running. in 2019 my primary care doctor said "You're an obese, fat f*** and need to lose some weight" - he threw "How not to die" at me ... I took it home, went #WFPB cold turkey, lost 70lb, ldl cholesterol went from 190 to 70, bp dropped by 30 points. I'm getting excited .. just 5 days left til it hits my iPhone. Im reasonably sure I know most of the content but part of longevity/#WFPB books and podcasts (for me) is reinforcement .. keeps me on the straight and narrow..

I kind of feel like we are in this new health popularity contest, where the doctors can let the popularity get to them and just very clearly avoid controversy to keep getting clicks. Just listened to a Huberman/Sinclair episode from last year. It was all dancing around "unpopular" concepts like eating plants instead of steak, or just taking a pill for your high cholesterol or diabetes. I ended up kind of frustrated with it and don't think I'll listen to huberman again

@panes840 I'm paraphrasing but he said, "my cholesterol is kind of high, but I'm trying to get it down without reducing my red meat and eggs consumption" Like dude, you obviously know what is causing your high cholesterol, how about you make meat, dairy, and eggs not 50%+ of your diet? Dr. Sinclair would say "I'm mostly vegetarian, but I never tell people what to do or give advice, I can just tell you what I do..." You mean go mostly vegetarian because of the data shows the Blue Zones were all roughly 95% plant based dieters? Let's not go the extra step that would actually support more plants in your diet, which would be nice for the Animals and us Vegans. So I walked away being able to read between the lines on some stuff, but I feel Huberman the bros that listen every time will be like "yeah, hahaha, we don't need to lower our meat intake to drop our cholesterol"

My husband and I started this late yesterday evening, and made it half way through. We will finish it this evening. We are fans and followers of Dr. Greger. I was disheartened though to hear it is aimed at 50ish folks. I'm already in my 70s and my husband nearly there. What about those of use who have already aged? There are a lot of us out here. I don't want to get younger, but this book was not available when I was 50. We have been vegan for 12 years vegetarian longer than that, and still aged. I have eaten lots of plants and whole foods since childhood (growing up in SoCal where fruits and veggies are plentiful made that a dream), but I also played outside a LOT. So, did the sun just zap me as a child and there is no hope? I hope the book addresses all age ranges and doesn't just leave us out.

I discovered Dr. Greger and his NGO thanks to this video and I'm really happy I did, although I've been vegetarian (mostly vegan) my entire life. I'm halfway through the book How not to die. I immensely appreciate the decision to include the actual references and the amount of work it took to put this literally epic volume together. As a scientist myself, I really do appreciate it, and I went into some of the studies. I also understood that the book should be read in the context of his NGO focused on nutrition. However, I have two big qualms with the book. One, maybe because of its title, which is not "How to eat to not die" but just how not to die period. The importance of other essential lifestyle factors like sleep, exercise, stress is barely mentioned in the book. I know it's not his jazz but he is clearly aware that there's a lot of science about those too. The second one, and closer to his own context, so far the importance of sugar (which is vegan lol, heck coke is vegan) is not stressed at all in the book. You can load up on vegan cookies and wonder why you are not getting the benefits of a vegan diet. I know for a fact that many vegans especially in North America eat super unhealthy. I was shocked to discover that I, myself coming from the Mediterranean, had nothing in common with them food-wise when I went to gatherings, festivals etc. Vegan food can also be highly processed, high in junk fats, high in sugar, deep fried, etc. (Heck, chips is vegan, and what about the vegan cashew cheese that has coconut oil as first ingredient? It seems less healthy than regular cheese). Those people ate 90% junk thinking they're doing fine in the food department. I know that he book stresses plant based on every page and I know what it means, real, whole foods, but I can also see how someone like the people I met would still not get the message and think they're eating healthy. 😢 I also have two more minor issues with the book, why he denounces olive oil and why all dairy is lumped together in the discussion. He spends a lot of time talking about different types of meat but so far none in discerning different types of dairy, and for example even within cheeses there are huge differences. There are protected cheeses from the Mediterranean that are still produced by the traditional methods today. People from the Mediterranean are known for their yoghurt, feta, parmigiano, and many other fermented dairy eaten for thousands of years. I have the uneasy suspicion that the omission is dogmatic rather than evidence based. Finally, I know how my great-grandparents and grandparents lived and they ate meat. We had goats and sheep and we were sent to shepherd them during the day. They have nothing to do with the meat in the store today. I think an important detail missing from the discussion is how meat has changed with industry. But one can argue that about fruit and vegetables too (just look at big corn, peanut, almond, and potato). They taste nothing like those on our farm. And "organic" ones don't cut it either. So it's not yet clear to me that the problem is meat as a category versus rather the toxic industrialisation process.

Hi Chris. I’ve followed dr. Greger since how not to die came out and have all books he’s written since. As I have said before you are a hero to me so please take this suggestion with all the respect I have for you and your work. It’s a general comment but this episode included a clip right at the end that’s an example. The comment Christopher Gardner, who I respect, made and I’ve seen him say it before was, stop obsessing about protein. You don’t need more protein! From all I’ve read this is absolutely true in healthy people or even unhealthy people that don’t have a medical condition that hinders protein absorption. I’m not going to put TMI in a public post other than to say I have one of those conditions and it is super important to follow your doctor’s directions. If you have questions I’m pretty easy to find. Can’t wait to see what’s coming next from Plant Chompers! Cheers.

You say healthy people do not need more protein, than I assume the RDA, well here is your science of a current variety to refute that statement...under stress of exercise and/or diet to build or maintain muscle mass more than the RDA is indeed warranted. This meta analysis is the product of the study of roughly 700,000 people under study in total. This is made even more significant coupled with existing study substantiating the increased need in the elderly population. " Protein Intake Greater than the RDA Differentially Influences Whole-Body Lean Mass Responses to Purposeful Catabolic and Anabolic Stressors: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Joshua L Hudson Yu Wang Robert E Bergia III Wayne W Campbell Under stressful conditions such as energy restriction (ER) and physical activity, the RDA for protein of 0.8 g · kg−1 · d−1 may no longer be an appropriate recommendation. Under catabolic or anabolic conditions, higher protein intakes are proposed to attenuate the loss or increase the gain of whole-body lean mass, respectively. No known published meta-analysis compares protein intakes greater than the RDA with intakes at the RDA. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effects of protein intakes greater than the RDA, compared with at the RDA, on changes in whole-body lean mass. Three researchers independently screened 1520 articles published through August 2018 using the PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and Cochrane databases, with additional articles identified in published systematic review articles. Randomized, controlled, parallel studies ≥6 wk long with apparently healthy adults (≥19 y) were eligible for inclusion. Data from 18 studies resulting in 22 comparisons of lean mass changes were included in the final overall analysis. Among all comparisons, protein intakes greater than the RDA benefitted changes in lean mass relative to consuming the RDA [weighted mean difference (95% CI): 0.32 (0.01, 0.64) kg, n = 22"

As to qualification of the study it is peer reviewed and is pub med published, to include in science direct oxford and about 6 or more others. Meaning it is completely vetted and valid and not at all a obscure one off study. Studies that encompass 700,000 peoples rarely are. 2020 publication date however. If a source of protein recommendation are things such as the book fataholic published 8 years ago....... you simply are not up to date. This is the first meta-analysis to examine the results of protein consumption under stress in excess of the RDA. Exercise or weight loss is the key(to define stress). If you are not under such stressors, you will see no benefit. Suffice it to say however, currently exercise is recommended by every expert in the field of longevity as a assist to a long life, so all should be. If it is impossible to exercise due to disability, consult with your doc first, but a sauna or hot tub may serve as a auxiliary, which provides if engaged for 30 each day a similar effect physiologically to light aerobic activity, like a mild paced walk. Many YMCAS in city areas will accommodate the disabled to participate in such activity. But to repeat consult with you medical doc first. Particular medical conditions treatment by this suggestion of information is not intended. Read the study it is found open access. Published even in europe on a open access platform.

Book reference proteinaholic sorry ;) Published 8 years ago, a reasonable summation, is the science identified to support its conclusions are ten or more years dated. In nutritional circles such materials in the specific of protein metabolism and assimilations particularly among elderly populations, is just no longer relevant. It is far from definitive, but as this Uk Pub med published meta analysis study,states, the prospective of using keto or elements within it to treat Alzheimer's is promising. Most of the studies as of yet simply do not have enough participants, as their major deficit. "To Keto or Not to Keto? A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials Assessing the Effects of Ketogenic Therapy on Alzheimer Disease Maria G Grammatikopoulou 1, Dimitrios G Goulis 2, Konstantinos Gkiouras 1, Xenophon Theodoridis 1, Kalliopi K Gkouskou 3, Athanasios Evangeliou 4, Efthimis Dardiotis 5, Dimitrios P Bogdanos 1 6 PMID: 32597927 PMCID: PMC7666893 DOI: 10.1093/advances/nmaa073 This is by some theory related to the tendency of the keto diet to enhance the particulars of Mylin protective sheathing and/or possibly reducing the molecular glycemic effects on reduction of neurotransmissions as evidenced in relations to keto effects upon MS.. Some peoples like Jordan Peterson and his daughter find vegan diets simply impossible for them and suffer severe depression when on them. Remedied by carnivore which is by design a keto type diet. That's not to say all need to be on keto or carnivore. Obviously most all function quite nicely cognitively on a vegan diet but perhaps some do benefit by ketogenetic diets to remedy depression and some cognitive disorders. Alzheimer's being researched as one. This again is not to state one should go keto or carnivore as a preventative measure, this is all in relationship to treating already present disease processes not for prevention. Such as simple carbohydrate restriction being necessary for pre and active diabetics, but not necessary for those of normal body weight and no diabetes. We tend to confuse the two, prevention and treatment, can be entirely two different animals, for consideration. Monitoring glucose for those not pre or diabetic or with close family history, a complete waste of time, So may be being on keto for a preventative of Alzheimer's. AS of the present no published peer reviewed study for preventing A, has been done with conclusive results for keto,. Only treatment of existing conditions. In which there appears promise. Keto can be done as vegan but it requires a bit of work. Meat is not a essential part of keto though as means it is easiest.

the problem is that fat causing cognitive deficits is based on research on people who are metabolically unhealthy so research is flawed in indicating fat is responsible. Problem isn't carb. or fat, per se, but it is how each of these are produced, how you cook them, and how you eat them. I'm coining the term FAT SENSITIVE (Copyrighted by me). Like you can be "carb/insulin sensitive" you can make your body FAT SENSITIVE. There is a role for vegetables, fruits, fish/meat in our diet- we have to just find the healthy balance.

Yeah, the thing about chicken is that the breeds that are grown for meat all have the chicken version of the Prader-Willi syndrome : they cant stop eating if there is food available. Then once these chooks are dead and processed they are injected with brine AND SOY PROTEIN. The soy is to get the total protein back up as the fat content is so high (and it means it weighs more and you can make more $$). I used to work in a chicken factory for 3 years. Chris - are you going to do a deep dive into Peter Attia's book? That would be so helpful. His points about sarcopenia are valid. I had to be on bed rest for 2 weeks and was shocked at the muscle loss I experienced. BUT...all his emphasis on protein to extend life as well as the need to do intense training to boost VO2 max...while I was reading all I could think was "Hmmm, well that is not what the Okinawans are doing..." It would be really good to hear your take on his book.

He does have a lot of good things to say, so his book is challenging to review. But he is not a longevity researcher and just completely blows longevity researchers off on several topics. @HidingFromFate
@HidingFromFate 10 месяцев назад
Attia has struck me as a really curious and interestingly problematic public figure in the "health space". Like you stated, he has a lot of good things to say. But he's seems to have adopted almost a, "throw my hands up" stance regarding nutritional science. Apart from a strong view on protein requirements and some basic ideas which everyone seems to share (eat unprocessed food, not too much, etc.), he seems to look upon much of the nutritional research and evidence as still being far too unsettled to trust yet. So he concentrates the vast majority of his own personal efforts and outward communications regarding the physical activity aspects of health, with lesser nods to getting enough sleep and reducing stress. But exercise is what he views as being the most important factor. Or at least, the most evidence-based. I have an armchair pop-psych theory about why he might discount much of the nutritional evidence, but I'll keep that to myself as it can only be a speculation at this point. @@PlantChompers
@CraigHocker

@@HidingFromFate One thing to understand about Attia is that he is OCD when it comes to exercise. Assuming you mean McDougal not McGregor as there is no such plant doc....this is doctor Greger. But there is this from forks over knives site in reference to McDougall's retirement in 2018... "But after a year of personal hardships-Mary underwent shoulder surgery, he broke his leg, they lost their home in the 2017 Santa Rosa fires-McDougall decided it was time to pass the torch."" I heard but was unable to provide from other source, just could not find it today, the broken leg was in reference to a fall in the bathroom. He is old but not real old, so a broken leg from a fall in the bath, osteoporosis which typically runs concurrent with sarcopenia. They are rarely if ever found apart, excepting patients in hospitals in bed rest conditions. I per example fell from a 24 foot ladder working on a second story roof last october at roughly his age..suffered no broken anything, hit my side hit my hip my face even my ankle with a severe sprain but no broken bones. Why no sarcopenia is why. Which is very important, All people fall at times a break or not is likely sarcopenia or not.

Had I read his last book and taken it seriously say, 15 years ago, I would be in a better place. I do find it interesting how firmly he holds into animal proteins and animal-based foods as strictly superior. He's gradually making his way over to more vegetarian-friendly ideology, but I do wonder if he's so slow to do it for non-scientific reasons. Regardless, he's an intelligent person with great information worth listening to. I'm far from capable of criticizing. Also, what an incredible shirt?! 7:34

Nah Attia and Greger do not seem a good match for this debate. Greger has made up his mind and Attia is one of the most stubborn people in the business. What you would need for Attia is someone who actually knows his stuf and does the actual research and publications. Valter Longo would shred Attia into a million pieces and Sinclair will not have much sympathy for the unscientific claims either (he didn't have mercy on Huberman on that front). So maybe Attia and Christopher Garder,.. that would be a nice debate. Or maybe Attia and Liza Mosconi? Chris, I wonder if you {or Dr. Greger) have come across the 2016 book "Why Animals aren't Food -and how low carb and paleo diets sicken and kill us" by South African resident Rohan Millson. The amount of research this man has done is mind blowing. He is quite irreverent in his comments, but he is obviously passionate about health, the environment, and animal welfare. He runs an animal sanctuary.

To claim that animals aren’t food is ridiculous. Archaeological and anthropological evidence indicates that for the quarter million years that anatomically modern humans have existed, the majority of cultures have for most of this time period been eating meat and other animals products such as fish, eggs, milk and other types of dairy. On top of that, bone marrow was consumed by many humans throughout our evolutionary history and people used to eat animals from head to tail including their eyes, their kidneys, their hearts, etc. So to claim that animals aren’t food is just a lie. You can argue that some things are less healthy than plant foods: sure, that’s a point you can make. But to say they aren’t food is simply a lie.

I hope he gets to publish the full version. Everyone would buy that. 1200 or 1300 pages is what we want.

Thank you for this. I’ve been curious about the book seeing it advertised for some time. Btw, the How Not to Age cookbook is already out (11/30). Your wife’s questions about calcium sparks a question I’ve had for some time - does the warning on calcium supplementation extend to the fortification in plant milks? Some plant milk providers have 500mg of calcium in one cup. Often people will drink 2 or more in a sitting. According to the evidence, is this a danger? I’d love to also know Dr. Gregor’s recommendation on calcium amounts (if he has any specific amounts to get per day). Your wife should do more interviews (if she’s so inclined). She’s very, very good at it. I look forward to your next video, and I hope all of you stay in good health for a long time.
