Jesus Christ the sovereign God loves you :" ) I hope you can personally get to to know the Holy Trinity God did a miracle in my life, God healed me of my chronic breathing issues that plagued me if not most nights then every single night for years God did this healing instantly within group prayer over my health
My bandmate told me he wanted to incorporate a more “Nordic” sound so I tried to teach him a halling and a slängpolska, and he said “no, I mean more like this,” and put on Wardruna.
I came across this video while cleaning, i was only listening to it, and i didnt read the title, so the entire time i was just like, THIS IS AWFUL ADVICE
Highly inspiring! Now I am sure I can achieve anything I want - in your previous videos you gave us the false impression that playing the Nyckelharpa takes more time and efforts. Thanks so much for providing us with a new way of being a Nyckelharpa specialist. Greetings from Úblauðr Guðmundurson
Hej Úblauðr, I am sorry if I gave you false impressions in my previous videos. I hope this video corrects them and helps you become a trve nyckelharpa viking specialist. You seem on a good path already.
Love your outfit! This video was 100%! Laughed so hard... As the Scandinavian pagan I actually am, you can imagine how I try to keep an extremely low profile, in order to avoid the attention of people who have watched way too many episodes of "Vikings". That series have caused an immense harm to everything even remotely Scandinavian, which will probably last for decades to come... Next time I hear someone shout "Skoll Ragnar!" I will scream! Also: all those DNA tests... yuck. :-)
Excellent video. Very helpful indeed. I now suddenly feel very confident that I could play the nyckelharpa to concert standard, which is remarkable considering I have never played so much as a single note on any instrument ever. Thank you so much for your inspiration.
This comment makes me so happy, glad I could help you unlock your true natural talent so that you'll be able to make a living with your concerts from tomorrow on.
@@EmelieWaldken I've already sold 100 tickets, and I've just ordered a second hand nyckelharpa on Ebay. I think this will be life changing. Thank you so much !
Awesome video. Thanks for the tips, my wife is going to make me a viking outfit, that should take care of most of my problems..... I already don't listen much to what others say about their or my music, so.... and I am 50% Swedish!!!! You have saved my future careeer!!!!😊😊
You seem to be on the perfect path. Glad I could save your future career ! Cheers to your international success (in two weeks' time and without practice =P )
Emelie, sooooo fantastic!!! I just have to add two rules more :-) First: You need of course a four-rowed nyckelharpa because the trad three-rowed is only a "Beginner-instrument"! haha (Yes, I had some customers who told me this) Second: Trade with the typical internet behaviour and ask only for the price when you purchase your instrument. Only 500 Dollar but full sound and in perfect condition with four rows, yes! Ask never about the quality or which will fit to you! ---- my two cents ---
Yeah, a pristine custom-made 4-rows NOT-BEGINNER nyckelharpa for 500 € demanded by someone who has no idea of anything about the instrument and will end up playing on 4 keys anyways and with a stick for a bow. Also facepalm at the "beginner instrument". I'm all in for the 4-rows, having one myself and loving it, but there are so many amazing musicians who own 3-rows and do wonderful things with them... I've also met the kind who buys the most custom and special and extended model (and bow) and constantly wants upgrades... but never practices. And therefore never plays good, never makes any progress, and then wants more special expensive extended features to solve it. AHEM. XD
Hi Emelie, thank you so much for this video, I followed all the steps and I accidentally became a very famous musician! But I have a problem. Someone recently told me my music is nice but "it's all in the same key". I'm confused, because (as you recommend in step six) I use at least 3 or 4 keys in each song, sometimes even 5. Can you explain? Far vel, en sjaldan er ein báran stök!
Oh don't listen to people who criticize you (you know, step 7). They know nothing about keys. If you press 3 or 4 keys in a tune then it is not all in "the same key". Tssk. =P
@@EmelieWaldken Oh, sorry! After step 6 the offers just came pouring in so I had to pause the video and play all these concerts. Anyway good to know it's okay like this. I might add one or two more keys just to be sure. Thanks again!
@@PhilipXanderMusic Be careful not to use too many keys though, else it will look like you're trying to cover up your lack of Trve Innate Talent by playing too many different notes !
And become a pro, a truly Ás/Æsir, mastering no less than five notes, you can match your nails painting with your nyck’s keys of choosing. Then (but only then) you may even reward yourself with a copy of Bragi’s nickel nyckelharpa. Thank you for making me laugh to tears 😂😂😂
Dearest Emilie, Should I get my first Nickel-Harp-eh before I get my blood tested for Nordickness? I can already just FEEL that Sweedessh blood flowing in my veins. 😁 Now my arteries, on the other hand, may BE Australian. 😳 ?? ❤️ Thank you for this refreshing tutorial. You ARE a great help on my journey in Life. And, a most amazing Life Coach!
I knowww I've heard similar problems happen in the gurdy community aswell (more with pirates than vikings though) (which is no better). I've started playing a bit of gurdy a few years ago, very shyly, so I haven't been confronted to such problems yet, but I've heard about them ^^
@@EmelieWaldken Oh yes, the pirates. I don't even get where it comes from. Because: who wants an instrument that's super sensitive to humidity and temperature on a boat that's surrounded by water xD
This video perfectly encompasses my frustration at how the "Neo-Viking" sound has completely erased global understanding of *actual* Scandinavian traditional music, which is such a rich, profound tradition being ignored by most.
Same here ! I don't mind the Neo-Viking music, some of it I actually enjoy a lot... but it's reached so high popularity at the expend of actual Viking Age music reconstructions, which ALSO sound great ! ...Couldn't we have, like, both ?? Please ? Thanks for stopping by btw =) Love your content
I knowww these eggs still crack me up every time, it looks so cheap and silly ^^ The makeup was actually very caked (on purpose), the camera is just not good enough to show it ;)
Aside from all the other very excellent points made in this video, another thing that kind of irritates me is how instruments like the nyckelharpa, moraharpa, jouhikko, tagelharpa etc always just get called "viking" instruments in the first place. I've even seen people selling tagelharpas under the name "viking violin" or "viking fiddle" or something of the sort. Firstly, "viking" means raider, not Scandinavian person. Not everybody from Scandinavia during the viking period was a viking. Secondly, the viking era ended in 1066 which is waaaay before the time when all of these instruments are believed to have been invented. In fact, by the time they all came around, most Scandinavian people had become Christian. Seriously, if people actually genuinely cared about the heritage of these instruments then I don't think they'd be spreading all of this fantasy misinformation. If people want to play a certain style of music, that's their choice but I really am not a fan of spreading misinformation and trying to re-write history to fit a narrative.
Yep, totally agreeing with all your points there. I don't mind people playing and listening to the music they like, whatever that may be, but calling the nyckelharpa viking is just plain incorrect. I actually made a follow-up video to this one, where I talk about that problem among others : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uzR-HphoOpY.html
Wonderful! Always felt that tuning was always over rated. Just get in there and play like you’ve done it all your life. Like your new look! We’re suppose to get another 8 inches of snow. The dog mushers like it.
Hi Emelie. I enjoy your videos. You impart much useful information. In this video, at 6:08, you show a piece by Eric Sahlström. Can you please suggest a source for his music or other Swedish composer/musicians. I’m in the USA, and such music is difficult to find. BTW: I do play a nyckelharpabuilt for me by Ollie Plahn. Thanks!
Thanks Jame ! If it's Eric Sahlström especially who interests you in terms of repertoire, I guess the best would be to get in touch with the Eric Sahlström Minnesfond and/or Eric Sahlström Institute in Tobo. They very probably have sources of tunes composed by or transmitted by him. Else for general Swedish music the Svenska Låtar books are the best known source, one or several big books per region ! Lastly, here on this channel I teach various Scandinavian tunes - and I give the sheet music for each one on my Patreon : www.patreon.com/emeliewaldken
@@EmelieWaldken I wouldn't want her to take over the show, either. But I do think it will be fun to have her show up every now and then just for a chuckle.
Hahaha!! Effectivement!
Ha ha that was spot on 😂, I actually started playing moraharpa and I’m always telling people that I can’t play it the traditional way, but I use it more like a riff layers under my vocals, a bit more than three notes but close to ha ha , and I always says that I’m allowed to do that because I’m blond (and Nordic )(irony )🤣 the only thing I have as my defend is that I composed such kind of Nordic music since the early nineties before that genre was popular 😉
Hahaha your awareness about all this made my evening ^^ As I always say : "People, play what you want !" The only thing that annoys me is when people ignore the history or their own biases or choices/tastes. But as long as one is aware of these, please be my guest and play three-notes riffs ^^
@@EmelieWaldken yes exactly ,the job is to present what we know and don’t know. I’m a spoiler in this genre telling people that Viking music actually doesn’t exist , we don’t know how it sounded , cause nothing is left. I explain it here in danish around 2.54 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zydJjYoH83M.html.
@@vinterstemme Aaaaaah THANK YOU for saying this to people !! There are so many people who really want to believe that we know how Viking Age music sounded like, but apart from a few instruments in bogs and such, it's entirely educated (or HEAVILY romanticized) guesses !
@@EmelieWaldken exactly only few pieces of instruments are left and lyrics written down in medieval times ,and we try with our modern peoples brains to make a interpretation of how we think they have seen the world at that time , we might have some heritage memory lines left from our ancestors, but it’s still just a guess. Interesting subject , maybe for a workshop/talk one day Emelie ;-)
I love your videos. My problem with the piano, it was so frigging heavy, 250 kg, so I could not bring it with me, so I threw it on the dump. Yes, Yes, I understand it is hard to play and you are beatiful eventhough you are not blond, now get to it, play som beatiful tunes.
It is in the description : it's a tune called "Ögaht" that my mock-band "Yrrdøth" recorded specifically for this video. It was done in one go and edited with the feet. Lots of laughs !
Hilarious :DD. I missed the (maybe spiritual) "inner metronome" though, which is way better than a real one because a real one destroys your natural (nordic-wiking in that case-) rhythm completely!
