When we next catch ourselves going on a bit too long on a topic - or, to put it bluntly ‘ranting’ - we should dare to ask ourselves where our behaviour is coming from.

“One of the risks of social life is that we will in the course of an evening or in the kitchen at a party end up trapped with a person of excessive conviction or, to put it more colloquially, a bore. Bores can be found harbouring any manner of obsessions: they may be deeply concerned...”

+Chester Bullock I'm pretty sure it makes sense, uses double entendre and is a pun in itself . Kleptomania is the urge to take things and they do it literally, they literally take things. Puns if taken literally wouldn't work. A: "Have you heard about the explosion at the french cheese factory........de brie everywhere". B: "It's written debris"

Ealdy let's see. I think skateboarding sucks. manufacturers forgot how to make trucks and it takes so much time and effort to push to where you want to go and the wheels stop so wuickly compared to longboards. or this. man I just can't skateboard anymore. when I was a kid I tried doing a a 50/50 grind to impress the girl next door and I busted ass right in front of her, I'll never try that again haha. which one sounds better to you? maybe the key is to not talk about things in an 'x because of y' manner, but talk about opinions as experiences rather. who knows

I think I am a bore as Id like to rant about feminism to anyone that would listen, and I think my reason for it may be because I haven't really liked my life and thought it was unfair. but learnt to tough it out anyway and learnt that life isn't fair to anyone and everyone has advantages and disadvantages and that's okay, you just gotta work harder. I think that feminism means everything should be fair for everyone even if they didn't put the effort in and that put a spin on my perspective that kept me going and I felt it was like a personal attack on my philosophy I somehow got into. I am being a bore now and I am aware of it but I just wanted to get my thoughts I'd learnt from this video out.

I love ranting. When you do it with the right person, it creates a special connection between both. I feel like you can understand someone better when they talk about those small things because they probably don't think much about what they are saying so you can truly see what's inside them.

I think that what you are saying is more like a conversation or discussion than a rant. For me, at least the ranting that is talked about in the video, is more like a one way conversation where the one who is talking doesn't really listen to other opinions or denies them and their opinions are the only and ultimate truth (which is what I dislike the most about this situations not so much that they don't talk about why they are interested in the topic)
@roidroid
@roidroid 7 лет назад
+Sofia Gutierrez The video didn't make that clear, so it's caused a lot of confusion. To a lot of us the word "rant" has been reclaimed, it can now be something positive, referring to passionate talk which can be part of a *mutually enjoyable* conversation.

We all do. Our anger or rage justly directed towards some abstract issue quells its cause. It obfuscates why the depth of our passion has formed and makes us forget the plethora of other troubles we face. Of course, it can be therapeutic just to let out some steam on a topic but do rant consistently will prevent us from ever moving forward. When everything is caused by capitalism, or the patriarchy, or feminism then the only possible solution is attack everything that established or resembles the problems of that system.. But of course to think like that prevents us from realizing that whilst there may be a serious issue to contend with, some of those problems are caused by issues from within, from internal problems we have not yet dealt with.

So what does that say about me, if I rant to people when they are ignorant, blatantly wrong or stupid? That I was hurt by ignorance and stupidity? Come one, then entire human race would rant constantly, because everyone at some point in life experienced some stuff like that. What I seriously dislike about all modern psychological preachers is that they oversimplify people and human brain to the point of absurd, without having any concrete basis to do that, only loose observations of people behaviour. "I am scared of wild animals" "Oh, that means you had a terrible encounter with wild animal in your childhood, and no you have trauma and phobia." "No, I had not. I am simply scared of things that can kill me, since I am adult."
@CG0077
@CG0077 7 лет назад
Not at all, if someone is stupid or ignorant or blatantly wrong you can address those issues without ranting. Im sure everyone in the human race - assuming they know anything - would want to rant, even those you consider stupid and ignorant. It doesn't make them right because they rant and it doesn't make you right. If you know something someones else doesn't then you should be able to explain without ranting and by understanding there may be causes for their beliefs - maybe they watch too much fox news or have negative (or positive) experiences in certain social fields you have not. Ranting makes us feel good but it doesnt solve the issues it wants to deal with. And whilst It would be nice to simplify psychology to individual rationality its unfortunately not so simple, though an example like yours may well be accurate.
@gnarthdarkanen7464

And so long as you understand (before you start ranting) that only some of the rest of us can take it as a comedy, while others will likely either walk away or throw stuff at you... You're probably perfectly safe to do so and enjoy it... There are (of course) better and worse times and places for all things, including rants. A modicum of decency and sensible judgment as to your audience and surroundings will carry you a long way toward better acceptance and help you avoid trouble (including the legal kind)... :o)

I'm passionate about a subject. I better not talk about it or I would be a bore.... But seriously, looking for childhood relations with your passion seems meaningless. Why would I ever want to reduce my passion about something in order to be more pleasant? The world changes because passionate people share their ideas loudly, with no hesitation or fear. Regardless, ideas should be discussed objectively using logical arguments, and not subjectively by relating them to the interlocutor's life.

Hate is a really bad way to try to change someone's mind, I think you have to try to understand their arguments not agree with them but try to understand so you could be able to tell them or show them where their arguments are flawed and where their beliefs fail this is why therapy works because they approach things with an open mind to try to understand why and not telling people that they are just plain wrong because all that would do just have the opposite effect. You can't really change someone's mind with hate you'll only entrench them more into their extreme opinions and it will make it harder or even impossible to change their minds.
@Hans-tr6dx
@Hans-tr6dx 7 лет назад
ADP VLJ yeah i completely agree with you. I think it takes a lot of courage and character to change your mind and if you pressure another person by attacking them they cant change because if they would they would be seen as weakminded and weak in general. but if you help them understand your perspektive and dont pressure them with plain arguments they can change without beeing extremely weak. I hope you get the point i'm trying to say ^^

as a side effect when you rant, the opposite side is getting defensive and ignorant because they have to constantly defend themselves so yeah you may be right but you'll never achieve anything with such approachs

I love it when people rant at me because that leads to an actual useful conversation that I can get into. It's only boring if you don't like deeper levels of conversation and just prefer gossip over meaningful dialogue. An argument doesn't have to be hostile and I never try to make it one. It can be quite enlightening to have a decent argument on a subject. You may not realize the opponent's side of the argument for the first few minutes or hours, but after awhile, you can start to realize the value of what your opponent actually said. It really is enlightening and useful to have arguments, even if it starts from a rant.

As a young person, I've wondered why political discussions are so emotionally charged- "party X only believe this because they're dumb and ignorant". I really agree with the School of Life- people you disagree with usually aren't malicious- they're misguided and insecure. Ans so are we. I think it's about recognizing that other people are as conscious and as feeling as you are- a leap of faith? ALL arguments are motivated by emotion- some of them are more well-reasoned, some of them less. Even the utmost dedication to truth is to some degree self-gratifying or egotistical. I think we CAN make rational decisions, but only when we are have an emotional reason to do so. And I've realized that my own reservedness and detachment (in politics among other areas) is a result of my sheltered upbringing- When I find myself looking down on people that get "triggered", or get triggered about getting triggered, I still try to remind myself that people only act the way they do because their livelihoods are at stake, or their family always treated political parties like sports teams, or whatever. Yet I still believe that persuasion is more useful than an attack. My rant.

It seems to be the most well known board game too, which sucks since it's so awful. @xzonia1 People fixate on different things, because of our different experiences, and a lot of it can seem trivial to others. Hobbies, obsessions, pet peeves. I think it's wrong to see this as something hobbyists and geeks do, while professionals don't. Although I think martin was at least partially joking, if you look at monopoly from a political perspective then I don't think it's fair to say it's not a non-issue, since capitalism and criticisms of capitalism are of widespread interest.

I personally enjoy meeting people that are passionate about their interests. It's typically not hard to uncover the origin of such beliefs, and it's far more stimulating to hear a passionate person rant in comparison to someone drone on with useless small talk. If their passion is genuine, even if I don't agree with their points, it's enjoyable to see how much they do. Not to mention, if you actually are interested in their topic, you can spend lots of time bonding and constructively exchanging viewpoints. I would only consider them a "bore" if they're a stubborn ass hole that won't have an actual conversation with you.

Feels like this was a bit of a thumb suck topic, guess I'm missing something yet again. Social interactions are subjective, what one could consider boring another may not. Saying that people don't like talking to "bores" because we sense they're not being honest seems a stretch. A few of my friends can talk about systems architecture for hours...so, it must be childhood trauma? Shall I bring the couch so that they can lay down while I ask them "...and how does that make you feel?" Not everything has to be so deep and meaningful. Just go talk to someone else if you aren't interested.

@iliftthingsupandputthemdow4364
99.9% of the time school of Life is on point but this video wasn't really thought out. I think most people would say questioning your own beliefs and reflection on why we do what we do and think what we think is common sense, at least in the people I've known. What's more, the defining of being overly passionate or aggressive about a certain subject as a bore couldn't be more wrong. In fact, I'd say that ranting shows personal investment in publicly stating beliefs. And as such I'd say there is little more of a bore than is people who are "chill" about everything all the time . A person lacking any strong beliefs about at least a few things isn't very insightful, probably not very intelligent and an actual boring person who's thoughts aren't really what attracts friends or people but the general demeanor, though, like the ranter has a time and place and either is annoying if they happen allp the time.

It's sad how we think we're objectively passionate about a topic, but then we aren't even self-aware enough to realize we are bound to it for personal reasons. We just act like something is truly that fascinating to us. Once we figure it out though things become interesting.

Eek. How blindingly narrow-minded. How in the world could it be anything else then what one channel thinks? /s I don't like the ranting either, but please don't attribute it to this channels gospel. The video didn't even conclude on anything realistic, but instead encouraged the belief that someone ranting about something you disagree with must be in some way broken. While getting to the heart of the matter on why they believe something may be best route for a long discussion, people can challenge their own views without being treated like a child by providing a sound argument.

I actually love when people rant, because it shows passion and interest beyond themselves. Small talk is what I avoid and make me think people are dull and/or avoiding topics of life that actually matter. Of course the childish SJWs ranting about Capitalism and "consumerism" which they don't understand, and misogyny because they're crybabies who don't want to be held up to the standards of adulthood, are easier to filter out of my life this way too.

Usually when one of my friends gets way too personal about themselves like that out of nowhere mid-conversation, I simply say to them: "Whoa there, bro. Do you need a straw?" "What -- no. Why?" "So you can suck it the fuck up." My buddies and I all have thick skin and a dark sense of humor. So I get how weird it would be to say that to a total stranger if they suddenly wanted to unload all their personal baggage on you like that.

im the opposite of "a bore". im the one who makes jokes and entertain people. but there's always a bad side in everything. because I have this optimism and the youthful gemini spirit, many people expects from me to be telling jokes and be charmingly funny all the time even tho im sad or upset or angry. or just not in the mood for smiling at the moment. so immediately something is "so wrong" with me when im serious. but I guess that's how things work, people are always gonna question you or disapprove your attitude no matter if you're the "boring" or the "fun" type of a person.

Rodrigo Medeiros da Silva thanks for the advice, but the real problem is there are some concepts which is perfectly explained in these videos but the way they use the English language is so strong that in my mind I can't gasp very well. that's why I suggested that when you guys making videos use simple words, simple phaces, so that everyone can understand regardless of their education, class, country, or race after all, they says "we want to make the world more emotionally intelligent place". I think the best way to do it by creating videos like these in a simple manner.

Gary Platt Perhaps rather because they are Freudians and search for childhood problems as explanations for everything 😉. I'm not convinced feminism remains necessary Alain. Activism by and for women, yes. Support structures and programs for and by women, yes. The rights and freedoms the 1st and 2nd wavers fought for, sure. But feminism has a lot of seedy stuff going on under the hood, and a lot of hidden influence over our society that I think its necessary to call out in the light of day and discredit, dismantle or dismiss before I would be comfortable with calling it necessary.
@itzimac9659

I'm interested in knowing more of this point of view of yours, mostly because the things you call out that we still need, are what we feminist fight every day for. I personally think all kind of movements have extremist and shady stuff, not only feminism, but I'm open to your point of view
@Rarykos
@Rarykos 7 лет назад
Your definition of feminism must be terribly misguided then, I wonder where you picked that up. Because what you have described as necessary is feminism. If you don't like extremism in any policy then call it when you see it. But don't try to dismiss the whole idea of feminism as unnecessary. Because I might think that extremism in the fight for human rights is terrible and the whole idea of human rights is unnecessary. Am I against human rights or against extremism now? What you don't like is called extremism.

Glad to see you talk about 'sensing' dishonesty or an alternate reason for their behaviour and not 'knowing'. If there's a behaviour I hate even more than 'ranting', it's 'armchair psychology' or that of hearing people make prejudicial assumptions about what another is thinking and the exact reason for their behaviour, which even a trained psychologist with access to valid and reliable background data is unqualified to. Coming up with distorted images of feminism (superiority over men, offended at everything, etc.) might be a way of avoiding guilt, or having to take the issue seriously. I think it's somewhat similar to how much hatred people feel towards political parties they disagree with- maybe with even deeper roots, since family values are possibly even more deeply personal.

Men suffer from incarnation and rape more than women in America. Women are receiving more degrees. There is no pay gap when adjusted by occupation. American feminists are failing to promote gender equality and are belittling serious issues men face. However, women do have it worse on the global level. International feminism is still needed.

I will try not to rant. Feminism, like the political left and the political right, looks different in every part of the world. It is not the same to identify as a feminist in the USA than to identify as a feminist in Saudi Arabia or in Argentina or in Peru or in Nigeria. Nothing is just black or white. The trick, I guess, is to adjust feminism to the needs of the people (both men & women) in that specific part of the world.
