My Son Caused $1,000 In Damage To My Customers Car in 10 minutes. As a mobile mechanic sometimes, your customers will bring you the car and this is one of those times. My son also wants to own a mobile mechanic business when he gets older. So I let him come with me sometimes and also let him work with me. I had a similar problem that I couldn't hide from the owner. Doing a free repair as a favour😢 I jacked up his v8 ford of the centre crossmemeber and the jack slipped and punched a 1/2" in the zero clearance sump pan so it went clackaty clack when restarted. It was either engine out sump repair or drop the entire k frame and front suspension out to remove sump punch our the dent and put it all back together. Free repair ended up costing me over 10 or 20hrs labour to fix all for free.😢

The wife and I took a "NO KIDS" trip to Disneyland, The Portofino Hotel at Disneyland put my wife and I in a "kids" room, Bunk beds, Nintendo, Racetrack carpet, bord games, all the kids stuff. 9 Month later Here is another one! She will be 20 on October. We still drive by and say "that is where you were conceived"

Reminds me of a story from my childhood: I was "helping" my father wash our brand-new Buick (I was probably six years old). He handed me a Brillo pad and told me to scrub the whitewalls. Not knowing what whitewalls were, I took a guess. It turned out, they were NOT the white pinstripes on the doors. Oops. My father was really calm and cool, and he turned it into a positive. He took out a cloth diaper and some buffing compound and taught me to buff out scratches that day. He also explained where the whitewalls were. Then he said he should have made sure that I knew what he was talking about before having me do anything, taking the blame himself. The car, the whitewalls, and even the buffing--all not important. What was important was that my father handled it so well, and that he really was a great role model.

I know that feeling because I also had an ASSISTANT, he was 35 years old and all he was supposed to do is replace a valve cover gasket on a 2001 Corolla. He ended up breaking almost EVERY bolt off down in the head, he said AFTER breaking more than a couple, Why are these bolts so short? I was so upset I sent him home without pay or beer.

Mistakes do happen and good on you for eating the loss profit. I understand as a mobile mechanic like you. Both you and I know the owner would go ballistic if they actually knew what happened. Definitely miscommunication with your son but he's young and learning. Semper fi!

its funny you talked about overfilling. Other ford dealer i was at a tech was doing a service. he put the oil nozzle in the vehicle. went to turn the pump on. stopped to ask me if he can leave early to go pick up his son. I said if there is nothing else going on after your done with that then yes you can. Another tech walks over and was like i think your oil is full. When he put it in the car it squeezed the handle and he didn't know it. this ford fiesta held 38 quarts up to the top of the fill cap. I was like dude drain it put the correct amount in. PULL THE SPARK PLUGS AND SEE IF ITS IN THE CHAMBER. he comes back. nothing in there. i said start it. CLUNK CLUNK. i said dude did you pull all the spark plugs? he said no just that one. Alright give it one more try. CLUNK CLUNK BOOM. yeah its done. rod number one broke in 3 pieces. rod number two shoved the piston sideways in the chamber. piece of the rod was wedged between the crank and the case. this was this customers first oil change. ill never forget that day. pics of it on my fb. ill tag you.

We had a kid in the shop do an oil flush. He dumped in the flush and ran it like normal with the old oil. Forgot to drain it and refilled it, so it had 2x + a qt of flush. Another time, he drained the CVT instead of the oil. It cost him about $70 in ATF and he tried to get me to sell them a transmission flush so he wouldn't have to pay for it. The fluid looked brand new. The shops I worked in have zero training or oversight of new employees.

I hate to say it. But the mistake is actually on you. Especially when working on vehicles or anything else with youths. Where confusion may exist. Use the "TED" rule. "Tell me what you are going to do." "Explain to me how you are going to do it." "Demonstrate to me how you are going to do it." This approach never fails.

The failure wasn't your vague instruction to your son about putting the oil in the vehicle. Your failure was your original lesson about adding oil to an ICE. You should have taught your son to always check the dipstick prior to adding engine oil. It is essential the same lesson diabetics must learn, the lesson that they must always take a glucose reading prior to taking insulin. And how could we forget the adage, "measure twice, cut once." Accordingly, I would argue that teaching your son how to take a dipstick reading and analyze the result would have been far more valuable than teaching him how to add oil to a vehicle. Going forward, teach your son how to take and analyze various measurements, like tire pressure, brake fluid level, coolant level, bolt and nut sizes, etc. This would also introduce him to practical math. Save the lessons on wrenching and making changes for later. That stated, you're a great dad.

You didn't have to go to all that s*** I'm mechanic All you had to do Drain the oil, clean the spark plugs, and that's it. I did that on a nineteen Eighty nine mustang dable oil pan Too much oil in it. Smoke drain oil cleanup plugs. That was it and that was it
