How NOT to Study Vedanta - Self-Inquiry vs Acquiring Information

Vedanta texts are more like a road map than a textbook - both are filled with information, but their ultimate purpose is to guide you to a destination. Video includes recommended program of study. Q&A series #18.
Swami Tadatmananda's syllabus available here: arshabodha.org...
In the study of Vedanta, the subject matter is not Vedanta - it's your own true nature, atma, pure consciousness, the so-called inner divinity that the ancient rishis discovered to be identical with brahman.
Vedanta is not a body of information, nor is it a doctrine, science, or philosophy. Properly understood, Vedanta is a brilliant and unique teaching methodology meant to lead you to attain moksha, liberation, enlightenment, through a powerful process of self-inquiry or inner exploration called atma vichara.
The main spiritual practice in Vedanta is self-inquiry. And for that practice to be effective, your study of Vedanta must be accompanied by the practice of meditation. There are a number of important meditation techniques that can help you gain the skills that you'll need for the subtle and sometimes perplexing process of self-inquiry. Meditation is also necessary to prepare you for nididhyasana, Vedantic contemplation, that helps you assimilate whatever you have understood. And perhaps most importantly, meditation imparts an experiential dimension to your studies, and that can help you avoid the huge mistake of adopting a purely academic or theoretical approach.
Includes program of study recommended by Swami Tadatmananda covering the following: Meditation (dhyana), Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharata, Advaita Vedanta, Upanishads, Sanskrit, and Bhakti.
Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: www.arshabodha...

When I found Swami through a suggested video on youtube in 2021, I heard about Vedanta for the first time. Coming from a Christian background, and following Swami's teachings, is more than a treasure to me. I went back in time and watch all his videos and can't wait for the next one. Thank you Swami and thank the internet for making this possible.

This is truly a Revolutionary Step towards Adi Shankaracharya's teachings. I was expecting this build a study roadmap was not qualified enough to make this. Every religion is based after the texts are born, truly this will again unite the world as that was in satyug. Respect to you swamiji. I hope to meet you in india or if i can go there.

I would say that all religious texts can be studied and then either taken further in the form of action, or be restricted to a source of information. Many thoughtful Christians and Muslims do believe that there is more to religion than just reading a text. One has to genuinely attempt to imitate Christ and surrender to God.

I was one among many who’ve requested this years ago to help aspirants with difficulty following an orderly learning method without missing out on the essence of the teachings. May Iswara bless you with good health and many more years of service to all aspirants yearning to know their true nature that is Brahman. Om Shanti 🙏🏼

Dear Swami Guru, i could not sleep tonight because i read a lot of criticism on Sri Shankara being half Buddhist and half Vedanta influenced in his teachings. Of course that is true looking at his background, no question about this, but what is wrong with his interpretation? Atma, Brahma, the Self, the Universe what does it matter? He was far ahead of all teachers, because he knew, and Buddha too, that we should not argue but that we have just soooo little time in our lives on this planet that to summarise what is the most important, as not everybody is an intellectual and lives forever. My greatest respect for you Guru. I started Vedanta with Atma Bodha because I am 65 years old and his teachings and your explanation may save me before dying as an ignorant human being. With love from the Netherland

Dear Sir the criticism about Shankara beeing half Buddhist and half Vedanta stems from the fact that he was trying to negate the logic of Buddhists by using their terminology. That is why to those who only see the language used by him accuse him of beeing a Crypto Buddhist. But as you mentioned he was a staunch Advaita Vedantin who gave a strong structural foundation to the ancient school of vedanta. Buddha taught the same Truth using a different language.

Even if this is true, Buddhism is a form of Hinduism according to some scholars, so it doesn't really matter anyway. Unless you get really deep in, when you question if the self does exist on its own or if it is dependent arising.

The last 3 years I studied Vedanta by James Swartz. I am really glad I found you. I love James, but right now your teaching way is a bit more clear to me and I was totally longing for your more "traditional" way of teaching. James enlightened me a lot wih Vedanta, for which I am very thankful to him. But I missed traditional Hatha Yoga praxis and meditation the last years... Of yourse I see in the end Asanas a primarly to make the body ready to meditate (and maybe highten the energy level and cleanse the nadis) and actually meditation if important to prepare the mind for vedanta. If I am correct. Before studying vedanta now for 4 years, I was 2 1/2 years sevaka at Yoga Vidya. And did a lot of Sadhana - but missed vedanta. THe last 4 years I studied vedanta intensively, but missed traditional sadhana as meditation and hatha yoga. Maybe I can bring it together now after 6 years ;) Was never a big fan of Kundalini Yoga or intense pranayama because it probably makes my vata explode and I end up with severe sleeping problems, sadly often the same with puchas, often I am that high afterwards I can't sleep the night. But then I am tired and knocked out the next day. So I win nothing. Zero sum game as it puts James. Does this mean I better don't do all of this, or is there I way to integrate the energy better? Actually I love puchas, Mantasinging and so on a lot. I can cry a lot by singing mantras and feel bliss. But maybe it is too much for my nadis? If I do it as much as I like, even 1/2h of Mantrachanting a day can make me stay up very against my will. Right now I listen to the Bhagavad Gita Course. I am an Computer Artist. I creat spiritual animation movies. Your porduction quality is very impressive. A thousand thanks!!!

I am not sure if I can agree with everything that has been said in this video. As much as I respect the maker, I would say that saying that Vedānta is not a philosophy would be inaccurate as philosophy, much like Vedānta, deals with topics such as ethics, metaphysics, and the nature of the self. All of it isn't about merely acquiring pointless information (though there is something to be said about the intrinsic value of knowledge). Textbooks do have a purpose-to help us have a better understanding of the world around us. As I wrote to someone else here, there is more than one मार्ग.

@@MrPeaceGuy54 Do you just take it as a subject of study or are you enlightened?
@MrPeaceGuy54
@MrPeaceGuy54 Год назад
@@alukuhito Although the Jnana yoga does emphasise philosophical knowledge (along with meditation), I do not think that I am anywhere near enlightenment (and even if one doesn't approach Vedānta as a subject, there is no guarantee that enlightenment would occur immediately). In a world filled with distractions, proper intellectual knowledge can act as a bulwark against negative influences. I would say that saying that it is "just" a subject unnecessarily erodes the value of knowledge. Being able to understand the truth is not worthless. For example, those who don't pay attention to the subject of history are likely to repeat the mistakes of the past. Of course, there is undoubtedly a more active side of life (reading ethics vs acting morally). I would say that Vedānta is a beautiful subject, which is what makes its contents much more than something one reads about. I hope that you will have a good day and a blessed life! 🙏🇮🇳☮️☮️

@@MrPeaceGuy54The main point is you're listening to Vedanta being unfolded by Swami T. (I presume). You might want to find a copy of Swami Dayananda's "Value of Values". As you may know, Swami D. was Swami T.'s guru. He did a lecture on the values that Krishna told Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita. There is also a small book based on that lecture. Those are the values to cultivate in order to understand Vedanta and attain moksha, so to speak (although you're already free - you just have to know it).
@MrPeaceGuy54
@MrPeaceGuy54 Год назад
@@alukuhito Thank you for the recommendation. The fact that you suggested a book is, I think, another indication of the value of approaching Vedānta as a subject (a branch of knowledge). What matters is how broad our definition is and what our next steps are. I would agree with the idea of freedom being there from the beginning (though the atman has no beginning). One is only clearing the fog so that they can see the flowers.

Sir, sorry for pointing out. Why are you contradicting yourself? If inner divinity is Brahman, how can it be identical with Atma? If milk is in the vessel, milk can not be vessel. That is why to differentiate, the inner divinity is called Parmatma and the outer one is called Jivatma. Atma is just a common word and has to be understood with the context. It does not mean that the inner one should be same as outer one. Did Sri Krishna not say the same thing in Geeta? IShvarassarvabhUtAnAm hRuddese,arjuna tiShThati. One can not even wriggle out saying "sarvabhUta" refers to the bodies. Here the reference is chetanA-s only. If identity were the intent, it would have been IshvarassarvabhUtAni. One can not be in USA and use India map or be in India and use USA map. The starting point is also important and one can not start with a wrong assumption.
@vik24oct1991
@vik24oct1991 10 месяцев назад
The vessel is an illusion and time proves that, Satya by definition is beyond time, if something is not eternal then it’s not Satya hence if you only concentrate on Satya then atma and everything else is simply Brahman in essence.
