If you are told to go and fire watch, you may hate doing it because it is a pretty boring job sometimes when the only thing that can burn is dirt or concrete! Even though you need to look alive, grab some water for everyone on the crew that is around you if they want one or not! Believe me that simple gesture goes a hell of a long way! Grab a broom and sweep up/ pick up trash clean up the area you are fire watching in. One thing general contractors love to see is Ironworkers that clean up after themselves without being told to do so! No matter how much you may think there is absolutely nothing to do there is ALWAYS something to do!!!!!! Ask whoever you are fire watching for if they need some welding rod! Ask your Journeymen if they need a hand! ALWAYS LOOK OUT FOR YOUR JOURNEYMEN! And in return they will look out for you! Ask the connectors or the guys boltin up if they need some more bolts! There is never going to be a time when there is nothing you can be doing! I absolutely hate to see anybody standing around when I am working hard or could use a hand. Even more so I hate to see an apprentice doing it and it is unacceptable. You are in the Union and you need to represent that Union to the fullest so that we shine and so that the rats don't end up taking all of our work. Sorry about the freakin novel but this topic was a good one Brother!

Great as always boss. I too started life as a carpenter. Heres my advice if you want to get ahead in life at any thing you only need to do 3 things 1.show up earlly. 2.stay late. 3.give more than asked in the middel. Note to bosses and journenan if you want to keep good people do not allow jokes horse play or bulling at all. I ve seen to many good kids leave trades from people being asses to them. Stay safe man

If you don’t want them to suck, pay them an actual living wage. You know not pennies to your dollar. I’m currently writing my 2 weeks notice strictly for money reasons. Isn’t it sad that 2 bartending shifts equal a 2 week apprentice paycheck? No wonder the trades are loosing more and more and more people.

Good work ethics is a major key to success! I started in the rod patch then switch over to miscellaneous/structural. What a good apprentice should do is always find something to do, hook up the torch first thing in the morning. After learning that I apply that to everything I do leads for welders/110 power cords. Great video brotha, stay safe
@ChantzFabz

As a first year truck body and chassis builder I’ve picked it up super fast I ask questions when I don’t know something I ask or something I could do better. I’ll get plans a couple days before I start the new truck I’ll study the plans so I know what goes where and what I’m not sure about I’ll ask.

If you're not fire or hole watch. Don't fucking stand there, even if you have to sweep up slag or pick up electrodes or even notice the welder will need more rods soon. If all the guys are working, you can be doing something too, sharpen tungsten, sweep, get water's, do something. Don't be told to do something and try and keep everything rolling smooth

Solid especially about owning your fuckups (he who does no work makes no scrap). That helps others correct you so you only screw up (that way) once. Quality is far more important than speed because going too fast breaks stuff and people. Be chill, HAVE SITUATIONAL AWARENESS and everybody goes home at the end of the day.

Mediocre apprentices with no drive to be a fucking badass make for mediocre journeyman who ask the apprentice what’s going on. I am a 3rd year apprentice and hate a 7th year journeyman on my job that’s is asking me how to do shit. The foreman lining me out. As honored as I am. I constantly tell myself I will never be this kind of journeyman. I don’t learn anything from working with those jiws so I feel like I’m not learning as much as I could be. But when I get to work with good jiws I’m eager to learn and eager to help constantly trying to anticipate what’s happening next, asking questions if I can’t figure it out. Saying THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO SHOW ME THAT. take care of your jiws they will take care of you as an apprentice. Show them you want to learn and they will want to teach you. You can’t teach someone who don’t wanna learn.

Take it from second generation and personally 25 years as an ironworker with all due respect and I'm very serious about this question name me!!! The most famous ironworker you have ever known!!! Please include his portfolio and his earned income wage and then look back at your son and then it's 2021 look where this economy and technology is heading!! Are you honestly going to tell me you were going to advise your son when he comes of as you say 18 to become a Union ironworker Apprentice????? Whatever maybe you don't understand what I'm saying and I'm not trying to judge you seem like an awesome person very smart and articulate I don't want to go into it but sustainable life on this planet is not by building skyscrapers or high-rises or steel erection is Antiquated technology!! the most advanced governments and militaries have known this for years and years and years and years we used to have that technology but we destroyed it and it's just too painful rebuild a direct quote from NASA
