A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician explains what can void your Car's Warranty from the real world. Also explains what DOESN'T void your car's warranty.
In this video I will cover Car's warranties! There are a lot of common misconceptions about new car warranties that most people fall for. In this video we'll set the record straight.
The main takeaway from this video is that your new car's warranty is treated with common sense at the dealership. Using aftermarket parts on your car by law in the united states doesn't void the warranty on the rest of the car.
Also some forms of modifications will also not void your warranty. Understanding the thinking behind how the warranty is approached is important.
In this video I share real world experience from actual live work in a dealership dealing with customer's cars and their warranty issues.

HUNDREDS, hundred of conversations with customers over the years from 1971 to 2011 and using most of your words to clarify a customer's perception of warranty responsibilities! If only RU-vid had been around, I could have held new customer "Orientation" sessions and shown this video! Something like "Living With Your Vehicle's Warranty" subtitled, "What your Salesman Didn't Cover." As with your other PSAs, you've hit this one out of the park!

I was a warranty Administrator for a Peterbilt Truck dealership. I know exactly what you're saying. I always tried to help my customer but stayed within the manufacturer's guidelines. Sometimes our rep would help a customer for something unusual, as long as the customer was honest with them. But that was not warranty

What you're talking about only works when SOMEONE actually accepts responsibility for the problem they created. All too often, everyone involved finger points and stonewalls, and the owner is left holding the bag. VERY helpful video, though.

AMD, EXCELLENT VIDEO!! I BET TOYOTA LOVES U FOR THIS (saves them aggravation). I had an 81 toyota 4x4, in for 1st yr state inspection. Dealership is now under a new owner, but at that time, a weld was bad on my exhaust system, dealership replaced whole exhaust bc they felt it was faulty. BUT, it was past my 12,000mile warranty back then & they STILL replaced it for FREE!! I didnt 4 wheel it, so I appreciated very much! Owners NEED to know, their vehicle has a computer now that logs & mechanics can bring abuse up. I used to install batteries & ppl would install on wood boards/bungee cords & want warranted. 🤥 So I FEEL UR PAIN.😉😁

Keep records is the key here, I had a 2017 F150 2.7 which started burning oil at 20k miles(Ford later determined certain date range of mis-manufactured heads), I did all the maintenance my self, oil changes every 5k, first one after 1k. Dealer asked for any records, I provided receipts for oil & filters, manufacturer covered new engine.

AMD, great video, great advise. I totally agree. Toyota engineers made my 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport 4X4 to work a certain way for long term reliability. Only thing I changed was tire and tire size. Changed from OEM highway tires to one size up A/T tires. The slight hit on MPG’s I can’t blame Toyota. I Changed oil after 1000km’s and every 8000km’s. Since at dealership. Tacoma will be dealer maintained until it don’t make sense. When truck is not worth the extra cost due to kilometres or years.

Idea for a future video- maybe cover the complete removal/replacement of the TNGA cover panels. I was expecting the panel and clip removal to be easy, but found it was actually quite annoying since it appeared 3-4 removal tools were needed, rather than just a simple panel clip removal tool. I didn't want to damage any panel clips, and realized it was more complicated than I was expecting. I left it alone and did what I could to spray in some Fluid Film, but would have preferred full access to all the metal parts!

Just an example of some Australian dealers, I had a new Subaru that I changed the oil at 5000k regularly with original Subaru filter and 0w20 oil purchased from the Subaru dealer, the service manager failed to stamp my service record book. That’s the dealership here in Australia. The Subaru specified 10000 oil or 12 months, I only drove short distances so did not think that was a good idea. I am also a retired qualified motor mechanic. Great information as usual AMD. I just love 💕 your videos can’t miss them. From 🇦🇺👍👍👍👍

For how an alternator could cause serious damage, consider an alternator overrunning clutch that fails and causes the serpentine belt to fail. If the engine overheats because of the broken belt there could have been a lot of costs associated with that alternator.

Hi! Unfortunately some dealerships play these games and not listen to their customers. TSBs can be an issue actually. Just because there’s a TSB on something doesn’t mean it automatically applies. There’s due process for TSBs like VIN ranges and applicability

Hello AMD, great channel and content. Just wanted to share my experience with a 2003 Camry V6 which I bought new. The transmission would randomly bang when shifting from 1st to 2nd. I took it back to the dealer multiple times and was never fixed. The attitude seemed to be that’s the way it is, just put up with it. In hindsight I should have tried to get my money back under the lemon law, but I never did. Perhaps I should have written directly to Toyota. I think the only fix was likely to replace the transmission with a new one, but they obviously did not want to do this since the car still rolled down the road.

Can’t tell you how many times someone has told me they broke something themselves either in an accident or while trying to modify the vehicle and then say oh well warranty will cover it. Warranty covers manufacture defects not problems you cause yourself lol. A perfect example myself was my first winter with my WRX I only had summer tires. Hit a curb and bent the wheel, upper, and lower control arm on the left rear. Everyone kept asking me why I fixed it myself instead of taking it in for warranty! I had to tell them I created the problem not the manufacture so they won’t cover it. On the other side of things as a tech who has worked in a dealership it can honestly come down to the tech too. I worked on trucks particularly diesels. Sometimes customers would bring in a deleted diesel. At that point anything engine and exhaust related is automatically void if it were mentioned in the work order. For me if a customer came in deleted and like let’s say their alternator went out or they needed a belt and tensioner. I wasn’t going to mention that the truck was tuned and deleted because even though those modifications weren’t directly related the manufacture would blame it on the mods instead of covering it

My issue with warranty is the trailer hitch. I tow a 1200 lb trailer every 2 months or so to move a fridge or couch, Toyota do not allow that, I have to wait till the warranty is over before I install the hitch. My car is a 2015 Camry, my wife's 98 Corolla have a 1500 lb rating, but not the Yaris. The Camry is tough enough to be used as taxis. I like to see Toyota let their engineers design their cars, not their lawyers.

Hello Amd! 😃 First of all, thank you very much for the quality easy-to-understand and honest content that you and your wife create. ❤️ I'm new to this channel, but with a great Toyota car driving experience. During the one year i drove about 100000km (62000 miles). Living in Europe, but where there are no motorists, I find it quite a mileage. I'm not a taxi driver 😅😂 I've watched almost all of your videos in these few days. I am currently waiting for my new Toyota RAV4. This will be the second Toyota rav4 fifth generation car in 2022. In one of your Oils Videos, you mentioned that it would be advisable to change the oil for a new car if there is a possibility of 7000-10000 miles before the first mandatory maintenance, but in this video you have already changed to the first 1000 miles. Maybe I misunderstood something? If not, what is the reason for doing so? As for me, mileage is quite a big meet, do maintenance every other month without exaggeration! Also Sometimes there is a feeling in the dealership that the filters need to be replaced, I pay for the filters to be replaced, but the feeling that the filters have not been replaced is precisely because there is regular maintenance at them as well. is the idea to start labeling filters with a sticker to see if they are being replaced! Will it be possible to see in the dealer's center that I have opened the hatches on an on-board computer, for example, or would no one be able to tell if the hatch where the filter (cabin, engine) is standing has been opened ? very much looking forward to your reply My family currently has 2 toyota cars and am expecting a third 2019 toyota avensis with 330,000km and 2021 Toyota rav4 received in May and already 85000km All purchased new at an official dealer and overall I can say toyota is a super car I got a very long comment, but thanks again from Latvia! ❤️🇱🇻

Toyota mechanic at a dealership warned me, Toyota does oil tests, first thing they do when you go in for a warranty repair, you can't even change oil viscosity, any reason to void warranty will be used
@user-tb7rn1il3q
@user-tb7rn1il3q 2 года назад
There is usually multiple viscosities approved in the owners manual. They’d have to prove that the wrong viscosity caused the problem anyway. If you have a lawyer you will most likely win a breach of warranty lawsuit. They can deny initially, but will be forced to reverse their decision in most cases if the customer doesn’t back down. Mechanics are not Attorneys.
@mustangecoboosthpp3869
@mustangecoboosthpp3869 10 месяцев назад
The only thing useful to the manufacture doing a used oil test is the viscosity of the oil, all the other items on the test while useful over long term will be useless to the manufacture. So if you are supposed to use 0w20 oil and at most 5w-30 if the oil test can back with a viscosity for a 50 weight oil they could have grounds to deny warranty but if the comes back with a viscosity for a 20 weight or 30 weight then they have no leg to stand on to deny warranty coverage. The wear metals in the report would be meaningless because there was a failure and would explain the reason for the wear metals in the report. Further I highly doubt any dealer is sending out use oil samples because they take a few days to a couple of weeks to get back the results and they would have a lot of pissed off customers if they held up repairing vehicles over used oil samples. If you blew a rod out the side of the block they may send out a used oil sample but again the only useful information would be the viscosity and if the owners manual have multiple viscosity's listed the only way they could use that oil sample against you is if you were running a 50 weight oil in an engine that called for a 20 weight or 30 weight oil.

My favorite warranty story is a rock cracked my windshield. The insurance company sent Safeway Glass to replace the windshield. I paid the $100 comprehensive deductible. Two days later the new windshield started cracking at a corner. Safeway glass came back said they could see another surface rock chip in the crack, and wanted to replace the windshield. Bill the insurance company, and collect another $100 deductible. The car died 80,000 miles later with that crack still in the windshield. (it did get bigger).

Much appreciated, the time and effort that goes into helping us all . Especially with the tire shortage right now would buying all new tires including TPMS at name brand tire dealerships hurt your warranty at all . Seems crazy if it would . One never knows

Great video, thank you. And thank you for all your videos, they were a valuable source of information for me when I bought my Toyota. I would like to ask you a question (albeit non-related to this video but I did not find this information) - I would like to ask the dealership to change the CVT oil also on the first maintenance interval (my car is 8000 km. now, it will be probably 12 000 then). What is your advice, do it or wait for the proper Toyota recommended time for the oil change?

Maybe you could do a video on a maintenance routine for cars that go to the track? Like if you took advantage of the 1 year NASA membership that came with the Supra or GR 86.

What advice / best practice do you have for keeping maintenance records?

Keep maintenance records showing dates VIN number and mileage and a detailed record of what was done if and when possible. For DIY try to document your receipt along with picture document of mileage and vin with the receipt.

As a Toyota technician what is your take if a customer did all the routine maintenance themselves (w records and receipts). Fluid changes, brake changes, etc. Would that be enough to cover the standard warranty? I have seen good techs but I've also seen questionable ones, so I prefer to do the fluids/brakes myself.

AMD. as usual a terrific fact filled and practical video. We just purchased a 10 year 100,000k miles Toyota Factory Extra Care platinum Zero Deductible Warranty on our 2021 Highlander. My wife LOVES the car and wants to keep it forever. I just wanted to get your thoughts on this. In your opinion, was it a good decision? Are there any pros and cons ? Your thoughts and judgement are great appreciated!!!

I was offered the same warranty. I declined because Toyota’s are bulletproof for the first 100k. Just change oil and rotate tires and you’ll be good

Hi Joel! I think you did good. That’s a good warranty. It’s a Toyota so you likely won’t use it for big things but it’s the little things that can add up over time. Anything you see with the car bring it up and have it taken care of.

Ty for the kind and informative video. I recently purchased an extended warranty and have been concerned about them actually covering repairs if needed. But this video made me think about the fact that they too have to be very guarded when dealing with the public. Do you believe that if I'm showing signs of diligence by maintains records and only using the warranty when absolutely necessary that I should have any problem with being confident that my policy will in fact protect me in the case of bug repairs needing done? Ty for the blessing st the end there too! ☺️ The Gospel of John, sooner than later, friends.❤️

I've always been forward and honest. Toyota and Ford have never helped me . Nissan and Kia have helped me. I know Toyota, in general, makes good vehicles, but I am more inclined to buy a Kia or Nissan as my next vehicle.

Another great video AMD! A question. If you take a 4 runner to a dealer for a windshield replacement, will the dealer technicians do the work, or they sub that job to windshield vendors. When you call the insurance company, they usually send someone (windshield company) but can you request a dealer to do the job? Thanks.
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 2 года назад
Hi! Dealership technicians won’t install glass. The dealership typically has a glass company come out and replace windshields

Great video. I am a recently retired professional medium/heavy truck mechanic and enjoy your videos and shop videos. What is your opinion on underbody rust proofing products such as wool wax, fluid film, etc with regard to warranty issues? I have ordered my first Toyota pickup. I do all of my own maintenance (I’m very fussy about maintaining my equipment) I also live in the “rust belt” and keep my vehicles a long time. My vehicle powertrains last a long time while the frame and subframes get eaten by rust.

I use factory filters ( air, oil and cabin) they are not that much more. And I've had my oil tested. Sometimes they can tell if it's dealer OEM oil. Factory oil has Trace elements in it that the aftermarket doesn't use

Bull Sheet, cough cough, an oil test by a lab can't tell you who the manufacture of the oil is. First off there are only a handful of companies that supply the base oil. OEM oil is all low bid, that is a cold hard fact. There is nothing special about OEM branded oil.

Great video sir! Big fan of this channel. Quick question. I have a 21 Highlander and a 19 Avalon that has the plastic oil filter housing. I'm not a huge fan of this. I have a 2007 Avalon with the aluminum housing. All 3 engines use the same oil filter. It's there any harm in replacing the plastic oil filter housings with aluminum ones?

Hi AMD, great video! Just bought brand new 22 sienna hybrid AWD, owners manual break in period for 500 miles. My question is should I oil change after the break in period? My other question is should I do my own oil change or just keep going in for the two year maintenance free oil change. Your other video mentions that dealership used cheap engine oil. I want to used synthetic oil for oil changes myself.
@PM-dz9fe
@PM-dz9fe 2 года назад
You mentioned that DIY repairs would be acceptable under warranty. I'm assuming fluid and filter changes would be in this category? However, would I have to have proof that I (for example) changed my oil and filter with proper components at the correct intervals in case I started having engine problems while still under warranty. If so, how could that be done since I would not have a receipt like that from a dealer's shop showing that the service had been done properly and on time?
