Interesting question. I'd say when it comes to worldbuilding, you should stop just a little past the point of relevancy to your characters. So if you find yourself asking a question that will have no bearing whatsoever on the plot or your protagonist, you've probably ventured into worldbuilding territory that's no longer necessary to fully flesh out. Not every question about your story's world needs to be answered; just the relevant ones.

@graysontaylornyc In my writing, I've started to mentally ask myself. "How likely is the protagonist of this book to run into this?" If I find it's on the other side of Verna, the fiction world it takes place on, I simply return to the issue at hand for the protagonist. There is no point creating needless factions or history.

Agreed... although pointless worldbuilding can be fun! (Just not super helpful.)

@graysontaylornyc true. I've accidentally created factions to double back to when i needed a signature faction to tell the reader it was no common pirate vessel. Occasionally, it can save you a plot hole.

Yeah, it's good not to overwhelm your reader with too much description. As with describing almost anything, I think it's usually better to sprinkle details throughout the story, or when a particular detail is relevant.
