Grab a new filter and the old one and compare the 2 at a window when the sun's up. If you can barely see light or any at all shining through the filter, it's done. Put in the new one. The new one will have a lot of light going through for comparison.
I don't know why people would use humidifiers while running the A/C, part of the A/C's job is to take the moisture out of the air, to lower the dewpoint.

Jeez! Once a month?? Wow. Thats a lot of dust inside the house. If you have a ac filter needing replacement once a month you should try vacuuming your house or closing the windows when running the ac.
