The growth of online marketplaces like Uber, Airbnb and Amazon can sometimes threaten local businesses such as taxis, hotels and retail shops by taking away jobs or reducing income to the community. But it doesn't have to be this way, says strategy consultant Amane Dannouni. Pointing to examples like Gojek (Indonesia's Uber for motorbikes) and Jumia (Africa's version of Amazon), he explains how some online marketplaces make deliberate trade-offs to include, rather than replace, existing players in local economies -- benefiting everyone in the long run.

For me I prefer real life markets because I can see the product, touch it , and try it if necessary unlike the online onces, you see a designed pattern of the product but you buy it , you suddenly raise your eyebrows because it doesn't fit you or maybe has disadvantges you have no idea about them before . But when it comes to price Online markets charges less than real life markets

Surmised you have to have legal and action and push for policies to fight for wealth sharing with employees, and for these disruptive companies to pay their fair share of taxes.

@Chuck Right now big money interest own our government through legalized bribery. If, through grass roots support, we elect and replace the corrupt politicians with politicians who represent working class people, like Bernie Sanders, AOC and Tlaib, we can make corruption illegal again while enforcing fair tax rates to support our country.

Online marketplaces can be open source, funded by transactions within the community. Then they would merely be an extension of the local economy. When a single company has control over such a platform, first and foremost, money will be leeched out of the local economy, but the company owning the platform will have an incentive to compete with the local community offers, because it will always be driven towards more profit. So, online market places are fine, but giant monopolies are definitely not.

It is an awesome video. It explains, in an easy way, how value is created in a market society. Congratulations! The taxis react with a monopolistic manner so that nobody can compete with them, unless the state allows for it. This is the definition of monopoly. The online marketplace comes to destroy monopolies, since everyone may run the business more effectively and efficiently.

That is a gross oversimplification. The complaint from the taxidrivers is that the competition from alternative services such as Uber is unfair, because taxis are heavily regulated by the government in many countries, who set standards for their vehicles, set prices, etc.. Uber-like services which aren't classified as taxis don't have to deal with these regulations, even while taking customers from the taxidrivers and Uber will fight legal battles with all their might to prevent being classified as a taxi-service, because they'd lose their unfair advantage.

@@Melesniannon If they complain of heavily regulations that's a reason for simplify them of maybe annihilate them.
@Melesniannon
@Melesniannon 4 года назад
@@IsmaelAlvesBr Possibly true but before making a decision about that, one ought to evaluate why they exist in the first place. Where I live for example taxis are a form of public transportation, all public transportation companies are privately owned companies regulated by the government. This is done so that the general public has access to affordable methods of transportation which serves the overall economy, without such services being allowed to engage in predatory behaviour. They are not meant to be competed with because the competition will ultimately harm the public service. Keep in mind that companies like Uber aren't competing on an even field, they're not even trying. Uber's not making any profit, it's being kept afloat by investors. The goal of this is to drive out competition (no pun intented) so that after the public has no other options, they can generate profit through a monopoly. They're not trying to destroy one, they're trying to create one, the only difference being that it's theirs and unregulated. Once that's achieved, how long do you think their "competitive" prices will last?

Taxi drivers who fleeced consumers are to blame. And, why would we not try to emulate the futuristic designs of science fiction? As a Data scientist, I will support digital revamps and solutions that make our lives easier.

Watch this like it's storytelling, because it's a very badly built argument

This fella needs to be a taxi driver or small shop owner, or market stall owner. He is a lazy, no nothing, who has fooled people into paying him for very little. Digital platforms pay workers very little. Small businesses earn less money up against digital platforms. Additional value goes to shareholders and greedy bosses on digital platforms. It’s all negative for workers.
