There is a distinct difference between being housed and having a home, says Cultural Enricher Dr. Tasoulla Hadjiyanni. As a Professor of Interior Design at the University of Minnesota, she teaches why the spatial parameters of our homes are fundamental to our ability to live healthy and connected lives. Listen and learn how our kitchen tables can support or suppress our ability to create meaning and thrive.
Filmed August 7,2021 at La Doña Cervecería in Minneapolis. A refugee from Cyprus, Tasoulla Hadjiyanni, Ph.D. uses her design profession to help create communities where everyone can thrive. By researching the ways the design of the built environment intersects with culture and identity, she sheds light on how physical, mental, economic and social costs associated with displacement can carry on for generations. In her most recent book, “The Right to Home,” Hadjiyanni leans on the home-making stories of Hmong, Somali, Mexican, Ojibwe and African American families in Minnesota to explore how the design of residential interiors can support or suppress peoples’ ability to thrive. As the founder of Culturally Enriched Communities, Hadjiyanni advocates for built environments that help eliminate health, income, and educational disparities. Her award-winning teaching pedagogies as a Professor of Interior Design at the University of Minnesota have been used to decolonize design education and nurture global citizens. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This is Powerful "A Human is a place and the place is neglected". Directly translated In our Setswana language is "Motho ke bonno" one of the elders in our extended family said that to me last year at one sitting. The human race is one regardless of color or nationality. Wisdom, ancient philosophy continues to prove how interwoven we are as the people. We are more alike than we are not the same

Relationships are nurtured around meals taken together. It seems to be a symptom of either a healthy family or one that is struggling. Making an effort to have meals together, even if everyone is not eating at the same time is important. When mom or dad are not eating with the kids, why not? What is more important? Just 15 minutes joining the family - even just having a cup of tea or coffee while everyone eats - sends a message. It either says I love you and want to be with you, or I have better things to do. Thinking back on my own childhood, my parents rarely ate with my brother and me. My father almost never. Of course, it was a dysfunctional alcoholic family, but as a child I didn't know that. I only knew that there were big problems and no one seemed to be trying to fix anything. I envied other families that I thought were happier.

Wow ya.. It is best advice especially for me. Making our kitchen table useful, not only about eating, but also impactful for our simple family relation to be home sweet home.

Very unpleasant was to see all those people with those masks-muzzles. If the speaker can talk without a mask ... the audience can breathe freely, too. It's elementary.

I grew up in rural Newfoundland. Last year I moved into a furnished apartment. The kitchen table comes up to my chest, and has bar high chairs. I make traditional bread, and I found it very difficult to figure out where to make it. I ended up using the chair to put my big bowl. It has to be low enough to put my body weight into my arms and hands to knead the dough. I've grown up watching my grandmother and mother make bread at the kitchen table, not the counter.
