Good video, but are forgetting 2 things: 1. When Palpatine uses that spin move he also does sone sort of shriek/scream that was full of dark side energy that helped stun/weaken the masters. 2. None of the master actually KNEW he was a full blown sith master, much less had fought one. The surprise was total and they were completely unprepared.

When Palpatine did that spinning thing and yelled he was actually using a power called Force Scream. If I recall correctly it temporarily severs your opponents' connection to the force, which feels sorta like having your soul ripped out. That's why the Jedi all kinda stood there as if waiting to be cut down, it was kinda as if they'd been flashbanged by Palpatine.

Kit Fistos death in the novel is way better. He gets his head cut off while smiling, and his grin is still there when Anakin enters the room and sees his head on the ground.

Power in the Force matters. But so does form and saber technique. You only touched on it briefly, but Palpatine did apply a dark side confusion technique to disorient the Jedi during his initial charge. In canon, only Yoda and Mace were capable of standing against Palpatine as equals at that time. And unlike legends where the outcome remains up for debate, canon has confirmed Mace legitimately outduels and disfigures Palpatine.

They lacked plot armour

In legends kit fisto was cut down by palpatine because he used something called a force scream/Sith battle cry used to disorientate your opponent well in canon kit fisto sensed anakin s presents and he dropped his guard for a second which aloud palpatine to strike him down

My initial thought: every Sith Lord had to duel their master to get the title, but only a handful of Jedi had any experience in real lightsaber combat at all. That had to be a major factor.

The reality: They shot this late. Very little choreography and no stunt doubles for Palpatine and Windu. So they're weird lightsaber fight is described as complicated forms.

Many here in this forum realizes that palpatine, who was master of ALL the 7 forms at such a level that considered lightsaber combat a kid's play, was never really in danger, not even with Windu. He toyed with him, delaying the fight just because he knew that Anakin was coming and then he FORCED anakin to chose between him and his wife's death. Afterall remember how he teased anakin to help him when he could simply use his quickness to evade the blow and how fast he recovered the very moment Anakin stroke Windu. he played them all, to the very end!

It's also important to keep in mind that, thanks to the way this scene is edited, it probably takes about twice as long to show us Palpatine igniting his lightsaber, leaping across the room and stabbing the first Jedi and second Jedi as it would have taken in actuality. Most likely this was all done as one move. But if they showed it that way in the film, it would have been difficult for viewers to follow.

I would argue the main reason Palpatine was able to defeat them so easily was not really about the lightsaber form as much as it was the fact that Palpatine had been preparing for this moment for decades, studying and analyzing each jedi master and playing in his mind over and over how the fight would go down, while the Jedi were largely unprepared to face such a powerful opponent. To use a real world example, imagine two mma fighters have a match but one of the fighters knows who they will be fighting and when 5 years before the fight while the other fighter knows who and when they will be fighting 1 week before. Though they may be around the same skill level, one fighter will be farrrr more prepared and ready for the fight than the other (of course), giving them an insurmountable advantage.

Palpatine was in Return of the Jedi that’s why.

Why did you not mention the Sith scream Palpatine did as he was leaping through the air at the beginning of the fight. I always thought that was to stun his enemies right off the bat.

When he roars as he spins through the air its a dark side move called "force scream". It disorients the opponent & severs their connection to the force. Kolar & Tiin fell victim to it. Sidious speed was also blazing fast & they couldn't handle it.

To put it in RPG Gaming terms: Palpatine was a maxed out level 100 Sith Lord with all skills unlocked. The Jedi were cocky level 65 noobs.

We also have to remember that in the novelization of ROTS it states that Palpatine uses a mind trick to “stun” Kit Fitsto and the other Jedi making it easier to defeat them and bring the group down to only 1 Jedi where his form 7 was dominant.

Real life explanation: the choreography was just bad because Lucas didn't consider them very skillful when RotS was filmed. Their back story was developed later through comics and cartoon. Honestly this is one scene that would really have benefited from a Matrix-style combination of slow mo and real time.

Hang on… any Jedi master who had _trained with Mace_ and sparred against him would have experience against Form 7 … Admittedly a modified version of Form 7, but still. … And since the Jedi now knew there were Sith about, surely the top Masters would have all been catching up on their anti Sith homework. Specifically training to face Sith would become a priority. Hell if I was a Jedi at that time I'd try to get instruction in Form 7, to supplement the Form 3 I would focus on. And do a little Form 2 on the side to work in with Form 7. [I'm kidding, I'd carry a stun blaster or a pistol with cortosis slugs in my off hand and shoot the Sith while using a Lightsaber in my primary hand - assuming the grenade I had levitated overhead didn't get them by suprise…] Mace should have been running Sith fighting classes any time he wasn't in the battlefield. *Mace Windu [to his training class]:* Okay I'm playing the part of a _Dark Lord of the Sith…_ again … [sighs and mutters under his breath]… I swear it's lucky that I'm human or this could be considered speciest profiling.

Hmm there's some factors I believe play into this as well: 1) Anakin only told Windu he THINKS Palpatine is a Sith Lord. We know the Jedi Council were already considering removing Palpatine from office before this incident and that Windu never truly trusted Anakin. I believe the Masters went in not *really* believing Palpatine was a Sith Lord. 2) Palpatine was immensely powerful in the Force. It's pretty well established he had been clouding the Jedi's abilities to sense him for years. Plagueis was shown to be able to mask his Force presence as well. The Jedi relied on the Force to fuel their combat prowess. Imagine if suddenly you're cut off from that, if your opponent can effectively mask their presence from your precognition. You'd be overwhelmed easily without the training to fight without that ability, especially against the Sith, who were not above fighting dirty. 3) Their tactics were awful. They stood in a straight line in front of the Chancellor. If they had had any sense, they'd have split up and surrounded him. There's no way he should be able to kill two Jedi with two swings of his blade. Even if he'd jumped at one and killed them, the other 3 would have had a little space to react and prepare to duel properly. I think this proves my point earlier; they didn't really believe they were going to have to fight a Sith Lord. Or perhaps they were arrogant enough to believe he would surrender because there was four of them. Either way, there was no way they were prepared.

If Palpatine uses any Earth based firearms such as the Uzi style submachine gun, semi auto shotgun or short barrel selective fire carbine, he would slaughter those 4 Jedi(include the hard ass Mace Windu) in less than 10 seconds!

Here's the REAL reason: At the time that Revenge of the Sith was released, those 3 other Jedi were not considered to be notable characters or master swordsmen in any way, and were only included as cannon fodder to show how powerful Darth Sidious is. Otherwise they would've definitely put up more of a fight and probably overwhelmed Palpatine.

This is why if I was a Jedi at that time I'd specialise in Form *3* and Form *7,* with some Form *2* to supplement Form *7.* Bugger that, I'd also be a secret *_Grey Paladin_* on the side.

It's interesting watching the dule between yoda and Palpatine because Yoda does appear stronger in both his force ability and light sabre skill. He is even able to control sith lighting by either absorbing it or redirecting it, something other jedi couldn't do. He even appears to have Palpatine on the run through most of their dule with Palpatine relying on ranged attacks to keep Yoda at a distance.

Gotta give this one a downvote, because parts are wrong or incomplete in various ways (which can be cleared up by reading the novelization of Revenge of the Sith) 1. Perhaps the most important point - Palpatine (being incredible powerful in the force) was EXTREMELY fast; Tinn and Kolar were basically struck down before they can even make a first swing because palps was too fast for them to track. Unfortunately this is NOT conveyed very well by the movie at ALL, so it comes out looking like they just stood there and allowed palpatine to kill them. Fisto was able to hold on a little longer, but ultimately couldn't keep up either. Fun fact: In the novelization he isn't taken down with a gut shot, but rather palpatine slices his head clean off and it flies away and lands on the desk. One of many things that had to change in the movie to avoid an R rating. In short, palpatine is insanely fast and windu is the only one capable of matching his speed (and yoda later obviously) 2. Palpatine is a master of all 7 lightsaber forms, rivaled only by windu and yoda and that can't be ignored. It's not so much that he's a sith that makes him dangerous but rather that having mastered all 7 forms, he can switch to whichever form is best for countering the form being used by his opponent. 3. The force scream palpatine did as he spun toward them is a technique meant to stun the opponent and it was very effective at that on all but windu. So it's not so much that the masters have never faced a sith lord that is going against them (though that surely doesn't help) but more that palpatine is essentially the apex sith lord within 1000's of years at that time, both in power and lightsaber dueling so the battle is heavily skewed in his favor. There's a lot of confusion on this battle, mainly because the scene is very poorly shot, one of my few criticisms of the prequels (another being the Anakin/Dooku duel in Ep2 where it looks like Anakin just holds his arm out to allow Dooku to chop it off). Unless you've read the novelizations, there's a lot of things that are unknown, unclear, or just plain missed about the prequels

To me I also feel like there is a certain intimidation to seeing a man whirl toward you, shrieking out in a dark side fueled shout of brutal rage. I watched the movies in order of release for the first time with my grandparents. So to me Palpatine was manipulative, brutally efficient, and while he was weak, he ruled through strong lackies. I fully expected Anakin to come help Palpatine, or to flat out kill all three alone. So when Palpatine launched forward slaughtering Jedi, it legitimately terrified me, and between the lunge, the screech, and the slaughtering of master jedi, I genuinely was so stunned at how strong Palpatine was. I feel this psychology applies to the Jedi as well, who not only saw palpatine as weaker than them, but they saw him as only a manipulative traitor, not a warrior. So in my opinion, Palpatine's strength in the fight came not only from skill, but from his enemies underestimation and eventual terror when they realised the force of Dark Side energy they were truly up against. As you said however, the only one unphased throughout the entire fight was Master Windu, who was not only experianced in dealing with the Dark Side of the force, but also the feelings and thoughts surrounding it. Also, Mace Windu as a character rarely seems to underestimate his enemies, literally decapitating Jango Fett because he was the most immediate threat on the battle field. TLDR: Point being, psychological warfare and intimidation tactics had alot to do with this slaughter, and Palpatine's general skill, in my opinion.

I prefer how the book did this over how the movie did it. The actors did the entire fight aside from the bits where they CGI'd it. So th fight looks sluggish and sloppy because it was the actors doing it. Samuel L Jackson, who may be able to pull it off given time to train, (which he wasn't) and Ian McDiarmid, who HATES combat in movies... In the book, Palpatine kills Tin first, tricking him saying "You are a telepath, read my mind." So when TInn is distracted, Palp's sliced off his head then he stabs the Zabrak in the head. It isn't described exactly how he got Kit Fisto, because at that point we are following Anakin, not the battle, but Kit Fisto did loose his head. Also, the forms in question also led to their defeat. Had Obi Wan been there, I think the Jedi would have won. Sidious could not break through Kenobi's Soresu, and Mace would pummel him into submission. It is even mentioned in the comic that Mace brought pretty much the 3 worst jedi to bring on this mission. The thing is, in spite of being at a clear disadvantage, Kit Fisto Managed to survive for a fair amount of time, even though he was the worst suited out of all of them.

Alan, I am an avid Force lore enthusiast, SW Role Player for 20yrs, and an inventor of my own saber style & Force philiosphy. Based on the book, "The Revnege of the Sith" and other canon Force abilities, I have a more concrete theory on how Palpatine/Sidious accomplished this. As you know, Sidious used the darkside for years to cloud the vision of the Jedi and diminsh his own Force presence (Dampen Presence ability) to a degree that he was undetectable to them, even as he stood before the most powerful of the Order. Knowing this, we can deduce that, when Sidous finally revealed his true dark power, these Jedi were thrown of balance. Their movements slowed (Force Slow technique) as if they were moving through syrup. Their percetion of the Force became tainted and overwhelmed and/or interfered with their ability to channel it proprerly. We see the affects of this abilities when Qui-gonn and Obi-wan faced Maul. They didn't detect him unitl the blast doors opened and then during the fight, their actions weren't as coordinated. Once Maul separated the pair, he focused on Jinn and "tainted" the Force and threw him of balance while wearing him down. We know the result of that confrontation. Then, it happens again with Obi-wan & Maul in their duel aboard that freighter with Ventress & Oppress (SW Clone Wars AS). Maul taunts Kenobi whle tainting the Force. When Kenobi touches the darkside briefly, his on rage unbalances him once more. Extrapolating on this, this explains why Mace Windu wasn't affected in the same way, as his Force philosphy (frame of mind) of Vaapad was close to the Darkside. He could absorb, channel and redirect that energy. Secondly, as with each Force philosophy, the is a corresponding saber style. The others, Kolar, Tiin, and Fisto were not only unaccustomed to facing darkside enegy, but the style of combat, Juyo, that Sidious used. The subtle attack/defend cadences and opening moves of saber combat are unique to each style. I don't think any of them have faced an opponent versed in this style... Unless, any of them ever sparred with Windu. Take a look at Kolar opening stance/guard... Sheeve just went right under it and ran him thru. The blackslash he gave Tiin was like a Makashi manuever, going after or chasing his missed swing.

Fisto’s Death had absolutely NOTHING whatsoever to do with some “WeAkNeSs iN fOrM oNe” He tried an elaborate spin move at the wrong time. He spun right into Palpatine’s blade. It was a dumb mistake that cost him his life. That is it.... And Agen Kolar was solely just caught off guard by his speed. Palpatine knew about his skill, that’s why he stabbed him right off the bat, he didn’t even see it coming they weren’t expecting him to just cut loose like that out of nowhere.

1. The scream he unleashed during his spin stunned the Jedi temporarily. That's how he was able to catch Kolar off-guard. 2. As you noted, none of these Jedi Masters had ever dueled a full-fledged Sith Lord, much less one as well-trained as Sidious. 3. @4:26, um, that's a change in the camera angle, not a change in Palpatine's position lol.

Fun feats: 1. In the legend novels Saesee Tinn was the first Jedi killed in that fight and then Agen Kolar. 2. In the EU novels Saesee got stabbed in the trachea then Kolar got stabbed in the forehead and then Kit Fistos head got decapitated clean off.

And the reason he didn't attack Mace Windu who was the strongest first? Plot armor of course
