I wouldn't say underrated, it's pretty rightfully praised by most people that play it, and back in the day it was one of the most popular games at the time, hitting that greatest hits line of games. We definitely need a remaster thingy though, shame Square hasn't gotten around to it.

PE1 was great, I played it over finishing FF7 was a cool battle system

Sadly, the first is the only one worth playing. Having played it through again less than 5 years ago I can say it holds up better than most PS1 games. Those static backgrounds have aged surprisingly well. I remember at the time people were going on about how they didn't make full use of the new hardware, damned if they aren't way more atmospheric than full 3D games from back then.

I kinda like how each one was its own thing. PE1 was more rpg than survival. the moding of the gear was the best part. Having to wait your turn to attack while dodging was lame. Unfortunately I dislike the bullethell style so this so it might also be biased. Worst in gameplay but best in story. PE2 is like Resident Evil with magic and it works. Although resources is alot more generous compared to RE it has a good mix of rpg and combat for me. You spend exp for spells instead of stats so you're never weak for anything. Best in gameplay and mid in story. 3rdBD is with out a doubt its own thing. Everyone hates it but I find it good enough on its own. I think they didnt have the rights for the PE story license or something so things had to be changed and as a result the story sufferd (also the moment you add time travel to the plot it gets wierd). Doesn't help that most of the extra plot and backstory is in email texts that are tied to gear progress off to the side. Dropping the rpg and going all action is usually worrying when Square does it but the gameplay is still pretty interesting. Jumping from ally to ally to manage your health and position gave it some strategy to it and might be one of the few games where I find reinforcements more useful than just fodder. Although difficulty spikes exist a-plenty (lookin at you first mini boss). Mid in gameplay and worst in story.

Yea, I'm glad the changes were minimal. PE is one of my favorite games of all time.

@@BoozeAholic Except for one instance most of it can hardly count as censorship. Its good localization changes. Also the change in pics in the menu....I dont mind since the dress is just more classy.

if you have a vita or ps3 laying around they are on psn dirt cheap, i've always loved PE2, its basically resident evil with magic.

I still remember the FFVIII demo that came with PE and how that version of Blizzara sounded cooler. :P

I too, am also 30+ years old.

It died around the time SquareEnix became a thing and money became more important than quality. Parasite Eve wasn't "profitable" enough for those greedy whores. Plus they had to make a portable version just to make sure it stayed dead forever.

FFX 2001 SquareEnix 2002-2003+ Yes, SquareEnix released and published a lot of great games since they were created. Recently? Like, say, since the first FFXIII they've been all about the money. Games have gotten progressively worse since. They're now catering to the "west" and China instead of just making quality games. A handheld sequel to a console game will always be a bad decision. If they wanted to truly celebrate it they would've done more. At this point I'd like Kojima to get the rights to Parasite Eve and reboot it. At least he knows what he's doing,

If you ever get a hold of the official artbook it goes into deeper detail about the designs and Aya's character. The reason that she was topless in her jacket with the gun was to show her fearlessness and defiance as according to the artists notes. As was found in her personality - tough as nails and very independent. Considering how it's old school square and was a manga this message makes sense. Given the absurd political climate today there's no way the game could be released without having the western lynch mob around the corner of the studio. It goes with the tone and theme of the game which ended about having the courage and defiance to accept evolution.

@@TKUltra971 Regardless, I still think the dress image is far superior, the original doesn't really fit the way the character looks most of the time, so when it's an odd one-off image like this it inherently feels somewhat cheap, especially when it's done in the manga style that PE's art is done in. Also the other images are just simply better done artwork on a technical level and the original is a little weird (Body shape and proportions slightly odd, along with her boobs being weirdly squashed and suspended as if they're in a bra but still nude.) While I think it's important to point out when things are obviously changed for dumb reasons, it's also as important to not give off the message that every change a developer makes is done for the sake of censorship and not just a design choice, especially these days when as you said, things are so "touchy".

Couple years. SE renewed the license for PE last month. Probably get it after FF7R.

If I had to guess they just renewed the license to release the same games on current gen "remaster". Or they're making shudders a mobile PE game. Companies do not remake games that aren't guarenteed to print money. It costs way too much. It's easier to just cut and paste a game into a new graphics engine which is why remasters are everywhere.

@@TallulahSoie Fair. I'll believe in a remake until proven otherwise. There's even a Billboard of Aya in one of the FF7R trailers. Doubt that's coincidence.

Second game was pretty good as well. So was Third Birthday. Although, yeah, bastardized.

I enjoyed the second game more, tbh. While at it's core it strayed a bit from the "lore" it felt more enjoyable.

@KDA (G) IDLE I can at least say PE2 worked as a RE-like. Also had a far better weapon and PE system than the original game.

@@TallulahSoie PE2 was pretty good, but it lost a lot of the charm that made the first PE so great. 3rd birthday, though, was a big kick to the nuts. I liked it as a fan but the story and how it was told was a complete mess.

It was available on the ps store. I thought those were universal. Best of the trilogy.

I don't think 3rd birthday is related story wise. They share names and designs, but I am fairly certain it's unrelated lore wise.

@@culturedbrother current square is fine. Just take a look at octopath traveller. Ffxv is only meh cause of the development hell it went through.

One or two games in a big library doesnt make them "fine" at all (besides, Acquire had their hands on Octopath Traveler as well). Its just makes them "ok" at best. Parasite Eve stopped after 3rd Birthday for a reason, early SquareEnix was maybe good but current SquareEnix (or SE in the last...........8-10 years or so) went on a hit&miss spiral, especially currently since they are more interested in being publishers than actual developers (so they dont have all that much under their belt actually). And i dont even want to think about their FFVII Remake from what was shown up to now. Imo SquareSoft did a much better and consistant job creating games than SquareEnix ever did up to now. To me, Parasite Eve and even Final Fantasy (amongst others) died with SquareSoft and seeing after what they did with 3rd Birthday or FFXV (dont care about their dev hell process, that just means they dont have their priorities straight), that doesnt help their case at all. SquareSoft was THE dev team back then, even Enix could stand on their own but after their fusion, they just went downhill. They may do whatever they want, who the fuck am i to stop them. But i prefer they just leave dead franchises exactly that: dead. Not every damn franchise needs a damn remake or need to be revived or whatever.

SquareEnix occasionally publishes a good game, but they haven't made an in house good games in forever. DQXI has it's own team. Nier has Yokotaru. Octopath Traveler has acquire. SquareEnix, if given the opportunity, will milk every franchise they own dry. They already are. FF is a complete joke now. FFVII will be a disappointing piece of crap, and I fully expect KH3 to be terrible.

I'm sure it'll be out after FF7 remake.

I agree I'm played through it at least 75 times. Just using different weapon combinations made it fun to replay.

I generally say that Parasite Eve 2 was a better game mechanically (in terms of what Aya can do and how things work), while Parasite Eve was a better idea with better presentation.

@@RippahRooJizah Yea, I agree with this sentiment. PE2's weapons system was especially awesome but it just didn't have the same originality that PE had. Back when it was first released my biggest complaint was that it felt a bit like a resident evil clone.
