How Patek Philippe shaped the way we view luxury watches + I receive a Priceless Family Heirloom

This video explores how I felt after receiving a family heirloom...
I’d never really considered how I might feel if I received a family heirloom, let alone a timepiece.
And yet, ever since I started the Watch enthusiast London Instagram account and later this RU-vid channel, I have been feasting on the romantic notion that my watches will one day be handed down to my sons and perhaps even, in time to come, to their own offspring.
Patek Philippe made the concept of handing down a timepiece to future generations an aspiration.
Patek very much applied this notion of an heirloom to the watch world, and their advert with its phrase : “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely take care of it for the next generation”, has since become an iconic phrase and more than that: almost a guiding principle when it comes to buying luxury watches...
For this video, I have used my own footage alongside video that I have copied from others. Thank you to Patek Philippe (and sorry !) for my unauthorised use of your excellent video content.

Oh darn! I just realized that I left my heirloom watch back at my apartment. My head is still ringing from the boxing match I was in last night. Better go get it, my father and his friend hid it while they were POWs!

Would love to have an ALS as a family piece for the next generation(s). The thought gives me the enjoyment already

Thanks for this. I have been wearing a watch since my teen years, the cheaper quartz movement kind, and graduated to higher end mechanical pieces as finances and circumstances allowed. This has been part of my private, horological journey. I don’t own many watches but wear a mechanical timepiece daily. Imagine my delight when my 8 year old asked for a watch as her birthday present. She wears this daily and I get a certain, immense thrill when we are the only 2 at the dinner table with watches on.

Always great to hear what you have to say. I came from the Zeitwerk video and watched your Saxonia video as well. I am contemplating a Saxonia Thin for myself as well. In any case, good thinking and good work with expressing some of the nuances of passed-down items and the strange feeling it provokes. It’s hard to describe but there is a sort of felt quality you understand only when you experience something being passed down…you did a great job bringing that out.

As a father to three sons myself I constantly battle with the fact that currently they don’t share my passion for my watches or horology… yet I still hold on to the romantic notion that one day they will inherit a watch each from My collection. And I have already decided that I want it to be before I go, so at least to have the enjoyment of sharing the passing over of the piece with them. I think it’s so important that we try and leave some kind of legacy for our children and for me somewhat narcissistically i like to think that one day when they look upon the watch they have they will be reminded of some memories of me.

I'm not overly sentimental well not at all tbh so the only thing I wanted I got from my late fathers estate was his pocket watch. To put it into perspective its probably not even 10% of the value of yours. (he chuckled that his life's ambition was to go bankrupt the day before he died, and he wasn't too far off IAH) so again it's not monetary driven. I'm pretty certain he bought it in his Teddy Boy days as they were a popular addition to the 'uniform' back then. So it's early 1950's I guess. I remember it at the bottom of mums jewellery box just sitting there being on a chain long after he'd stopped wearing it , sadly the chain had gone when I got it over a decade after his death (it was in a box at my brothers somewhere he couldn't remember where) so once I had it in my possession , I bought and attached a period second hand solid silver chain. It's not a daily wear for obvious reasons but I do wear it in my waistcoat pocket on lodge nights, which for me is the perfect setting for such a time piece. Many thanks a joy as always.

Thanks again for sharing, always a pleasure to watch and listen. I don't think you need an expensive watch to have a sentimental attachment. I have my father's watch (a quartz Casio) and my late grandfathers watch (an automatic Citizen) which are relatively inexpensive. My father's watch was given to him on his wedding day. My grandfathers watch, when my father gave it to me had the crown missing and had never been serviced, but it kept time incredibly accurately. I have had it repaired and both watches have an incredibly sentimental worth to me, I would go as far to say even more than any of my more expensive luxury watches.

Another great video - each one is a delight! Some years ago, my father passed on a Seiko (baby Monaco), which has little financial value, but was a 21st birthday present he received from my grandmother (circa 50 year ago), who sadly died shortly after. So it shall never leave the collection … and I have also recently discussed passing this on to my own son.

I would suggest creating a document, I use Word Docs on my PC, to document the provenance of the item. I write a narrative to communicate the specifics of how and why I have a particular watch, or could be any item intended for your heirs. My watches for instance, are known to my son, but I think one day, when I’m gone, he’ll enjoy reading the particulars, some he may recall, but most he’ll have forgotten, and reading my original words.

I don't know whether this Patek Philippe advert actually works for me! If I hypothetically spend Patek Philippe kind of money on a watch I actually want it to be mine! 😄 I personally own an heirloom watch handed down to me by my father. It may not be a Patek but it's a Omega which is why this brand has a special place in my heart.

Interesting point of view! I suspect the answer lies somewhere in the fact that: it is yours. BUT after you’re gone…

I suppose the "generations" ad campaigns from Patek are designed to emphasise that spending (relatively stiff amounts!) on one of their timepieces is very different to splashing money on a car or a holiday. It is rather akin to having a house extension built: in exchange for the money you get something you can use and enjoy, and indeed something which _could_ be passed on to another generation; but crucially something which has and holds value. So perhaps the real implicit underlying message of these ads is that one is purchasing an asset rather than consuming money?

Thank you, this was a really interesting listen. You spoke very eloquently and I enjoyed the romantic view of heirlooms (even though I don't want children myself!). I'd love to watch a video from you about Bremont and the history of British horology. I don't know much about either but I'm very intrigued to learn more 👀

The problem with a pocket watch is it is somewhat difficult to carry with you . I don’t have a waist coat or reason to wear one . So I carry it in my trouser pocket sometimes which is a little bulky and uncomfortable plus awkward to fish out . So it either sits in my desk or when I remember on top where it ticks away happily . which is a shame as it keeps good time and sounds very pleasant on the ear . There must be thousands of them sitting in the dark unloved or forgotten which is a great shame .

I feel similar but it’s nothing to do with Patek. Some or our most prize heirlooms here are not largely legal in your country but for many of us, it is the ultimate. I’d just a soon it be a nice watch however.

More than the watches, I wish I had this gentleman's liberal arts education. I find our host enjoyable to listen to, although I use the sun to figure out the hour half the time I'm outside. After watching this video, and enjoying it completely, I am considering a tattoo of a Patek Philippe Grandmaster on my wrist so the kids can fight over it once I'm gone.

I fear you’re a romantic. Descendants don’t necessarily feel the same connection, be it to a piece of antique silver, an Old Master, or even a stately home. Looking at possessions of the deceased, one feels that they meant something to the owner in the past, but no longer to anyone else. But perhaps your sons will value the watch you give them as a cherished memory of you, the same reason Prince William has stuck to his Omega Seamaster Quartz because his mother had given it to him. But will you decree that your collection be left intact? or will you allow it to be broken up?
@watchenthusiastlondon
@watchenthusiastlondon 10 месяцев назад
Yes, I’m a romantic… and you’re probably right on all fronts. But when you give something away, you have to let go. So no decrees from me…
