@@inyexai8394 thing I always tell myself is I was a learner once. I was once nervous on the road, not knowing what to do etc. Someone beeping at them is not going to help at all

I think thats the worst thing to do, they need to get used to other normal cars, so keep the regular 2 car distance.

I love seeing learners on the road. I love driving myself and am into cars, and it's great seeing others gaining some independence. A couple seconds extra patience really helps set them up for a positive learning experience

@@Thomashorsman don’t talk stupid, they entered the junction on the wrong side of the road, no they didn’t have a clear view nor did they know how the Learner would reach. Braking the law just to get ahead of the Learner.

I discussed something similar with the wife, registered instructors having the power to suspend a license until they take a resit... but you will always get that one who would abuse the power.

Sounds good on paper, till you realise your then technically empowering private individuals with police powers. Which goes against the whole idea of a public police force.

As long as its caught on camera then I don't see the problem

@@Anoobsession The problem is the potential of corruption, and the fact your stepping onto police power territory. And if you give driving instructors that power, then every self employed person will soon be asking them as well. Before long everyone who has a job dealing with certain areas will be demanding powers for that area.

@@Historyfan476AD I don't think people are advocating that an instructor can immediately suspend any license they wish, but more along the lines of "act was caught on camera" "act is submitted for review by superiors or even police" "act has been deemed unacceptable and license is suspended".

I would agree with the student. The van driver was a bit of a bellend, but at least he realized his impatience was making it worse and backed up. it could have been worse. :)

I agree , I saw someone rushing down the road and once they got to their destination . They literally sat in the car for about 5 to 10 minutes .

I remember when I was about to do my test (a long time ago now) asking my instructor if it was worth getting ‘P’ plates and he advised me against it because they are not required by law and just give other motorists licence to tailgate you.

The L-plate does mean that you have to be aware that there is a learner behind the steering wheel, but don't put them in a situation where you don't want to be in yourself in the first place.

Doing 60 in a 60 in my car? No problem. Doing 60 in a 60 in the learner car? People overtaking in stupid places, pulling out too close, sitting right on our arse. It's as if that red L on the white square hypnotises some people to drive like knob ends.

Exactly, would get wound up trying to rush when driving and increase the chance of an accident. If fail to get anywhere it's down to not giving enough of a buffer, chalk it up to experience.

@@andrewnorris5415 YES! this is precisely why I react as I do. MOST slow things on the road wind me up. A learner NEVER does, they relax me. My instructor had an attitude and bearing very similar to Ashley's... I hear his voice in my ear, as if I was the learner. Didn't take a chance at the roundabout? 'Good observation', as opposed to my reaction to non learners which is typically 'you could get a tank through that gap' as an Addendum, i also notice if the driving school vehicle has a passenger or not. If not, it's the instructor using the car. I follow their example. It's relaxing

The instructors don't seem to where I am (occasionally they do ofc), but I'm thinking more about the learner's benefit than their's anyway.

is there is a need to say 'thanks' for someone who is required to wait and act in a manner that obeys law/HC in any case? Surely It's the very minimum one is expected to do, personally I don't need a wave, a flash of the lights or whatever. I get that people want to do it, but it's often done as part of a descalation/apology when you've done nothing wrong, there isn't a delay because the act is simply someone going about their business (in this situation learner drivers). That's not a pop at you, it's just we act out this thanking/apology wave etc just simply for being there and doing some as part of our every day lives.

@@Rumym8 I was at traffic lights at the front and this car behind me beeped while the traffic lights were still on amber. People seem to forget the concept of road rules They then proceeded to overtake me when it was illegal to overtake me, when they could have legally overtaken me 30 seconds prior, but I guess me sticking to the 50mph speed limit was too slow for them

I have heard certain people say this. According to them either you are naturally good at driving or you just not meant to be on the road . I highly disagree with this mindset . Driving is a skill that can be learned by most individuals with the right teacher .

I picked it up about as fast as anyone could really. I had about 30 1 hour lessons and then passed everything first time. Videos like this helped me so much and i still stick around as it helps me maintain good habits. I feel i am a very good safe driver. I talk to my friends and family, even my mom tells me she speeds sometimes but i never do... never.

Did you mean gave up because of the people operating the machines on the road rather than just the sheer weight/density of traffic? As a person who now only cycles as my mode of transport, I hear the same thing said regards people who used to cycle to work, now they drive because of the stress/fear of getting smashed into and the aggression from drivers. The sad thing is I've seen an improvement in a decent % of those in the metal boxes around vulnerable road users, but there is a significant portion that are not just crap and selfish but dangerous AF, and these people are either unwilling to admit their errors and/or they can't see the problem in their actions so they never change, these are the ones that are more likely to be involved in a KSI. It's just a shit show all round these days for everyone.

@@ynotnilknarf39 The traffic today is horrendous for all road users. I stopped riding a bike on the road because of the traffic and my daughter will never ride her bike on the road. We have bikes but ride them in Local woods . When I first got back a bike after many years of not riding one within five minutes a car overtook me as I was going round a parked car and nearly push me into it so I said to myself it’s not worth my life riding on the road with these idiots.

@@molamh853 Cars Safety features make the driver feel safe and then they take bigger risks without really thinking about the consequences. I always say, if we put 1980s brakes back into cars we would all drive safer.

@@molamh853 I agree with you 100% in everything you said. Approximately seven years ago while on a driving lesson we edged out of a very restricted view junction in a quiet cul-de-sac. A very elderly gentleman well in his 90s decided as he put it to me afterwards he had right away and drove straight at us and crashed into the car. For weeks afterwards I kept questioning myself, what could I have done differently and then one day a nice summers day we had the windows down. We could hear cars coming and that was the cause of the crash over soundproofing on the little Hyundai i10. I teach my pupils now when we get to a less than good vision junction to drop the window. All technology is doing with these gizmos is keeping the death rate even not making it any safer. I have just purchased a new Hyundai i10 and the lane discipline is switched on permanently or what I really meant to say is I can switch it off but it has to be done on every single journey. You can go into the menu and change it from steering to just bleeping but when you switch it off and it goes back to default steering. I have now noticed when we switch it off I still think it is actually trying to correct your steering on a Straight road. the other day I try and experiment and went past a cyclist without signalling, the car was trying its hardest to steer me back in and hit the cyclist. Could be a help on motorways but not on the roads in the UK. You’ve now got started on my pet peeve about today’s cars, gizmos

@@molamh853 My daughter has a Volkswagen up and she loves it. I was tempted to buy the Up but I love i10 and like the Up. My daughter says she will drive her car until it falls to pieces as she doesn’t want any other car,ever. I just wrote a little piece on my Facebook page for my driving school about the first two weeks with the new car . I ended it was saying my next post will be about gizmos. Maybe I’ll start it now.

👍 We all have a responsibility to show this. Learner drivers, and, perhaps even more so, newly qualified drivers, get to learn driving culture and the “unwritten” driving rules from all of us. If we show that it’s okay to deviate and be a grade A knob, then that attitude will become more widespread.

Even if it was the learner driver's fault (which it wasn't) the other driver should still cut them some slack and understand that they're a learner who sometimes makes mistakes because they're a learner!

Depending on your first car you'll still get treated similarly. I had a small Corsa and people still pushed me around until I switched to a motorcycle and suddenly I get a lot more respect

Yeah I do agree with that and I am the same, in some ways though, that sort of treatment is not exclusive to learners. I often get very impatient people behind me as I stick to the speed limits, not under, but right on (conditions allowing) with the speed limiter enabled and some drivers will sit an inch off my boot lid or pull a dangerous overtake etc. Where I am going with this? Encountering these asshats whilst learning provides some very valuable lessons for those first few months you head out alone. If you always have nice, patient people around you whilst learning....oh boy are you going to get a shock when the plates come off! Bit of a rock and a hard place.

@@DrWhosmate yeah, I’m in a sign written green van most of the time, it’s just had ‘lightfoot’ installed which means I have to accelerate slowly, or risk a telling off from management for “harsh acceleration” and I’m limited to 56, so regularly get overtaken by artics on the motorway, as they’re limited to 58. A lot of car drivers (and many van drivers) also don’t realise that a van speed limit is 10mph below on national speed limit roads, so combine with enforced slow acceleration and reduced speed limit, it leads to frustrated drivers following / overtaking dangerously.

@@Dust76tr Yeah, not a fan of technology creep coming in and sanitising everything, however, I do appreciate the safety aspects. With the new EU law coming into effect in 2022, all new cars will have mandatory limiters and data loggers on them. So much like your social media and phone etc etc, you might own it, but it's allegiance will be to the state. I know we are not part of the EU anymore, but I highly doubt that the car companies will eat the cost of making different cars for our market, also, with our current government, I see them embracing authoritarian mandates like this with open arms. We are not that far behind Scotland where having the wrong opinion in your own home can warrant a bobby at the door...Alexa finds your question problematic and has lodged a complaint with your local police station! lol. Sorry, I digress, I just don't like the route we seem to be headed! At what point does all this restriction end? When we are all identical, only ever free to follow a pre-determined, pre-approved hymn sheet? It may seem a little dramatic, but just look at how far we have come in terms of restrictive laws and systems since even just 5 years ago...maybe the grey goo world Prince Charles warned of will be from technology, just not the nano bots going mad and chewing everything up, just making everything dull and pointless. @@DrWhosmate in work vehicles, I fully understand the need for telematics. What I don’t agree with is the fact that we have to accelerate dangerously slowly to keep a little box happy. Joining a motorway is dangerous, because the box would rather you accelerate slowly and join at 30mph, so you have to ignore it, accelerate a little more briskly than it likes, while displaying red lights in your face, giving you ‘nudges’ and penalties, lowering your driving score because you’re building speed to join a motorway and if your driving score is ‘low’ because you’ve had to accelerate to get up to a safe speed, you get told off by management. At the moment, we don’t live in Russia but it seems that we’re heading that way, that you can’t do anything without someone else’s permission

I'm afraid I find that a bit snobby. I recently returned my company car, a Ford mondeo titanium estate, in order to benefit from getting the car allowance instead. And as it was at the start of this whole pandemic thing and nobody was driving anywhere it made no sense to buy an expensive car to just sit on the driveway looking pretty whilst depreciating and costing me thousands. So I bought a 1yr old Skoda fabia for £8k to tie me over. It's great. I'd forgotten just how easy and worry free having a small, efficient and manoeuvrable cheap car can be, and with the amount I've been saving over the big company car it'll have paid for itself in 2years. The cars that many people dismiss as PoS can be great fun and there's no need to "rush about". In truth the Fabia is happier at 60 than 70.

I think the key bits are the chilling out or the rushing - not whether you're doing it in a snobby car or not. I'd rather be a chilled driver in a cheap car than a pushy Tesla rushing round thinking they own the road.

@Amtsf You have been informed wrongly then, anything can be reported i have reported many tailgaters who have gotten points and fines, i have even reported those who drive like donkeys against learner driver cars too and they have also been fined and given warnings, so there is plenty that can be done dont ever think nothing can be done boss

@Amtsf neither but theres been a crackdown on antisocial and reckless driving country wide so send in your clips to the police with reg plate and the location and they will respond. I live in a ok area, but crime is bad here, they still make time for small things like this even if it takes month someone will look at it. I just wish they responded to actual reports as well involving attacks and stuff but they dont.

Umm no because there wasn't the space for them to get through and that was blatently obvious right from the beginning. The van driver could've waited behind the line of parked vehicles but didn't.

@@cjmillsnun how long do you want him to wait? If he'd let the student reverse alongside the fiat van, he wouldn't have gone through either. The manoeuvre they did was the only way the van was getting through, he's certainly being impatient but he also can't hang around for a 5 minute debriefing until Ashley swaps over and pulls away.

@@alanhindmarch7682 there's plenty of room for pedestrians, not much room for cars. Looks pretty obvious to me.... And there would still be plenty of room for both with a couple of wheels on the kerb

Vehicles shouldn't be parking on the pavement, infact it's illegal to do so in some areas in the UK (and will be everywhere in the near future)

@@crstudios4457 impossible to enforce . There just isn't enough room for all the vehicles in residential areas. That's a fact.

Yeah, it seems like they even sped up to get in there and bully the learner.

Bus & lorry drivers were the only nice drivers on the road when I was learning to drive. I try to be nice to everybody, but buses & HGVs get the VIP treatment :)
