I thought one of my girls wasn't particularly attached to me, but when I briefly left her on the sofa by herself she made a GIGANTIC leap to land on my back - and she was by no means an athletic ratty! Rats have such diverse personalities, they'll express their affection in many different ways, but it'll definitely be there! ^_^
it's pretty much like every animal, many people it seems doesn't understand that each animal of each species has different personalities and some may like something while others may hate it.
Too many people seem to think that animals are too mindless to have personalities. They think that one animal is the same thing as any other of their species (or breeds in the case of species with multiple breeds like dogs). But when you love animals and you hang out near them, you realize that each one is as unique as any human would be, with different tastes and quirks. Just because they can't talk doesn't mean they don't communicate.
@@resileaf9501 what's even sadder is when the animal pays the price for the human's not listening to what their body language is telling them so they have no choice but to lash out as a final way to say "Stop it!" or "leave me alone!" if more people actually learned about different animal's body language maybe less animals would wind up put down or back in shelters
And different personal needs too. My grey parrot can't have spinach because the vet said she needs a low protein diet, but my parents always forget that this is just a her thing and not a parrot thing so they keep being surprised when I give spinach to my budgie.
Everyone who meets my cat is shocked that she HATES fish. Hates it. Actively runs away when I offer her some. Won't touch the stuff unless she has absolutely nothing else to eat (which means she knows it's edible, she just thinks it's gross). Animals are not stereotypes; those are typically common behaviors but not universal.
A cautionary tale for rat owners: My rat recently got in a tussle with her sister, and when I got her out of the cage her left eye was boggled out- but just stuck that way- while the left side of her face was completely swollen. It's Sunday, so after the initial panic I think "Okay, okay, let's see how she looks tomorrow morning, and focus on cuddles for now." She was so clingy. So the next morning, the eye is down to normal, but the face is still swollen all around it, so it's basically swelled shut, but I think "Improvement, okay, let's keep watching it". By the next morning, I could clearly see a ring of purple bruising around her eye as the swelling kept going down, and finally realized that she had a black eye. Apparently, the muscle that twitches to boggle got inflamed, and was the cause of the eyeball freakiness. Within a couple more days, it all went away, and she's happy as can be, and I only have a minor heart attack to show for it. I've never seen a rattie black eye in 20 years of rat ownership.
Yes, it is hard when they die after such a short time...but consider that you did not bring them to this life that will eventually end....but you have an opportunity to make a wonderful, loving life for them while they are here, and the happiness they bring you will be worth it.....and they will live in your heart forever ❤
It is said pet rats first steal your heart....then break it when they die....but as I said below....they then live in your heart forever....my 2 sweet hoodies have been there for over 50 years 🧡🧡God bless those who love rattos.
I am glad that you post videos of your chaos potatoes, pocket puppies, ratty friends. It shows people how truly amazing and wonderful these beings are. Please don’t stop making videos!
I work in a pet store, and I adore the rats we get in. A girl actually came in today saying she wanted to hold a small animal, but couldn’t decide what. I immediately suggested the rats, because they are kind and never bite, even when they are nervous. I got one out and sure enough, it never even looked like it might bite. It was very nervous though, as they are young and not socialized. Super great animals🥰
They are so cuteee😭 I feel so bad for them because tons of people see rats as disgusting rodents but they are actually cute lil potatoes😭❤️❤️ Capes lil yawn was so adorable tooo xx
Rats have so much love to give, it's incredible. Some are the cuddliest little floofs, some love to play with you. And then there's this very special moment when a rat marks you with tiny droplets of pee for the first time, meaning: You're officially part of our pack! Also, Cape snuggling in perfectly and boggling with so much delight that she's almost leaving ground is too precious.
One of my late rats Marshmellow was a big cuddler, she liked to cozy up in the crook of my arm and just relax. She had adorable white curly fur too. I only ever saw her boggling once though, and it was unfortunately a few days before she got very sick and passed. Miss her and her sisters so much. (Yang, one of her sisters, was also somewhat cuddly and liked to chill on my back if i was laying on my stomach on the couch. Yin wasn't very affectionate, but I still loved her anyways.)
My baby boy Kermit was never happier than if you just let him vibe in your hood, he could stay there for hours, and if you gently scritched him he'd lick your hand like his life depended on it. He was so sweet.
That bruxing was so loud! Cape loves you so much! I love ratty kisses but I had one rat who decided that she had to clean my teeth for me and would get pretty insistent XD
Your girls are so calm omg, I can't get mine to sit still for a second, even when they're giving affection they're wriggling all over me like a jungle gym :D
Every rat is different and girl rats are the most active mine also acts like I'm a jungle gym and then I have to explain to everyone why there are scratches on my arms 😂
My nuggie ALWAYS grooms me when I go into the cage or let them out. He's definitely the most loveable of my 3. But the one that wasn't very affectionate has changed as he's gotten older. I've read they can do that, these are my first rats and Idk if I have the heart to get more after learning how short their lives are. But I am so happy, honored to have taken such good care of the three I have and will forever be enamored by them
I live in a small apartment, and don't have space for them, so watching your videos is the closest I will get to having a pet rat, thank you for your videos FRF!
This is like how cats groom by picking as well (and purr) and how dogs do that gentle front teeth nibble groom and cuddle too. Thanks for sharing. How cute.
I always find it funny how much rats boggle when people they like just are around them, on multiple occasions the people I know who have rats would go over to the rats to interact with them, and the lil guys immediately started boggling it’s honestly adorable
Ngl the whole grooming and """purring""" makes me think the chaos potatoes are more like pocket cats than pocket dogs 😂 Anyway, they're lovely and I'm glad they have you to look after them.
Had a PEW my fiance rescued from a breeder named Taro. He never really was a groomer until the last few months of his life. But every day, he used to brux and boogle until he fell asleep in my hand or on my lap while I was at work.
I got informed for getting rats for one year and at first even if I found them very cute, I worried about the fact that they life for a short time of 2-3 years. Seeing rats videos like yours finally convinced me to adopt my little babies and they are the type of animals I needed so badly in my life. I love your content and it’s making me laugh every time 😂❤️❤️❤️
This video was amazing! Seeing your rat snuggle makes my heart melt. You can show adorable furbabies doing adorable things all day long. Seriously. More!
On one of your older videos, you asked why your rat was so crazy for ping pong balls. I think I have an answer. Ping pong balls are made of cellulose acetate, which is a based on the insoluble glucose chains that make up plant cell walls, as well as some other stuff like cotton fibre. So it probably feels a bit to your rat that she's chewing on dried plants. However I do want to point out that even though cellulose acetate is classified as nontoxic, it would still be bad for your rat to swallow microplastic shards or get them in her lungs, eyes or skin where it can cause irritation. Cellulose acetate is also a considerable contributor to ocean plastic as it is extremely cheap to make, it's also incredibly weak and disposable... which is why you use them as rat toys I assume. Fun fact, it's also incredibly flammable.
I fostered a rat that liked to stand up on his lil hind legs for attention but would ONLY tolerate head scratches. Touch him anywhere else and he'd bolt. We socialized with him as much as possible and he went to a home with other rats to keep him company.
I didn't know rats could be fostered 😮 I would foster ratties, I already foster kittens. Idk if my local foster place gets rats, but your comment at least reminded me that I can ask! ❤
I envy you for your adorable ratty kids. As a child, I wanted one, but the only small pet that my mother finally gave in to, were gerbils. They too are affectionate, and surprisingly intelligent.
gah theyre so cute! i’ve wanted rats for years but i live at home with my parents and am not allowed any. i still do bits of research every now and then though so hopefully one day when ive moved out i can adopt my own pocket puppies 😊
Yesss they have so much personality! One of my rats is very "non cosy" but she specifically still enjoys and choses to take her naps next to me rather than anywhere else, and often gently sniffs me as a little hello before going onwards to new adventures. And then I have one rat who wants to hang out with us literally every second of the day. We've taken to carrying around her on our shoulders most of the time, and when we put her there she always bruxes and boggles for a little bit
I hate that there is a rat poison ad underneath this. "Oh they typed rat here's how to kill them" meanwhile this cute video made me very happy before I noticed that awful ad.
I really love your videos! My daughter and me are going to pick up her rats tomorrow and I hope, at least one of her three girls will be affectionate and want to cuddle with her. But either way, I'm sure she will love them! I only knew rats as a pet from former childhood friends (sisters) and they weren't as loved as yours are. They never did bruxing or even cuddle, but they weren't very well domesticated or cared for either.
I miss my rattie. I had a girl named Peeps that was a lot like cape in personality, but like cin in appearance. Despite being a solo rat(we didn't know at the time, this was like 17 years ago. I was a child) She was the sweetest thing. We took her everywhere. To school, rollerblading at the beach, long car rides. She was a cuddler, liked shoulder sitting and hoodie pockets. We had professional pictures taken of her at J.C Penney, since we had a friend who worked there. It is the only pic i have of her, but it will stay in my living room forever. She lived a good 5 years, which is old for a rattie. I probably wouldn't have rats again(I foster cats and own 3 cats, it wouldn't be fair to the rat) but they are wonderful companions. Peeps convinced at least one person to get pet rats. It makes me happy to see your rats. Folks need to know how great they are. ❤
I would foster rats though 😊 I didn't know I could(till reading through these comments) but fostering is a wonderful way to transition to many different pets at some point.
Totally unfair all the hate rats get. They are so sweet and lovable and I've always wanted one until I learned they need lots of pals to be happy and healthy. I don't have the space, time or finances to properly provide for and nurture multiple so I've accepted I probably won't get to for a long time. But so hoping one day!!! I love this channel!!!
People don’t realise how really really affectionate rats are, even I was surprise when I got my boys. One of them was real big (like as big as a small ferret, his dad was called Godzilla) and he was the sweetest thing in the world. If he saw me watch tv, he would just wait at the top of the cage for me to pick him up and plop him in my pyjamas to sleep. He could lay there for hours, randomly licking/nibbling my face and ask for pets. They are such intelligent and sweet animals, really one of the best small pets you can get
Having rats has been one of the most joyful experiences of my life (despite their sadly short lifespans). It's true, you feel a weird pride when you get them to boggle or brux, or sleep in your sleeve. They are unfailingly funny and clever, and ALWAYS happy to see their people.
I love your videos so much! Makes me miss having a mischief but I have 2 pups right now. Maybe someday I’ll have ratty babies again, but until then, I’ll happily watch your videos! 😙🥰
I raised rats of all kinds back in the late 90s. I used to say rats are the only love money can buy. I have lots of stories to tell but I won't do it now. Yay for fur babies!
My main experience with rodents is having mousey friends. Watching your videos I keep thinking that rats are mice turned up to 11. Corrections to this are welcome, my ignorance is no secret.
We have three baby girls and Wisp loves to groom us, Pixie loves to sleep in my partners hair and Deva loves to climb in our sleeves and then find a place in out shirt/hoodie/whatever to snuggle up and sleep. I've heard the happy rat noises when they're curled on my shoulder before, it's so sweet and makes me feel so special.
Back when I had rats I would wear this tatty old bathrobe to snuggle with them so they could feel free to chew on it without wrecking my clothes. My bestie rat George who spent at least half of her life on my shoulder, used to crawl into the robe (either from the neck or the chest) and wiggle her way into my sleeve. Then she would waddle down to where my hand was and curl up next to it while I gently scritched her ears. We did this for literal years. George was one of the greatest animal companions I have ever had and when she passed away she took a really big piece of my soul with her. She was the smartest and sweetest little girl in the world and I miss her every day even though it's been over 6 years since she died.
Honestly, them simply not running away from you is a huge sign of trust and affection. We're like 500x bigger than rats, and they are pretty close to the bottom of the food chain. It would be totally understandable if they were just inherently, instinctively terrified of humans and could never get over it. A rat allowing you to pick them up and handle them without panicking is remarkable; that they'll fall asleep on you, groom you, or play fight with you is kinda mind-boggling.
Rats are so cute and loving! 😭 I would like to get rats in the future… but I own a cat and probably wouldn’t have the money or space to get all of those lil hammocks and places to play in. Maybe someday though lol
They are actually pretty easy to make, either by hand or with a sewing machine. You can use old cotton shirts. My rats used to get empty toilet paper rolls and oatmeal cans to chew on. They are so easy to please and you get to ♻️ recycle in the process. Also had cats, rats and a dog all at the same time.
One of my most confused moment of all time was with one of our first rats, I knew next to nothing about them and I wasn't explained several things about their behavior. So one morning when I got up, I went to their cage and saw an almost perfectly shaped ball of fur with a pedestal. She was so much "potatoed" that I couldn't see any of her limbs nor could I tell which side was which. Confused me a lot, I understood what was going on, I still couldn't tell what was going on or why so I was both amused and worried. If you know someone who is about to be a new owner or rats and that you know that they know nothing about their behavior, teach them. You can skip the potato explanation just for the laugth!
Aw, I miss my pet rat buddy from my teens. Buffy just wanted to crawl over everything, me, my chair, and just chill with me. I couldn't aford a proper cage so I had to make do with a rubbermaid tub where I put buds food and a house I made for them. buds would escape everytime they heard me put on daily planet and I'd get a little started when they'd get up on my head or shoulder to watch daily planet with me. And then they'd run off when it was done to their box to go snack on a carrot or chew on a stick.
I have two brothers, just over 1 year old and one of them shows affection by climbing on top of his cage, down the back of it then going into my desk to sit on my laptop until I stop working to give him cuddles. And the other one will chirp until I give him treats. No he's not sick or anything, he just wants treats. I've tested my theory before.
My boys used to grab my fingers and lick them, before climbing into a pocket or sleeve and taking a nap. You can fit a lot of rats into the front pocket of a hoodie.
It's decided. Once I get my own apartment (parents house has no room for proper playpen and also has 3 cats and 2 dogs, so definitely NOT a rat friendly home) I am building an epic playpen and mansion cage and adopting/rescuing two rats of my own! Yes, their short lifespans will be hard to deal with, but I believe it will be worth it to spend even just one day with such precious potatoes!
