How Pilar Became A Sad Product of Night City | Edgerunners Character Analysis

In this analysis, we will be taking a look at the vulgar jokester of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners -- Pilar.
When I set out to make this, I didn't expect to have a video longer than five minutes. I was shocked when this script ended up appearing after some typing! XD We may never know the actual circumstances of Pilar's (or Becca's) life, but from what we do see of him, I think we can make some educated guesses as to how rough things were for him growing up. I did my best to do so here, without making it too crazy. You kinda have to piece things together with some of the characters in this show, but I'm not complaining. It's been quite fun. :)
While his character is a gross jester on the surface, he's actually one of the first examples of how Night City can wreck a person, and how it slowly leads you to your own demise. This video actually gave me some perspective on some of the themes Edgerunners explores as a whole, which I'm looking forward to discussing in my series overlook this Friday.

Becca is furious she didn't kill him, not necessarily because she hated him, or wanted to kill him. She saw the writing on the wall. She knew Pilar would probably end up a cyberpyscho. He was already full of himself, and arrogant. Not really caring about others or how they feel (as we see with his constant harassment of others) and wanted more and more power and cyberware. Becca knew he'd go Psycho one day, and she, as his sister, would be the one to put the rabid dog down. Not out of hate. But love. He is her brother, and she cares about him. After Pilar dies -- We See Becca now doing tricks with her shotgun to entertain the party, just like Pilar once did. It's the same vibe as "No one can bully my sibling but me". Becca may not like Pilar as a person, but she definitely loved him as a sibling. Which is why she emulates him once he passes in the form of being the silly entertainment. Edit: Becca also makes note of this when speaking to David after the party where she states "Theres no one else I watch quite as close as you. After what happened to my brother. I can't watch that happen to you too". This is a very clear indication of her caring for David's safety --- but also mourning her brother and lamenting his loss.

For Rebecca shooting his Corpse and saying “he was mine to kill” may come from the possibility that if they were to go cyberpsycho that it should be them that does it. Not a gangoon or a merc or even maxtac. And considering this is night city . It’s possibly one of the saddest yet realistic possibilities that people go through

Pilar would have probably been the most fun and carefree person. They may also have avoided talking about him to avoid hurting Rebecca, especially since she lost her (presumably) lifelong roommate too. Another great video!

Very much agreed. As tough as Rebecca is, her emotional depth surprised me. She and Pilar could have just been comady relief, and both have so much more to them, we see more of that with Rebecca than Pilar. It would have been nice to see more of him before his demise.

I'm not sure if you've heard this one, but there's a fan theory that Pilar and Rebecca knew that chances were good that one or both of them would suffer from cyberpsychosis one day, and thus had this agreement that whichever one of them went first, the other would put them out of their misery. Which is why Rebecca shoots what's left of Pilar's corpse after the battle with the cyberpsycho, as she's pissed that the psycho's denied them that one last sibling's favor, hence why she's snarling "Miserable bitch! He was MINE TO KILL!" when she's shooting the psycho's decapitated head. But yes, a video about Julio would be fantastic.

Been playing Cyberpunk the roleplaying game since my early teens. Pilar is a good example of some of the characters I have played or ran with during games, and this show represented it in all its sad depths. In nightcity, death is cheap and finding replacements is cheaper. It is a sad place where you have to fight for everything and normally find yourself with nothing. Pilar was contantly rushing to get that feeling of the high, the high of life, of being worth something, or even worthwile. He is a very sad, but amazing character the more you really look at his subtle impacts on the story, it is a great way to draw a viewer's attention away so we see other aspects of characters within his orbit in very different ways.

@@wholesome_masochist4113 Groups these days are hard to find as the RPG books went out of print for many years, only Shadowrun really continued printing. The old school Cyberpunk books came out in the 90's I believe? While my old books fell apart years ago, it is a clunky system but there are still older players playing it out there. Oddly it was less reflective of what we think of the internet these days, but given the time frame it was released, it really blew our mind.

I think in the context of the Cyberpunk tabletop rpg, Pilar's role on the team would be a "techie". He's the only one on the Edgerunners team who demonstrates a deep technical knowledge of David's Sandevistan and cyberware in general. His apartment is like a workshop. There's the one scene of him in combat chucking all the grenades, which he likely would have made himself if he was a techie. His responsibilities would mostly be maintaining weaponry, basic repairs on cyberware, making explosives, working with drones and various gadgets etc. Hardware hacking, vs netrunners who specialize in systems hacking.

You should do a psyce breakdown of Faraday or fixers in general. Of how the only means they have to survive is my becoming a person that is pressured by corpos basically into doing jobs for them or for themsleves by gaining connections to hire edgerunners just to maintain their means and well, survival pretty much. Just an interesting idea. Could even use the other fixers from the game for help as well.

Ohhh would love that. Rogue is one of my favourite characters from the game, so I would love to cover her in tandem with the theme of Fixers.

I did hear one theory that the reason Maine started to break down was because Pilar, the group's tech and likely the one doing maintenance on Maine's gear, couldn't help keep his chrome use in check after his death. Pilar likely would have spotted the issue ahead of time, but after their 'pillar' fell, then everyone else started falling next. It's also likely Maine started chroming up further after Pilar's death to prevent a random cyberpsycho from killing one of his friends ever again, further sealing his fate

Ngl, I thought Pilar's "touchy side" was just... part of the group dynamic. A raunchy, crude family where making passes isn't a big deal - and they EASILY put each other back in place. "They're just that comfortable with each other" type of deal. I could be 100% wrong.

I (look like) relate allot to Pilar just on the quiet side, more akin to David. In my eyes, he's the embodiment of "be fearless, be shameless". Don't know anything about em but what we get, but if he's gonna be bottom of the barrel, he'll walk in front of everybody on the way in.

Pilar literally was the pillar keeping them up. Right after he dies it all goes to shit. I think Maine never recovered and Pilars death was his first step into Cyberpyschosis

Nothing's wrong with pilar, nothing wrong with any of them. Dark and light are both natural parts of the universe, you see it every day in your day and night. They never speak of maine or dorio either after they die.

Seriously, never expected an anime, based around a video game, built around a tabletop MMO would make me emotional. Cyberpunk 2077 was an epic emotional rollercoaster, and so is this show. CD Projekt Red and everyone that worked on the anime did spectacularly with everything. The game itself may have had a rough start, but my goodness, have they now exceeded my expectations on everything. I can't wait for more! And the new Witcher game.

Honestly yeah. It would have been really good for say every member of the gang to get their own episode in between some of the main plot. Even the ones who get added later like Falco. It'd be nice to flesh them out in a sorta tales of ba sing se esque short story just so it hurts a lil bit worse when they flatline .

@@lydiscott It seems to me the primary theme of the story is, maybe unsurprisingly, legacy. Johnny is constantly reminded oh how his legacy is all but forgotten, V brings up her fear of dying and having not left her mark on multiple occasions. Richard Night’s legacy was a hellscape of unfettered libertarian capitalism. And Saburo Arasaka’s legacy is undone by by the one who is supposed to carry on his legacy. His son. There are also major themes around change, identity and death. But i think Legacy is the main drive.

As I always, do, you know me to bring in characters from the game that offer a reflection or parallel to the characters of your discussion. Oozob reminds me of Pilar. Powerful, crazy and a bit of comic relief. Oozob shows at least a sense of honor among edgerunners. While i don't show much remorse in setting off his grenade nose, i did fine him likable in the sense that it only takes a little bit of respect to separate yourself Pilar. On the other hand id like to bring up Johnny Silverhand once again as a complete asshole😂. He was deified by his fans since he went out in a blaze of glory but those closest to him had a bitter ambivalence to him. He abused and gaslit all around him mainly because he hated himself for being a corpo stooge and used them either for sex, drugs and self loathing. Though everyone has a unique relationship with Johnny, it's mostly negative and yet people mourned him, just like how Alt saw he was more than just a punk rocker. he inspired and believed in a movement that people embraced. To me, Johnny can be as detestable as Pilar but because he's self righteous and believes in a cause, he's given a longer amount of slack that he has already been used up with Rogue and Alt where Pilar is similar but one that is in it for himself.

I'm not even sure if Smasher would be happy, because i'm not sure what he would be happy about. He seems to like when things get interesting but I doubt thats all the time, he's so jacked that fights aren't really a problem, and his cybernetics are about as far as they can go so he can't really improve any further. His job almost feels like it's an obligation more than it's anything he actually wants to do and Smasher doesn't seem to be the kind of guy to party it up. He collects weapons but he also doesn't really come off as a gun nut since when you fight him he doesn't use anything but what was built into his body. So yeah, I can't think of what he would be happy about unless he just really likes killing, then maybe thats it.
