2014's The Endless River is the final Pink Floyd album and a tribute to Richard Wright. Originating from jam sessions while making The Division Bell, the album features continuous instrumental music, including Things Left Unsaid, Skins, Allons-Y, Talkin' Hawkin' and Surfacing. There is also a vocal song called Louder Than Words written by David Gilmour with lyrics by Polly Samson. Is it worthy of being Pink Floyd's final release?

Pink Floyd is without a doubt one of the greatest classic rock bands of all time. They began in the 60s with Roger Waters on bass, Nick Mason on drums, Richard Wright on organ and Syd Barrett on lead guitar and vocals. Syd penned their early singles like See Emily Play and most of their 1967 album Piper at the Gates of Dawn (Astronomy Domine, Interstellar Overdrive). Their live shows featured unique light shows. However due to Syd's breakdown he was replaced with David Gilmour on guitar in 1968. This would become Pink Floyd's classic lineup through A Saucerful of Secrets, More, Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother. 1971's Meddle would turn out to be an important staple for the band with the rocking opener One of these Days I'm Going to Cut You Into Little Pieces, featuring a rare spoken vocal by Nick, Roger's echoing bass line and Dave's Slide Guitar. The flip side, another 23 minute piece, Echoes, featuring Dave and Rick on vocals, is often regarded as Progressive Rock's finest moment, from the opening ping of Rick's leslie piano. They would also perform both these songs along with earlier classics Live at Pompeii. The Obscured by Clouds soundtrack appeared in 1972 with tracks like Burning Bridges and Childhood's End. However 1973's Dark Side of the Moon would become one of the most successful albums of all time, staying on the charts for nearly 13 years and still a best seller today. Roger's lyrics dealt with the evils of society driving one to madness, while the music was nearly one entire inter-connected piece (making it difficult to separate for a playlist or a best of / greatest hits compilation). Still standouts like Money, Time and Great Gig in the Sky are favorites among fans. Their 1975 followup Wish You Were Here, featuring the opening and closing piece Shine On You Crazy Diamond (a tribute to Syd Barrett who even showed up at the sessions), is thought to be equally great, if not greater, as Dark Side. But tensions between the band were beginning to rear their head. 1977 saw the release of Animals, notable for its famous cover. Roger became the band's main frontman and sole songwriter with Dave occasionally sharing the mic and writing credits. Tensions grew during the tour when Roger ended up spitting on a fan in Montreal and coming up with the idea for The Wall to separate himself from the audience. 1979 would see the release of The Wall, the album and later the tour and film. Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 became their best selling single and Comfortably Numb remains one of their most popular tunes. But it nearly broke up the band as Roger fired Rick for lack of output, creating a greater rift between him and Dave. Recycling unused tracks from The Wall sessions, 1983's The Final Cut was Roger's final album with Pink Floyd. In 1985, Roger officially left the band. Dave and Nick decided to carry on reuniting with Rick for 1987's Momentary Lapse of Reason, produced by Bob Ezrin and featuring songs like Learning to Fly, On the Turning Away, and Sorrow. Roger sued to break up the band, but failed to do so instead focusing on his solo career. A Delicate Sound of Thunder, a live recording from their tour, was released in 1988. The Gilmour led Floyd would produce 1994's The Division Bell, a return to form for many fans thanks to the project originating from jams in Britannia Row. With Rick now sharing vocal and songwriting duties again, along with lyricist Polly Samson, the album included the songs Marooned, Keep Talking and High Hopes became a fan favorite. 1993 Jam sessions from the album sessions would be organized into a collection of ambient music later to be released as The Endless River, though divided some fans, some citing it as their worst album. It wasn't until 2005's Live 8 concert when Dave, Nick and Rick reunited with Roger for a short set giving closure for many fans. Syd never performed with Pink Floyd again and died in 2006. Rick died in 2008. The Endless River was dedicated in his honor. Nick Mason would join forces with Guy Pratt to form the touring band Saucerful of Secrets while Dave and Roger have continued doing solo albums and tours.

In the Deluxe Edition, the final song is an instrumental track called “Nervana,” and it is genuinely the best song on the entire album. It is literally David, Nick, and Richard rocking out one last time.

I bought this album on vinyl when it came out and never listened to it. Maybe I was afraid it'd tarnish Floyd's overall discography for me. Hearing Louder Than Words certainly didn't help. That said, this video inspired me to throw on Talkin Hawkin and I really loved it. I may not listen to the whole thing right away, but good to know there's some decent stuff on here. Also thanks JT for this excellent Pink Floyd series. I was almost as big a floyd fanatic as you and reread Nick's book probably a dozen times. Always nice to see that passion shared with others. What a fucking amazing band.

Agree but unfortunately, you cannot contain some egos and Roger has no involvement with PF since the 80s and as a certified control freak, no way he would humble himself to simply be a session guy on a song. But, yeah, it would have been awesome. @@springall5150

It wasn’t meant to be an outright Floyd album. It was for the fans and I appreciate it for what it is. While it doesn’t try to outdo Division Bell which ending on “High Hopes” really encompasses PF’s career I think. It was a good bit of outtakes packaged to kind of wet our whistles. I can’t listen to it without going back to the time in my life it came out. Signs of a good album.

You know what would be epic? Dave, Nick & Roger should find a recording of Syd & another of Rick & try to mesh both & make a song out of them, then the 3 should record themselves playing the tune & possibly sing on it!!!

For me, Rick Wright was the best part of Pink Floyd's sound. It's a shame that he's no longer with us, but at least we have all of his contributions to look back on to remember him by, including this album. I like _The Endless River_ decently enough. Whenever I feel stressed or sleep-deprived, it's a great album to put on to calm down and relax to. However, its quality doesn't stack up to the majority of Floyd's catalog. At the same time, I don't feel like it needed to. It's still a pleasant record to play every now and then. RIP Syd Barrett, Rick Wright, and Pink Floyd as a band. One of my favorite bands of all time!

Even though I think this material would’ve been better on a DB box set, like originally intended… it’s still a great ambient album. Just not what everyone expected. I’m a huge fan of Anisina and Autumn ‘68. Endless River’s reputation is an example of too high expectations.

I misjudged this album. Most of the general public were expecting an album with full vocals on each track, to make it more of a 'Division Bell 2' than it actually was. But I like that it is actually - all but one track - an instrumental album. It is a homage to the original idea for 'The Big Spliff', but it also serves as a nice finale with things winding down a bit. But with no vocals, Rick has a spotlight on him like never before, which serves as a fitting tribute to him. If I had known at the time that the album was going to be mostly instrumental, I wouldn't have held off revisiting this album for all those years. And with the footnote to their career, 2022's Hey Hey Rise Up, anyone else prefer that to the new Beatles track? Great video and series JT, thanks for enchanting our collective appreciation for the band. Merry Chrimbles.

David Gilmour was right; you have to be an avid Pink Floyd fan to understand this album. I've been an avid fan since Ummagumma and seeing them live at 73's Dark Side of the Moon Tour. And I've liked this album from the 1st time I heard it, including Louder Than Words. After adding it to my Pink Floyd collection on my IPOD,, I would listen to it at work to get me into a nice place. Retired now, I put on the IPOD for my daily walks and enjoy all the Pink Floyd albums as well as a variety of other bands I like. I just went through A Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Division Bell and The Endless River during my walks at the end of last week. It was great. Maybe if you do (or don't) smoke a little and listen to it again, you'll get this album too.

I really enjoy The Endless River overall. One of the things I like most about Pink Floyd is that they were able to adapt to almost any decade and genre pretty effortlessly. From the psychedelic 60's to the progressive 70's, they were always there and never seemed out of place. With The Division Bell and The Endless River, they were experimenting with ambient music. And they did a great job of blending into that ambient scene, all while combining their traditional progressive elements and even some symphonic elements. Anisina is definitely my favorite track on The Endless River. I love the sax solo on that track. If you're curious, there's actually a demo for it from the 1993 Division Bell sessions that I think might be even better. That chord sequence sounds so distinctly Rick Wright, almost like a follow up to Us and Them. The 1993 demos are pretty interesting to listen to. A lot of them sound so basic and stripped down, but (and this might be the bad sound quality causing this) there's a hazy nostalgic atmosphere to them that I absolutely adore. Other great songs for me are It's What We Do, Skins, On Noodle Street, the two Allons-y pieces, and Talkin' Hawkin'. While I'd probably go for something like Kid A or Selected Ambient Works if I wanted to listen to ambient music, I still think it's a solid ambient rock album. Maybe not the best album for the band to go out on, but it's still an enjoyable listen. I think I prefer it over A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Final Cut.

This has to be some of Pink Floyd's finest work ever! It has a mix of reminiscent sounds from Pink Floyd's early past and Richard's Hammond organ is spectacular along with David's classic guitar solo sound! Definitly one of my favourite Floyd Albums, I could listen to it all day.

It seems clear from the interviews with Dave that he finished this project for Nick. It seems Nick really wanted to do this and Dave was reluctant to tackle the project. When you need to reduce stress put it on. Just lose yourself in peaceful ambient Pink Floyd. This music grows on you. Its a bit of history that deserves to be heard. I am ok that it is made of unfinished works, because it cannot be finished, Rick is gone.

I tend to disagree with your thoughts on Louder than Words. I've seen it as more of a "tired sigh" of a song, which feels fitting for Pink Floyd's turbulent history, and it is ultimately a song that celebrates the bands own legacy. In that regard, I think it works really well, though I am also a fan of Skins. Now, I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the redux, lol. Thank you for keeping this series going, JT! Much love!

One other thing I greatly appreciate about this album is its level of detail listing every instrument played on the album and who played what instrument. Well, think of it this way: It's coming up on the 10th anniversary of The Endless River. They *may* do a special anniversary release. Or wait for another 21 years and they'll do some sort of special edition collection, like they've done with everything else. Keep in mind that there are legal reasons for this--mainly that some of the copyrights expire at a certain point. That's one reason for all of the "special" releases, too. It doesn't hurt that NOT putting out new material, and re-releasing special editions means extra "FREE" money in ye old coffers with minimal effort from the original band. All they need is new/updated engineering. Billy Joel was once quoted as saying he never has to write another new song, as he still makes so much money off his old stuff, he'll never run out of money (paraphrasing).

There is nothing wrong at all with releasing this extra material, actually, it is a gift. Even if there are only a few moments that you like, they are moments you never had before. Only music snobs have issues with this album or unreasonable people who still expect the 1970s Pink Floyd 40 years later or those still beating the annoying "without (fill in the blank) it ain't PF" drum.

I don't understand the hate for this album. I'm not a fan of the Gilmour-era of Floyd at all, but for me this is easily the best of the three albums. While not being up there with their Seventies peak, I think because it foregrounds atmosphere, texture and space - Gilmour and Wright's strengths - over songwriting it's a much more satisfying listen than either Division Bell or Momentary Lapse. And there are frequent lovely moments on it. Autumn 68 is magisterial (if brief) and it's great to hear Nick Mason's first drum solo since Dark Side of the Moon in 1973! As JT says, The Endless River is a relaxing album, perfect for chllling-out to, but I agree with him about Louder Than Words. It's a real bum note to end not only the album but Floyd's recording career on. Especially when High Hopes was already the perfect full-stop.

Got this album around Christmas in 2014. Spent the whole day listening to it, start to finish, listening and really digging it. I'll admit, I do think maybe the lyrics on "Louder Than Words" could've use a bit more work, but I still enjoy the song. Overall, I love the album for what it is, and I do consider it a great tribute to Richard Wright. It may be mostly instrumental (which is where it gets the most criticism), but it is very, very, VERY far from being the Floyd's worst album, that title belongs to the studio tracks of Ummagumma, and most of the music off of The Final Cut. Also, I really loved watching your reviews on the Floyd, and I'm gonna check out more of your stuff man. Did a fantastic job.

While I admit lyrically it’s not as strong some of Polly’s earlier works, I think the lyrics get the job done. This album and Division Bell for me kind of cemented that Roger was more important musically than a lot of people gave him credit for (at least for my tastes). I don’t care for either of them, though I understand why some like/love them. I’d give an album like Amused To Death far higher marks than either of these two albums, but again it’s all about personal preference.

This is a fascinating review of The Endless River, and I also agree with your great idea that David and Mason should reunite with Roger and record even just one song together. This ending of the record would be more appropriate and sincere, even a genuine "final cut" at the end of the road for the magnificent band Pink Floyd. I see this record as a completion of Gilmour's endeavour to restore a balance between the music and lyrics, of course in favour of music (according to his personal vision after The Wall, and especially after The Final Cut when the lyrics became predominant, of course, because of Roger's vision and even it was necessary for a political commentary that Roger Waters presented at that time.). This "imbalance" was also a reflection of the conflicting relations between Roger and other band members that finally destroyed the band. Still, Gilmour tried to patch up this relationship that would restore a balance towards music as opposed to the lyrics, which are very important in Pink Floyd's music.

I enjoy The Endless River, even though I think it is probably the most out of place studio record in their discography (definitely not the worst though). I was actually thinking the other day how nice it would have been for Roger to at least write the lyrics for last track. I also think it would have been cool if they sampled Rick's little tribute to See Emily Play at the end of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, would be a perfect tribute to the two passed members.

This album should be example #1 of why singing is important to pop music (not an insult; any non-classical, non-jazz music). It had so much potential, but the audience will be severely limited due to the lack of singing except for one song.

I think its pretty good. It's Pink Floyd make a flowing Mike Oldfield - who like PF also released a very big album in 1973- style ambient album from TDB out takes and jams. So its not a regular PF album. These familiar but not melodies, motifs and soundscapes represent a big chunk of their history they revisit in a fresh way and serves as a fitting epitaph for the band. I disagree with JT's verdict on Louder Than Words - Its a fantastic song and great way for PF to bow out.

I just got done listening to it, and I gotta say it is just AS GOOD as The Division Bell, almost the entire album has great instrumental of David, Nick, and Rick, and dude I’m sorry but I gotta disagree with the song “Louder than Words”, it’s a sick song and the album itself is a perfect way to dedicate it to not only Rick’s memory but Syd Barrett’s memory too. I do agree 100% with “Talking Hawking” as the essential track, that song and Louder than Words are really great songs. I’ll give it a GOLDFISH rating

This album was never meant to be an album for the people. It was never meant to sell. We need to remember that this album was created with material that didn't make it into The Division Bell. It's literally the offcuts, the stuff that wasn't good enough for an album. This album is just David's way of closing the book on Pink Floyd after Rick's passing. Giving him a send-off with an album filled with the music the two of them made in various jam sessions, when life was good. These aren't the clean, crisp photos you work hard on to show off to everyone. These are those random candid photos you took of a now departed relative, and the only ones you still have, and the only ones you will ever have. For that reason this album is significant to us fans, but maybe mediocre to everyone else. But the only reason it's not as good as it should have is because the song ideas don't feel fleshed out. Which is for a very obvious reason. They feel more like jam sessions than songs, because ultimately that's what they are. David's guitar work is, as always, outstanding. The E-Bow acoustic sounds absolutely haunting. Sum is a standout song for me. Allons-y sounds so much like David's solo work from the '80s. Nervana is something I never thought I'd hear Pink Floyd play. It's channelling Childhood's End, or maybe Not Now John. I think that this is a pretty good album, to be honest. Considering the base material and the goal, it was impossible for it to ever be more than what it is. But I also like the nostalgia it brings. You'd be listening to it and you'd start hearing Shine On You Crazy Diamond. And right after you're hearing Marooned. And then you're back in the '80s on David's solo albums. And then you're in the '70s. I think it's great. I would recommend it.

I’m a HUGE Pink Floyd junkie, but I’ve only listened to TER twice the entire time I’ve owned it, despite pre-ordering it. Ambient just doesn’t do it for me. There wasn’t really anything anywhere that I remember being able to point to as a melody. The “songs” (and I hesitate to call them that because they all just feel like germs and snippets of something that should have been bigger and more fleshed out) aren’t cohesive within themselves let alone the context of the album. It really feels like a collection of the “Nothings” that they shelved and never came back to, until just dumping them onto the master for TER as they were. I have to admit, though, it is very in line with David’s last two solo albums, and his taste for ambient and when can only generously be described as “adult contemporary”. It’s music that sounds like it was both made at and meant to be listened to at 3:30 in the morning in the semi-consciousness of brief waking before falling back asleep.

I wish Roger could understand the importance of individual relationships and the beauty and importance of the moment and I wish David could see the dire importance of standing with the hurt, expressed and exploited the world over. That they could cut through their different perspectives and lay down just one track making up.

I'm not nearly as negative in my view of "Louder Than Words," but I think that I can perhaps see your point. It's not anything like "The Garden" by Rush (their swan song from Clockwork Angels). It could be that the execution of the original intent was out of their reach, and though Polly gave a good crack at it, she's ultimately an outsider to the what transpired in the band before the mid 1980s. The journalistic perspective won't work too well on such a personal subject.

I love the endless river. I feel like it’s a near perfect end to the Pink Floyd story. Only things that could have made it better is if Roger jammed with them on some of the tracks and maybe even a couple recordings of Syd, even if it’s just a voice clip from an interview. Solid album and a perfect experience to just put on headphones and lay down outside on a nice sunny day. Pink Floyd started out doing long jams in the UFO club, and it’s only fitting that their final release is just a solid collection of jamming

When I read that Pink Floyd aka Gilmour & Mason, went back into the studio with background singers for an album. I was thrilled to death of a new Floyd album clearly without Waters. Anyone could tell watching that Live 8 "Reunion" gig. It was over between Gilmour/Wright & Waters. Anyway, The Endless River came out in 2014. Six years after the passing of Richard. Eight years after David's *On an Island* solo album. Twenty years after the released of the *Division Bell.* *The Endless River* was awful. Clearly the worst entry in the Pink Floyd catalog. Richard deserved better then a money grab album.

Actually they did. Paul took John, George and Ringo to court over the Allen Klein situation. And at this time in Pink Floyd's history, Live 8 had happened and David and Roger appeared onstage a couple of times, so it's possible it could have happened in 2014. Not so much in 2023 for sure.
