To use his example, I was that near 400lb guy in a normal gym, going 1mph on a treadmill drenched in sweat, barely hanging on. If anything, the community was cheering me on. It's been my experience that people in normal gyms absolutely aren't sitting there harassing new/overweight people. As long as you're there to put in the work, I've never met a more inviting community. Since I moved and had to use a Planet Fitness due to lack of a real gym in the area, I've never felt more judged at a gym. I'm down to 260lbs and now I'm in a gym that doesn't allow barbells, heavy weight, large waterbells, etc. And on top of that, we're in the gym trying to lose weight and you've got a gym shoving pizza, bagels, and donuts at people. Most of us are the size we are because of our lack of self-control, and you offer up a vice? Good business model, but as a gym, this place is a joke.

Asmon saying he can do curls for 10 reps of 40 is the biggest cap ever

The “gym bros” are the best part at my gym, if your doing something wrong they will nicely show you how to not hurt yourself and the best way to get your gains. Best cheerleaders as well

On the topic of the "lunk alarm": I've 100% experienced this at Planet Fitness. I was new to a leg press machine, was having trouble locking the back into place for positioning it properly, dropped the metal bar (that was probably less than 5lbs) used to lock it into place, and suddenly my ears are exploding. If anything, it made me feel self-conscious and judged for not knowing how to adjust the back of the machine. I wasn't kicked out or anything, but it was extremely unsettling with how random and insanely loud it was, and if I had been lifting weights at the time, I very well may have dropped them.

the funny thing is the non-judgmental environment of planet fitness is somewhat redundant now, because gym culture frowns heavily on mocking people who are trying to make a change and improve their health. last time I saw someone mocking a fat person at the gym was also the time I saw a beef cake lifter scold said person making fun of that fat person and got right in his face, we want people to improve and feel comfortable in the gym.

I've been lunk alarmed at a PF because I used too heavy of dumbbells and I guess somebody complained. Had to use PF because it was the only gym near the hotel on my trip. I am not an ego lifter, nor judgmental towards anyone stepping foot in a gym to meet whatever goal they have set for themselves. I felt so awkward when the employee came over to me to tell me that the alarm was gong off due to me. I honestly had no idea what to do or how to act and felt too uncomfortable to finish my workout. I didn't drop the weights, make any grunting noises or anything. Someone was just upset by me existing there. I put the weights back and left. If this is the type of environment you want PF to be by all means I will stay the F away.

i worked the planet fitness overnight desk position, did it for 2 years. It was super easy just had to file some paperwork at midnight,answered calls which was usually just somebody prank calling. Whenever anyone asked me a question over the phone, i could not just answer it, i had to drone on and on from this script we had to read. I felt like a robot, my manager was a nice guy but planet fitness had him by the balls. I remember an elderly woman calling me one time and my boss was there, she was telling me her husband had passed and would like to cancel,my boss had the nerve to ask for proof of his death to cancel it, i was appalled.

I was really obese, and Planet Fitness made me feel more uncomfortable than a real gym. At planet fitness, everyone was reserved and side eyeing, etc. And it really didn't feel like anyone there could help you. But once I started going to a real gym, all the people there were extremely friendly and helpful and wanted nothing from you but to help you succeed in your fitness journey. I think planet fitness creates its own toxic environment by alienating all the people who truly care about fitness.

The pizzas and bagels are actually a much bigger issue than it seems. Your gut determines what you’re having cravings for and people who need to lose weight need to change their gut microbes in order to diet effectively long term. This often requires a few months of completely burning any carbs or unsaturated fats out of your diet, but that can’t happen if your eating pizza and bagels once a month.
@JunGuam671
I’ve been a gym rat for decades and seeing people who aren’t fit in the gym is so motivational! I love you working out and sharing any knowledge I have! If you’re a bully you don’t belong in a gym.

I'm a skinny dude, I got kicked out for curling 'too much' and someone complained. As one does, I had two 35lbs, was curling and overhead pressing. Appearently that made someone feel bad.

I will say one annoying thing is that a lot of gyms have adopted this "safe space" mentality because they see its marketable. So it's getting to the point where you can't seriously lift most places without worrying you'll offend someone or God forbid "intimidate" them.

For anyone who is unsure about going to the gym when you are fat, people are focusing on themselves, they know you are focusing on yourself also, just try make sure you know how to use things but don't be scared to look confused when figuring out a machine or asking someone for help with a machine (most have diagrams of how to use them)

I’m a personal trainer and I deliberately choose people who look gross bc I know I can make them look fuckable and when they transform themselves and start to get really happy about their progress that’s a great feeling

As a certified personal trainer and someone who has worked in the fitness industry for almost 15 years, I can confirm that January 1st is very much like a new release in games.

As far as the Pizza/Bagel days at the gym… that’s just so messed up. As someone who has worked VERY hard on cutting calories and eating healthier over the last year, I can speak from experience and in the beginning for me it was so hard to stay on track with my diet. It is so easy for that one slice of pizza to suddenly trigger cravings and false ideas of “I deserve it” after working hard. Then all of a sudden that cheat meal turns into a cheat day. Sure, at the end of the day the responsibility lies with me to control myself but they definitely aren’t making it easy by rubbing the food in your face. Food can be a serious addiction.

I think the biggest problem with the lunch alarm is a contradicts their supposed idea of a 'judgment free zone'
