I've been photographing my local Geese flocks in Autumn for years. Now, I'm trying to capture specific photos - ones that depict the atmosphere... and tell a story, but you have to put in the time and effort. In this video I share my tips on planning, in order to find the best positions. I'm largely using a Canon 400mm f/5.6 lens - a great budget option for beginner photographers. My preferred exposure technique for shooting birds in the mist is Aperture Priority with Auto ISO.
Filmed with Canon M50 and 15-45mm lens.
Equipment: Canon 1DX Mark i; Canon 400mm f/5.6 lens; Canon 500mm f/4 Mark i lens; F-Stop Satori camera bag
My equipment: If you purchase any of these items, that I use and recommend, through the Amazon links I receive a small commission which is massively appreciated and it helps me to keep creating new videos.

As a full-time working married father of two young children, I am forced to go with the flow 99% of the time. I long for the day where things will slow down so I can set such goals. Beautiful images, Paul!

Thank you my friend. Might not get many more opportunities now - September is probably best month for it. God knows when I'll next get mist..

Hi Paul another good watch , I don't get out as much as I used to but when I do I don't go with any preplanned idea I now prefer to enjoy the environment I'm in and if I get a couple of images then it's a bonus if I don't I still had a nice walk but I do respect people like yourself who go out with a specific plan in mind. Until next time take care and stay safe my friend.

No specific plan, just walk the same beach in North Carolina every day and it's amazing that no two days are alike. At the moment we are getting migratory birds stopping for a breather on their way further south.

Hey Paul, I generally go out with a plan to photograph a particular species in a particular scenario. But I end up photographing a lot more!! Especially at St.A's, lol. As you say you need to make the most of the momenst of good light here in the UK and that for me does have an effect on my plans!

For me, it really depends on how much time I have if I set goals or not. When I don't have much time, I usually just enjoy going with the flow and the chance of not getting a shot at all can be too frustrating. But when I do have time, I absolutely enjoy the challenge! Loved the video, good luck with the mist!

Good luck with your challenge, I think you already have some lovely shots of the geese. I have been trying for the last few years to get one shot of birds in flight that I am happy with. Today at S.R I managed it unexpectedly !!!! I went for the deer and got a bonus of geese ; ) PS it was nice to see you this morning . Take care and please keep on making these inspirational videos Teddy

Loved this video, Paul, as the subject covered is something I have been trying to come to grips with. Lovely images, I was intrigued by your use of lower shutter speeds and my favourite image was of the Graylag geese at 8:37. Thank you.
@PaulMiguelPhotography
@PaulMiguelPhotography 2 года назад
I have been really enjoying the slower shutter speeds lately. That image was one of the better ones - if I can get enough mist at sunrise it's possible, but you just need so many things to come together.

Hi Paul! Great video! I can relate to your perfect situation experience in this video. I was out waiting for the sun, for a scenery shot for my screensaver. I herd a Canada goose hoking, when I turned to see what the commotion was all about! I wasn't ready for what I saw! Can you comment on how to get "more" ready

Another useful vlog, Q in the mist, what white balance would you use, if weren't using K for white balance?
@PaulMiguelPhotography
@PaulMiguelPhotography 2 года назад
Hi James. I always have it set on 5300K apart from night photography. I would probably use sunny white balance otherwise. I guess tungsten would be worth a try too, when it's very low light.

Thanks Paul loved your video. Could you tell me what AF Mode do you use for shooting flocks of birds ?
@PaulMiguelPhotography

Cheers. I would use Servo. Focus points I would use either single focus point or expanded. I would still aim to focus on one bird / one area in the flock if possible.

"It' getting busier now.. loads of people" Smirks...Love it! I'm guessing you're not too keen on people then Paul? LOL By the way, just as a matter of interest, what do you think the shutter count is up to on your camera? Must run into millions surely?
@PaulMiguelPhotography
@PaulMiguelPhotography 2 года назад
Some people are ok... Yeah, I don't know the shutter count but it's quite a lot. The camera won't last for ever but I'll probably use it until it dies.

@@PaulMiguelPhotography My Lumix is on it's last legs. I'm a bit concerned to be honest because I can't really afford to replace it yet, so I just hope it lasts long enough for me to be able to! Shutter count must be over 100,000.
