Watch how your glasses are made after your sight test.
This is what happens behind the scenes once you have your prescription ready and you have picked your frames and lenses.
Things may vary depending upon your prescription, requirements and location, but the general practice is the same.
There are two types of lenses that your prescription will be, Stock lenses, or Surfaced lenses.
Stock lenses are mass produced and are available in thousands of different prescriptions and lens types. They are pre made and ready to use which makes the turn around time quicker and these types of lenses can also be held in stock by your eyewear or manufacturer. There are limitations to these stock lenses in terms of what prescriptions and labs types that are available.
This is where Surfaced lenses come in to play, these lenses are custom made, specifically to your prescription, measurements, frame type and other important factors. Varifocals, Bifocals, complex or higher prescriptions are all examples of surfaced lens. As they are custom made, they do take longer, depending where you are in the world.
The blocking and tracing process is standard procedure for all types of eyewear manufacturing, albeit changing ever so slightly depending upon what type of lenses and/or frame you are ordering.
The tracer scans the inside rim of the frame to take various measurements, it also tells the other glazing/edging machine what shape to cut the lenses.
The second element is to "block" the lens. This is the process of applying a special plastic block with an adhesive pad to help it stick to the lense. It's this block that holds the lens in place in the chucks (where the lens is held) during the cutting/edging/glazing process. The location of the pad on the lens is crucial as it is apparent to the various elements of your prescription and personal measurements.
When the lens is ready for cutting, the information is sent over from the other machine so it knows what shape to cut the lenses to.
The edging/glazing machine will use various process and tools within the machine, depending upon what the lens type and frame are. Times will vary during this process but the process for most lenses is under 5 minutes per lens. Complex lenses such as rimless (with holes that need to be drilled) or special lens materials such as polycarbonate normally take longer.
When the lenses are cut, they are then ready to be assembled with the frame. Plastic frames (not all) may require a frame heater to make the plastic softer and easier to work with when inserting the lense. A metal frame that requires screws, simply requires and optical screwdriver for assembly.
I always use a thread lock on the screw thread as it prevents them from falling out or coming loose over time. I do not use this type of thread lock when using polycarbonate lenses as the chemicals from the thread lock can damage the lens.
Once the glasses are assembled, it's then time to put them through quality control. Here lots of different aspect are checked, such as the prescription, measurements, order details and much more. Here is where I also inspect the lenses and coatings for quality. The glasses are only able to leave the lab once they are checked off and they have passed all checks.

@@tuffguy8656 hi, thanks for your question. Your -0.25 cylinder power is just the prescription to correct a very small astigmatism, it's so low that the next number down is 0, to give you an idea. Your prescription like this isn't a representation of your eye health. Everyone is individual and you should take the advice from your Opticians as they will know what is best for your personal needs. As an idea, I have a higher cylinder power than you and I don't often wear my glasses, but that's just me, everyone is different, your eyes may be more or less sensitive to a prescription. Hope this helps.

I had my first glasses in 1956 (wearing all the time), still go to the same practice as I did then but now 3 optometrists later. Back then it was glass lenses only which were heavy as were the frames, this was well before the invention of transition lenses which I find absolutely wonderful.

I found this by searching, "filling out eyeglass prescription," as I wanted to get a better feel on how my prescription lens are filled. I've had one returned lens to my regular health care provider because of an incorrect filling that caused strange viewing sensations, and a couple abnormalities with a mail order company, where the tint began to chip prematurely. Can you do a video on stain/frosted vs polished edges on different type of glasses. My glasses have a white ring around them face on, on a -4 prescription on a 1.67 lens. Some people may notice more of a difference other than others. I would recommend that you see your opticians and go through this with them. @precisionopticseyewear 2 года назад
Hi Ash, thanks for watching and your comment too. First of all congratulations and best of luck. When is your trial shift? Funny enough, this is where I started of my optical career! Working in the lab is really cool, there be processes and procedures to lots of things, some of which are done for efficiency etc. Lots of labs have different set ups, with a different sized team. Just enjoy the process. Even if you start literally cleaning some job trays...its all what you make of it. Don't be scared to take notes. Specsavers like to see when a team member can equally be independent and relied upon. Don't try and be a hero straight away, but learn as much as you can, go on and ask to go on any courses they put forwards. In terms of your trial shift, all I can say is what I would look for in a new employee, as I was part of the management at Specsavers where I had to work with new employees plus interviews and trials etc. I'd personally look for someone who I believe I can get along with and they seem to have a level of reliability, responsibility. A good employer of this role will hire based upon personality.... not skill. You are new, you're not going to know anything. Skills can be taught....personality can't.

@precisionopticseyewear
@precisionopticseyewear 2 года назад
Hi, thanks for your question 😎 Do you mean what processes and tools are used to remove scratches? If so, then there is normally nothing that can be done unfortunately. If it was a very light scratch or a coating that is lifting, then there are chemicals to strip off this top layer coaitng, however it would still show the scratches on the lens itself if it was deep enough. Generally speaking the only thing to do is to replace them, as buffing, sanding and polishing the lens surfaces can effectively alter the prescription. Hope this helps 👍 Colin

Dear Colin. I am old now and have eyes tested every 18 months or so and recent test revealed a slight changes requiring new bifocals which I normally have in high index material and coated etc. I could see from the new prescription that there was and increase from -6 to -6.5 D and that subtle changes had been made to the axis and prism. Got the new glasses back the other day and right from the off it was obvious that the right eye lens was wrong as all images where ghosting and out of focus. Where in all this automation could things have gone wrong? My Optician has of course sent these new frames and lenses back to the lab for re-doing both lenses or at least the faulty one.
@precisionopticseyewear
@precisionopticseyewear 2 года назад
Thank you for your message. Yes an interesting one there....thete are a few areas that could cause this. As you say there is alot of automation but only based on what the Optician (a human) can prescribe. Where a human is testing a human its a mixture of opinions/experiences based on what you see in that test time, how it's interperated and then made. The test could be absolutely fine, it may be too much of a jump for your eyes to settle with, you may need a stepping stone in between. The lenses may be have more or less Prism than required..... The list goes on 😅 It could be more than one... from experiences ghosting is normally something to do with the Prism so it will be interesting to see what they say. When will they let you know?

Hi Kim, ghabks for watching and also for your question. I can't comment on other eyewear providers, but for myself, I am always more than happy to use frames that my client may have found from elsewhere. Check with who is making you lenses for you and see if they are happy to use a frame that you supply. Look at the measurements of your current frae and use these to help pick one that's either smaller, same size or bigger, depending upon what you want and need. There will be 3 measurements that you will see that look something like this 45□17 135 (numbers will be different) The biggest number before the □ is the width of the lens, the smaller number after is the distance between the lenses (bridge size) and the 3 diget number is the length of the side/arm. Hopefully this helps!

Question…my wife just got a new prescription eyeglass for close up reading and work. She has good faraway vision, we are seniors. The lense and frames were fairly big for a reader frame but that’s what they recommended. She could not use them, she said when she looked down through the lenses it was blurry, like looking down at the keyboard for typing. Straight ahead to the monitor was ok. Couldn’t wear them , took them back and explained her problem. The doctor said they just ground the line of sight in the middle? I told her, they are readers, there shouldn’t be a line of sight, the lense should all be the same power. Does this sound correct? So they are now making her a new pair with a smaller frame, comparable to her old frame.

Hi Fred, thanks for your question. So really there could be a few things going on here really. Hard to say without a bit more information. With regards to the issues with the visit for computer work, did your wife mention that she wanted to be able to use the computer as well? The reason I ask is that many times, a reading prescription is made for near use work, I.e reading a book, when you start getting a bit further away, at arms length for example when using a computer, an intermediate prescription can be required instead of reading. Has your wife tried the newly remade glasses yet? Kind regards Colin

@@precisionopticseyewear She hasn't gotten her new frame and lens yet. I still think he was blowing smoke about about the line of sight being not where she needed it. She's able to use readers for computer work now, so I don't know why they would make them any different. I wasn't to impressed with the finish of the lenses, had quite a few pit marks like they weren't polished well. Maybe that was acceptable for their QC?

I can't comment or give you medical advice based on this information, but this result basically means that you can read the test letter at 50 feet where someone with very good/normal vision can read it at 150 feet. So 20/20 is deemed the norm. These numbers don't correspond to the health of your eyes. The numbers you have mentioned are all about you quality of vision which is called your visual acuity. Hi, thanks for your question. The thing is that Opticians are highly trained professionals, so we should have confidence in what they are prescribing us, however, we also know our own body, especially eyes. The differences you are noticing may just be a period of adapting to th new prescription, especially if you have been used to the old one for some time. Equally so, yous should also speak to your Optician, sometimes even though the prescription that is given is technically and clinically correc, sometimes a "stepping stone" might have to be added to get you there. So for example, the new prescription may be too much of a big jump, you may need something in between and en have this new one in a year or two for example. The best thing to do is to speak to your optician, they can also check over the glasses too and make sure everything is ok. Hope this helps!

Got a question. So i been wearing my pair of glasses for 2 years and then i decided to change my lenses on them since they were all scratched up. Got my pair with the new lenses on them but the lenses didn’t fit properly and i was told the reason why is because my glasses shrunk over the 2 years i wore them. Can this be true ? I feltlike it was a dumb excuse for not doing a final inspection. My glasses had no bottom frame for the lenses.
@dhan3766
@dhan3766 Год назад
Maybe they just want you to buy a frame as well. Or they made mistake in cutting and measuring
@precisionopticseyewear
@precisionopticseyewear Год назад
Even if your frames had "shrunk" there is still no real excuse for poor fitting lenses unless the frame is damaged etc. Sounds like they have scanned the existing shape of the original lens and the new one has been cut too small. A shrinking frame would make loose lenses, if anything it would make them tighter. Ask them to remove the lenses and tighten the supra cord at the bottom, it should pull the lens in tighter

How is cylindrical value and axis incorporated? Example: -0.75 with -0.25/61
@precisionopticseyewear
@precisionopticseyewear 3 года назад
You can only have an axis if you have a cylinder power. The axis basically refers to the orientation of the lens. If you have no cylinder power and only a spherical power, then the orientation does not matter hence why you will have no axis there. Cylinder powers are there to correct astigmatism, which is the slight elongation of the lens. Hope this helps 🙂

@Enemji 3 года назад
@@precisionopticseyewear - Thanks for the response. I was querying on how actually is that manufactured ?
@precisionopticseyewear
@precisionopticseyewear 3 года назад
@@Enemji it will be dependent upon what lens the prescription is being made into and the material. @@Enemji If you look at the video frames 0:33-0:38 (about 5 seconds) you'll see that they have pre-made lenses in all manner of sphere and cylinder combinations (S and C markings). lol I just googled those glasses, no surprise no one can install lense there. You know that basic lenses are produced in diameter of 70 or 75 mm, plus master should find pupil distance and make from 75 mm something about 50mm. so basically final lense cannot be more than 50mm. So basically you may create completely custom lense for your glasses but it will cost maybe 3-4k dollars. if you really stuck to those glasses you may use contacts.
