I like your sharpening videos but as a professional sharpener i have to say a few things. Softer stones are not bad and if you cut into the stone while sharpening you put way to much pressure, softer stones have way more feedback than harder stones, 2. Learn to switch hands so that the edge of the knife is facing you at both sides while sharpening so your bevel consistency will be way better, 3. No pressure at all the apex is very weak against lateral force so you will bend the apex on the stones and your end result will be much duller, 4. Deburr on the stones on every stone, if your knife didnt shave hair after your 400 grit stone you didnt get the full potential of of your blade, if you dont deburr on every stone you will end up with a stubborn burr at the end that holds on to the blade and if you strop it agressiv you tore it of your apex and it takes good metal with it, if you weaken and remove the burr at every stone with as little pressure as possible the burr wil remove easyer and your knife will have a much cleaner sharper edge with more bite, 5. Dont over strop, you round your apex, a decent steel that is sharpen properly is easy to deburr just 2-3 controlled strokes on smoth leather or basswood with diamond spray on it is enough. best wishes from germany

I learned to sharpen from watching Virtuovoice and thanks to his videos and a lot of practice , I now get my knives scary sharp. I’d like to add another pro tip onto what Maarten said: Aside from paying attention to the sound, also pay attention to the feel. Happy Thursday! I have been waiting... OK now I've got my DBK fix! Phew! More good sharpening tips guys. I've struggled for a long time to get consistent results with stones, I think my problem is I just don't sharpen frequently enough to get the muscle memory. BUT I recently bought the work sharp ken onion with knife grinder and that is really pretty easy to use. I used it to reprofiled my benchmade mini barrage to a 15-ish degree convex and the result was just the weight of the knife would slice through printer paper. Pretty sharp stuff. I'm not giving up on water stones though, they are still a more elegant and civilized way to sharpen. Thanks dudes. Oh yeah, I got a Fallkniven Scout in the mail yesterday and I already love it, it's just so cute!

@SekeNoLike
@SekeNoLike 7 месяцев назад
Yeah but I struggle to find the right angle, rn my benchmade 940 is at like a 17 degree angle which I think is too shallow and tbh I’m so scared to add a convex edge to any of my knives. I’ve only ever been around v edges my whole life. And I don’t use stones I used on the the work sharps. Also, most my knives are well past the 100-200 dollar range and to me that’s a lot and i don’t wanna fuck up any of the knives

I get good results with stropping carbon steel. It's all I do for month of use. It always comes back to pleasant shaving sharpness. Unless I damage the edge, then I need to relearn the stone. My strop uses hard buffalo leather though, and I barely press on it. Just experiment a bit after you get down the basics, and you will find something that fits your needs and skill.

I have had my old Lansky sharpening kit since 1994, and it is good for me since I have never had luck with stone sharpening by hand. I can do chisels and plane blades just fine but pretty sketchy on knives. This week I made 4 new “stones” for the Lansky. I had a set of those cheap diamond plates ($20 for 400, 600, 1000, 1200). So I glued on some timber backings, drilled a guide hole, and set in a set screw, just like on the original Lansky stones. I’ve sharpened a few knives and honestly, for an amateur, it’s easy and reliable to get near perfect results, especially on large knives. The diamond cuts fast. I finish with the Lansky ultra fine stone, and it works great. I admire your skills Marten, but I don’t think I could do any better than the old Lansky kit. Bravo to you both. Love the channel. I wish you great success and long lives.

@AdamJohnson-dr2ri
@AdamJohnson-dr2ri 11 месяцев назад
My clamp style sharpener cannot be adjusted precisely but for a newbie it can still slightly convex or do a multi angle, with a better setup like a wicked edge you “should” be able to get really close to a convex with more control and then follow up with a very fine stone/strop to mostly round the edge out. I’ve only played with two angles so far but at some point I will buy a WE, when a knife hits the $250 plus price range I don’t trust myself to freehand sharpen(disclaimer, I’ve never owned higher end stones so that may play a big part in my semi disappointing results with freehand…I can freehand to the lvl of sharpness that most ppl would call sharp but getting to the next lvl so far has required a clamp style).

He mannen, top video.

Martin, could you and that other guy(lol) do a video on your personal favorite sharpening stones. Coming from a guy that learned freehand sharpening from a series of diamond rods and files, I've really wanted to get into whet stones and ceramics. Another thing I've been trying to do is get a edge and hair to actually wittle. Shaving sharp is no problem but it's that final 10% I need help with. You and that other guy are awesome.
