Ever since Qatar won the rights to host the FIFA World Cup in 2010, its treatment of migrant workers has made international headlines. News stories and human rights organizations revealed migrant workers who built the stadiums, hotels, and all the new infrastructure required for the World Cup were being forced to work, not getting paid, unable to leave, and in some cases, dying.
At the heart of the abuse faced by migrant workers is the kafala system. A system prevalent in Gulf states that ties workers to their sponsors, it often gives sponsors almost total control of migrant workers’ employment and immigration status.
Due to all the scrutiny Qatar has been under, some reforms have been put in place, but the kafala system is more than a law - it’s a practice. And while these reforms exist on paper, human rights organizations say there’s still a long way to go.
To understand how hundreds of thousands of migrant workers were stuck in an exploitative system while building the stadiums for the World Cup, watch our 10-minute video above.

my uncle in his younger days used to work in a middle eastern country with a name similar to the USA (censoring), he worked in a cleaning team, the kind you hire to clean your home/hotel, he worked that way for a year and later got an offer to become the house help of a sheikh there, he agreed to it, they told him they need his passport for visa stuff and he did give it to them, and was told to come to work immediately, to his horror HE WAS TRAPPED. his passport was not given back to him and he was supposed to live with them in a horribly maintained servant quaters. he worked there for around 5 months, luckily the sheikh's wife was fond of him. he kept requesting her to give him his passport so he can be free. although initially she disagreed his pleas, eventually she was able to give him back his passport and he was able to escape from there. he was never paid for the work he did there. later on, he went to work in america and said altho he faced racism there, it is nothing compared to the sub human treatment he got in that country.

I am from Bangladesh, lots of my relatives and Brothers are working in Middle East including Qatar. The situation is, the people who go there for work are mostly unskilled and uneducated. They try and want to go Europ, America and others country but failed and rejected. This is Qatar and Middle East who give them the opportunity to come and earn 10 times higher than their native country. The average construction worker in my country earn 3-5 dollers a day where in Qatar they get more than 30 dollers a day. That's why they risk their life to go Qatar like country to change their fate.This video tells that people are fall in debt to arrange the cost of going Qatar, It's take six time more money to go europ for the same working visa than Qatar. If middle east stop hairing people from countries like us it will be huge loss not only for individual like me but also for the hole countries economy because remittance from those countries is a major source of foreign income.

Yes! Most of the foreign labourers working in Qatar are from poor economic background and does not have skills to work in white collar jobs(most are from villages too) that's why they are desperate to work any jobs anywhere as long as it pays good. Qatar ,being amongst the richest nations on earth have very good wages even for labourers,but sadly, they also treat the workers like animals and don't mind if anyone dies as they know that there are millions ready to replace such unskilled labourers. Both the home country and Qatar needs to solve these problems on their sides

I never did go back to school. At some point, I had enough. I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia and was trying to make a presence in the Jeddah art scene. But the people I met in that scene were wonderful but I knew the government didn't want me and other immigrants' children there anymore-and they would only make our lives harder as the years went on. This story is a perfect example why employers should not have control over the lives of workers in ANY ASPECT. We are citizens and we should have a right to work and maintain our rights and working conditions without fear of retaliation or abuse. If Americans and other countries can look at this and see the problem then they should be able to see the problem with having their own healthcare, housing, food, and basic living attached to their employer instead of having a community based environment that guarantees basic resources we all depend on for survival and freedom. A third realm separate from businesses and government. Where you can live free and have the equal opportunity to work and pursue your ambitions and not have those things compromised because an employer and a complicit government decide they can get you to do whatever they want. If we keep sitting on this, it will only get worse at home just like Qatar. Workers rights are human rights.

I can't say Kafala system is bad or good. What makes it bad is the country sending these workers and the country receiving. It is a contract between the worker who often happen to be not educated and an agent who will try to profit from both sides. The person has the work has to pay visa fees, flights both ways, accommodation and extra to have a worker that has agreed to work for him on a based salary for Two years (visa duration). Having paid all that money in advance the work owner cannot give up on a contract and let the worker leave before thier visa expiry date is due. In some cases some horrible things happen in this system, and in many it works wonderfully and helps both sides. Kafala system has been running for decades even on Americans and Europeans and if someone has been unfairly treated in this system, the blame should go to both countries, sending or receiving.

It's a shame that the country didn't feel the need to pay the workers on humanitarian ground but because of the U.N pressure they had to pay.Normally developed countries don't come under the scrutiny of human rights abuses but Middle Eastern countries always come high.

Why don't they completely modernize their workforce and recruit highly skilled workers that have legit education credentials even for basic work like plumbing, construction and house them individually with their families in dignified structures with access to education, health care and world standard salaries?... As it's expected. Cheap labor on the expense of poor workers yet they demand perfection from them is like unfair

@vibhashreerao2929 Год назад
@@ollymartin9919 it isn't about critiquing qatar or every other country. it's about looking at conditions that drive these people to take such decisions. i think it's very valid logic, esp in terms of how every nation state is complicit in contributing to the plight of laborers and wage workers. not to mention that qatar has implemented labour reforms in 10 years what the west failed to do for centuries. i'm not supporting qatar and their lack of fair & safe administration. however, we do need to look at it cumulatively as the west seems to be wiping off their hands of similiar systems that function in their countries. if we're talking about human rights, let all countries come together to formulate safe working conditions and regulations for their own people. we need to advocate on behalf of the people, not selectively scrutinize nations. the us and other european countries did not expect qatar to win the bid to host the WC and have for years been trying to run a smear campaign. i don't want to be part of their agenda. common people will gain nothing out of this. edit : not to mention, it is foreign bodies/corporations owned by the west that benefit and reinforce these very regulations in qatar.

Tieing visa to the worker is not exclusive to Qatar. USA also does that. Just look at how many of the employees that stayed in Twitter stayed because they are immigrants that if they quit that job they are automatically illegal and in danger of deportation.
@youtubehandlessuckass
@youtubehandlessuckass Год назад
Agreed, but for those kinds of workers if they find a job at another company their visa is still good. Those US-based workers can still look for another job. A Chinese friend was fired from his job and was going to be deported, but got a job and was safe.

You forgot to mention in your ending line that after the final match is over, the stadiums will not only be a grim reminder of the human lives lost, but they will also be a reminder that everyone still went there and played football. That's the reality. You can point fingers at Qatar in the aftermath, but the fact remains that all the nation's teams still went there and played football. Those players in the video criticised slavery but still agreed to play in a stadium built by slaves.
