Imperial College, London 1968
Brian May and Tim Staffell, two long-time friends and students at the college who had previously played in a band together, decide to start a new band. May would play guitar and Staffeel would play bass and sing. They placed an ad for a “Mitch Mitchell/Ginger Baker type” drummer, and another Imperial College student named Roger Taylor auditioned and got the job. They named the band Smile, and soon began playing gigs all over town.
Soon, they caught the attention of the American record label Mercury Records, who signed them in 1969. They recorded three songs at Trident Studios in June. Meanwhile, Staffell’s friend Freddie Bulsara, who had been in various bands, had probably become Smile’s biggest fan. He was at all their shows, and kind of like an unofficial fourth member. However, Staffell didn’t like the direction Smile was going, and left the band to form a new one called Humpy Bong. Brian May and Roger Taylor still wanted to perform their songs, but they needed a new lead singer. Enter Freddie Bulsara, who enthusiastically took Staffell’s spot. Bulsara convinced them to change the band’s name to Queen. The next year, he would change his own name to Freddie Mercury.
Freddie sang beautifully, but wasn’t big on playing instruments, so Queen would need a bassist. The band went through three before John Deacon ended up joining the band, who not only excelled at bass but also at tinkering around with electronics. After that, Queen practiced relentlessly. As a four piece, they played their first show on July 2, 1971 at Surrey College. By that point, they had already recorded a four-song demo but had no luck attracting record labels with it.
Using his graphic design skills, Mercury designed a logo for the band based on the zodiac signs of its members. Those two lions represent Deacon and Taylor, both Leo, the crab represents May, who is Cancer, and the two fairies represent Mercury, who was Virgo.
In 1972, the band got their first break thanks to producers John Anthony and Roy Thomas Baker. They got them a management deal under Neptune Productions to try to help them get a record label. One of the biggest perks was access to Trident studios, one of the best recording studios in the world at the time. The band got lots of quality time learning how to produce magnificent recordings in those studios and recorded quite a few songs with Anthony and Baker.
The next year, Nepute Productions got them a contract with both Trident and EMI Records. On July 13, 1973, EMI released Queen’s self-titled debut studio album. Elektra Records released it in the United States. It was a mix of heavy metal and progressive rock, and the few critics who reviewed it generally loved it. However, the lead single, “Keep Yourself Alive,” didn’t do well, and the album failed to get much mainstream success. In November, Queen went on their first major tour to support the band Mott the Hoople.
After that tour, the band went right back to Trident Studios to finish recording songs for their second studio album. EMI and Elektra both released those songs as the album Queen II on March 8, 1974. The album ultimately also didn’t do that well, but the cover of the album first featured this iconic picture of the band, taken by Mick Rock. Also, the album featured the band’s first true hit song in the UK, “Seven Seas of Rhye.” Why was the song a hit? Well mostly because back in February the band appeared on the popular BBC program Top of the Pops after David Bowie had to cancel. Yep, they were a last-minute replacement.
To promote Queen II, the band went on their first-ever headlining tour of the United Kingdom. In April, they went on their first-ever tour in the United States. With their third album, Sheer Heart Attack, they entered the mainstream.

Somebody tossed a bouquet of flowers on the stage and Freddie threw them back to the audience 1 at a time, I got a red carnation which I kept for many years until one day I realized it wasn't around anymore and it was lost to many moves from apartment to apartment. one of my earliest core memories is watching Live Aid on a VHS tape with my dad in like 1999. he is the greatest Queen fan, and at some point he confessed to me that his only wish in life was that if he ever had a child they would love Queen. i kind of understand why … one of the greatest things that ever happened on this planet

My favourite Queen's songs are: 1. Bohemian Rhapsody 2. Another One Bites the Dust => always plays this at work when someone tenders his/her resignation 3. A Kind of Magic Queen is a very special band to me since I grew up with it from mid teen until late 20's. I was 15yo when Bohemian Rhapsody was released and became a hit, just started Year 10 in a boys school. I remember during recess Bohemian Rhapsody was one of the songs regularly played on the school speakers around the school in 1976. It was a wonderful memory.

I always look up to Freddie when I feel down, he was so such a powerful performer and seemed like the most caring person ever. The friend we all wanted to have in our life. That was fantastic. This group seemed to carry mulitiple generations as fans. Since I am a GenXer, and Greatest Hits came out the year I turned 12, and got my first stereo, those are the songs I remember. I recall having to get multiple copies of the album on different media. I think the casette version had "Under Pressure" on it, and not the viynl, or maybe it was the other way around. Under Pressure was not only a great song, it was a great video, back when 90% of videos were just filmed performances. I think the video was comprised of shots from the silent movie "Metropolis". It was a huge MTV hit. I would love to see you cover Oingo Boigo. I think since this band was so regional, many people have only heard one or two tracks from their amazing catalog.

Without Freddie and John, it does not have the same feel, closeness, and friendships. They all performed as if brothers from other mothers. Miss the originals, but still have every album!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So hard to pick a favorite, as they were all great in different ways. Maybe Magic as the album and toss up between Breakthru and Under Pressure as song. But also love I Want To Break Free and These are the days.

Thank you for the video. Sometimes I feel bad for the remaining members of the Queen band but then I think by now they are used to it that no matter what they do or say there will always be people who will keep on criticizing them. They are just normal people like us, they just happened to be talented and loves to make music so they made a living out of it. They became successful and a band that no one else can replace in this lifetime. Freddie Mercury must have told them or made them feel that they should carry on with their lives without him. The movie may not be perfect but I’m one of those who enjoyed it and because of this movie, younger people have became aware of them. Have you seen the people who welcomed them in Korea? Younger generation. The movie and tours introduced them to new fans who are probably watching all the RU-vid contents they can find about Queen. Buying albums & merchandise. Let them do whatever they want with their remaining time on earth. If I have a chance I’ll watch their concert even though I know it’s not the same without Freddie. Favorite song. It’s hard to choose one. It changes depending on my mood. Currently on my repeat mode in RU-vid: Jesus, Mustapha Ibrahim, Liar, Cool Cat. When I was down last week I keep on playing Spread Your Wings.

I first heard "Keep Yourself Alive" (aged 12) on the Pirate Radio station - Radio Luxemburg - broadcast to Britain in 1973 and loved it - especially Brian's "galloping guitar", as well as Freddie's great vocals. Two years later, on 16/12/1975, I saw Queen live at Glasgow's Apollo Theatre (for £2.50!), standing in the 7th row from the stage. Saw them live again at the Apollo in 1977 and 1979. Was very fortunate to see them at Knebworth Park, England in 1986 - never thinking that this would be Freddie's last concert with John, Brian & Roger. Attended his Tribute Concert on Easter Monday 20/04/1992 at Wembley Stadium in London. It was ok, but not the same without Freddie. Cheers for this history of my most favourite band EVER! Thank you Matt 👍

Glad you are back! My favourite song by Queen is '39 because i feel that it's such a cute folk song and we should never forget that Bri has also a very good voice! Favourite album A Night At The Opera. Also, thank you for saying those actually kind and true words about the movie! I' ve searched and found out about those mistakes that broke my heart but i'm forever greatful as they made me SUCH a Queen fan. Also as you mentioned David Bowie and given the fact that a new shitty biopic came out about him, please take that into your consideration! But i would love anything you will release so, cheers!

a breifer history of queen… - a guy with a rlly big overbite joins a band - then said band likes each other so they try and make it big - then they make a song abt a king but a woman that murders ppl - so then they’re popular and they decide to write another song that has abt a million beat switches - now the band is rlly popular and then the dude with the big overbite finds out he likes guys - so then the band decides they want to make an anthem song so they do and that song becomes very popular as well - guy with overbite grows mustache - then the band decides they want to make more “80s” type of music so they do - guy with overbite tries to do a solo career and he did decent - so then after more success they decide to peform at some charity concert - 2 yrs after the very good and popular charity concert the guy with the overbite gets sick🥲 - but then he and the band drop 2 more albums that are rlly good - guy with the overbite dies of sickness (jokes aside god rest freddie’s soul) - then the band still does good - the bass guy leaves - then 20 yrs later some dude releases a documentary abt the guy with the overbite and the rest of the band - band is still keeping themselves alive in 2021 THE END
