Linford Christie looks back on his extraordinary career, from the highs of winning Olympic gold to the lows of failing a drugs test after coming out of retirement for one last race.
In the late 80s and 90s, Linford Christie was Britain’s most feted athlete. The only British man to win successive golds at the Olympic Games, World Championships, European Championships and Commonwealth Games, he was as famous as any celebrity in the UK. His sprinting victories united the country in celebration and prompted endless media coverage of his life.
He won 24 medals in a highly decorated decade of dominance and then seemed to disappear off our screens. That might be explained by what happened in 1999, when he briefly came out of retirement to settle a bet with the athletes he was coaching and tested positive for nandrolone.
Now, for the first time, Linford is daring himself to confront the past and consider his legacy.
It's a story told through exclusive interviews with Linford himself, as well as with his family, childhood friends, fellow athletes Sally Gunnell and Jonathan Edwards, the sprinters he trained - Darren Campbell and Katherine Merry - the journalists who followed his spectacular career and even the doping authorities who were there when it ended in drugs test ignominy.
His journey has been far from plain sailing. Linford suffered harassment by the police and sexual objectification by the media in an era of unchecked racism and tabloid power. This is a story about respect and reputation, an allegory about what it takes to be a winner and a cautionary tale of how an illustrious career can be brought low by a single moment.
Twenty-five years after his career closed with a scandal that shocked the nation, this documentary explores what it was like to be the most famous athlete in Britain.

To the people commenting "this isn't racism" Is it only racism if their is a slur used? What if there is a negative racial stereotype used/referenced? Like "all black men are hypersexual brutes?" What if a particular physical feature that is attached to racist tropes is highlighted like the "Mandingo" trope? If something is offensive because of it's tie to race and racist ideology...my friend, it's racist. We don't need new words because the old ones make you feel uncomfortable. This is racist.

Just finished watching the documentry, 38 years old now and I remember watching Linford on that panel with Jimmy Greaves as a young child with my mum and dad, watching that back made me realise how ignorant Greaves was on that programme, frustrating to watch. I went primary aand and secondary school with Linfords first set of children, his twins Liam and Corel Christie. They were in the year about above me, and they knew how much of a big deal their dad was as we always would remind them. Good times. There are so many comments going around saying for Linford to let go and move on. People dont realise that those bad experiences can leave a lifetime of pain within your soul.....

How can commenters act like this was not abhorrent? If it makes my stomach queasy I figure it qualifies as inappropriate. As to whether or not it was racist? I happened to see it in the Sun at the time. It was actually a tiny end piece at the bottom of their editorial column, only perhaps two or three lines, the first line of which was something along the lines of members of the public having been talking about it,so was the expression dreamt up by the journalists or did it come from the public at large and get picked up on? Having never heard the item in question called that before,I was a little bemused by it. I suppose they couldn't resist the alliteration. It wasn't the first time I'd heard the jokes about black men reputedly having larger members that other ethnicities. At one place I worked at in the earliest years of the 90s a word emerged for it,supposedly an African one. I'm not sure I ever saw it written, only heard it spoken,so I may be spelling it incorrectly. Pundar. With the u prounced as in the word "put" for example. Is this a real African word? It may or may not have come from the Ugandan guys there, who were at least as capable as any of bantering everyone else,in which case the language they spoke is Luganda? No-one was getting offended, not least because they had better things to do and bigger fish to fry. Then,in the last couple of months of 1993,so upwards of a year and a quarter of the Barcelona Olympics 100m triumph,I was working, via an agency,at the Christian Salvesen depot on the Wembley Stadium Industrial estate. It was a pretty cosmpolitan workforce. The four-storey bulding had a canteen which served hot dinners. There were a number of young black folk in our group, mostly of West Indian or Caribbean heritage, though there were a couple of Somalis too,and a Ghanaian guy. Amid the banter and winding each other, and sometimes others,up they started referring to a male sexual organ as a Linford. It actually started when someone had a large sausage on their plate and one of them asked mockingly if they were really going to eat "that Linford". They also called the female sexual counterpart a Suzy, which I'd never head before anywhere either. I was never sure whether that too was named after a person in the public spotlight, and if so who? They also introduced words that came presumably from languages or culture they knew but a white British person wouldn't understand. One such that I remmber being used mockingly in one of their to-and-fros was a word that sounded like "doga" and appeared to be a term that was derogatory somehow about someone's sex life, though only they would have known its precise meaning.

I think the disconnect is occuring becsuse the “brushing off” Makes the one side Think its not a big deal .. while the other who “brushed it off” feels like they didnt have an option.. kinda damned if you do or dont…. Like Megan markle was “too sensitive” about the Baby hospital reference to a monkey.. but if she “brushed it off” shed be seen in these terms. Theres no winning .. and also no Way to tell us the truth.. I think a comedian like fluffy should make the pot shot regarding Same record.. track record.. Same spin different day kinda humor.. like a white fan girl “10 things i hate about you “ mendella says “oh good something new and different” The impasse is Because they “brush it off” or play the same track regarding Their points… ends up being two “stero types” playing on repeat until some alters the dance.. and says .. im white.. and I couldnt hear the record of times youve felt that point… over and over.. until i looked at it from white women kat strafford who is a women dtanding up to a “patriarchy society with make shovenists” and others around her Quote her.. because its always where she goes… It would be a funny way to “break the cycle” to have comedians on saturday night live do like will smith and tyra banks moment.. where they have the same argument but where the black person argues the points of the white person.. so the white person can see how much you know their script.. and the black person can see why The white person isnt seeing the problem. The white person is thinking from one time position… the black person is seeing it from ALL THE TIME position.. Think of ig like going to the dentist .. you can tell the dentist a million lies and your mouth will still tell a deep truth about what you eat … and whats left in there.. If you watch things like “save the last dance, 10 things i hate about you, Something new…. You get images that show how often The same scripts and stero types go round.. until Julia shows up and has read Capote.. or Derek isnt a prick who hurts her…. Or She can stand up to snookie and hold her own against Derek depending on the topic.. but in “something new” you can same racism in record and repeat and Segregation by not only Kendra but also educated people who Are challenged by “something new” .. its about unexpected in stereo types or how we present .. if you present as Gabrielle union in “Bring it on” but expect to be seen as Whoopi gold burg in The color purple.. ur two faced. Ur presenting tough and Thick skinned and then wondering why They treat you like ur thick skinned or “get something” If after the “bridh off” you go home to your “real feelings” that the external never saw (and i 100% understand why this is this way.. as a form of not experiencing what megan markle did opening up).. the one .. Feels like its “no big deal “ when realy its One more on top of the other ones. I think in terms if “material” or lines that wrap you or you get wrapped up in.. one liners “he brushed it off” become one after anothef after another til ur In the movie “something new” and brian isnt like others.. but “brushed off”.. And we see Gavrielle union In Bring it.. similarly told to “brush it off” So were saying the same thing but putting up a front to the other in the “brush off” .. unable to hear one another.. it a’mounts the dead horse that is only alive when it goes home to stable eyes.. after being “houndead” .. unwinding the record tale.. For what its worth.. i couldnt hear it until i thought about it trying “something knew” Hope it helps

We can see it is possible through the science nerds, Scifi people who love Chewie or Gobblins.. Thats “out” .. To get someone to turn off the music and stop the program thats projecting onto each others fogs cuz generations back… people got tired of trying, “exhausted” by fumes.. and Started replaying their own histories on the FOGS saying the people be’hind (like gas) the FOGS are evil.. but really nlt recognizing that pretending to be tough ir actuslly having an attitude like Gabrielle union.. or sometimes like whoopi gold (not doggin them.. im talking attitude) berg about issues.. Actually makes more FOGS because the ones on the other side think they are fine and dandy.. when really they feel like the color purple… but project gabrielle union spirit to either maintain or just not give up.. i tend to think its a mixture of the chemical com’pound.. of the issues. Kinda like you look tough to save face.. but saving face is actually making them think they are fine when really they feel beat up and stepped on .. but they lack understanding for why the stories of old are so important.. They Are of people brave enough and tired of being exhausted that they speak truths and cry.. and its the crying and tears that actually show others how bad otto’pilot gets when “out”…. And its not to say they should have to let their guards down.. or Be tge ones who “break through” But .. i keep trying to come over and have real conversations and yeah i say hurtful things in the process trying to figure out how the FOGS over here/hear to someone who loves them but group up in Auto’FOGS.. and says wrong things.. but of i could find people who Wanna talk shop.. and Figure out their exhaust pippes.. so we can turn off the FOGS.. and accept an offering that Isnt perfect.. but really wants to stop the race’sing.. Cuz Its getting thick.. (dense/inpenitra’bull) and I think if someone could hear my bad way of saying something.. they might Decide i have some good inside the Things i dont say the best way.. and use the ideas to Develop a plan for News on tv.. of people who are doing what the people of old did (Mlk’jr, risa parks) in todays world.. and inspire them to think differently by being the brave ones that Get others to want to be brave and do brave acts too…. so i just write them .. basically anywhere i think .. on walls like essay grafitti.. in hopes someone might read one and get a “novel” idea.. to Be how we feel.. and show them the “purple” people not the Ones who Project tough but deep down are rich with History and heritage that maybe the others just arent taking the way you think coming off…. Cuz i know their style and i think they just dont know They are “off” .. i know i dont know why what i say is wrong except i just havent been able to express my way of seeing it good enough for others to hear it.. but each Wall thought bubble i uncover more of my own FEES (fight/entitlement/Ego/Sensoring) that make me more determined to dig deeper like cindy’lou who.. to keep tunneling until i reach someone AT&T Style and get a connection…. So i can be like. Hi .. Im ET… Alien to your people.. let me connect you to my ways… So you can blow them away speak’king their way of hearings (like judgment) .. and maybe get some air conditioning (like breath) to blow away their auto’response’says. And if i say this in an off’fensive way.. if you could tell me how to be less off’fensive.. id really love to shape the present better.. so when i do reach them.. im better..
