How RAF Lost a 19 vs 4 Battle

During the first Arab-Israeli War, Britain remained technically neutral but its forces were still operating over or near their former Palestine protectorate. On 07 January 1949, the last day of the War, four British Spitfires were shot down by Israeli ground forces and fighter planes. They were mistaken for Egyptians who also operated Spitfires, but British reaction to this incident was hard to predict. Israeli Air Force sent a flight of four of their own Spitfires over Rafah while RAF sent a heavily escorted recon flight to search for their missing pilots in the same area. The two formations merged and a fight developed. The leader of the Israeli flight was Ezer Weizman, the country's future president.

Not all the aircraft variants and liveries are 100% historically accurate. Reasons for it are technical. Also, WT doesn't support drop tanks on warbirds (yet) so bombs are used to represent them in some scenes. These are not mistakes and there's no need to 'correct' them. Can't believe you need to clarify this stuff. How come people still don't get that even if you manage to get a sponsor, these channels and their videos are made selflessly along, and during, everyday real life obligations, by guys like you who put a lot of effort to bring good, healthy, unbiased info so we can learn while being entertained. And you're not the only one who needs to be clarifying these things based on software, time, or other kind of annoying limitations. Next time cover some WWI air combat event, use jets to represent the aircraft, and in the video description simply put: "Info is 100% accurate. If you don't like what I could muster to animate it, come do my rl job for me or stfu".

My father flew with 208 sqd during WW2, at the time they were a tactical reconnaissance squadron equipped with Mk 9 Spits with large vertical and oblique cameras. Although they were armed missions, most pilots on the squadron had never taken part in a dog-fight, and I don't suppose it was any different 5 years later. One time my father did get mixed up in a dog-fight in Italy, his wing man had turned back with engine trouble, dad was just about to follow him, when he saw a lot of German troop movement, he called up for allied reinforcements, and two Brazilian Air Force P47 Thunderbolts appeared. As they lined up an attack on the column, they were bounced by two 109s, as the fight developed, my dad discovered that the Brazilians couldn't distinguish a Spitfire from a 109. So he beat a hasty retreat.

Denis Crowley-Milling was Battle of Britain veteran. He was shot down with 242 Squadron on 7.9.40 byl LG 2 or JG 2 pilot.

Great episode. I had no idea the British and Israli's ever fought each other. The text at the end that the RAF hadn't learned anything in 5 years of fighting was a bit harsh but I imagine that most of the leaders found something else to do after the big war. These guys and particularly the leaders were probably newbees.

The RAF had learnt a lot from the war and the for them to say they learnt nothing in 5 years was just them giving mockery and hostile comments and not facts. Israel was a new nation at the time with a newly formed military made up of Jewish members who spent decades dealing with the nazi’s. The Israeli air force had vets wile the RAF had mostly newly trained or late war vets.

I'm pretty sure that their officers told them to continue peacetime safety measures as that the aircraft were not flying a combat mission. (Drop tanks are never dropped in peacetime, they might hit a civilian).

I tend to believe that the Israeli pilots were for the most part highly skilled WWII veterans, where as the UK force might have been commanded by WWII vets, it's core of pilots were young and new to the service. Then from the looks of things the ground crews look like they suffered from the same fairly new to the service issues that the pilots were having to deal with. After WWII ended there was a big draw down by all nations involved, except for maybe the Soviets, my grandfather on my fathers side in the States was released in a wave of draw downs from the US Air Force right after the Korean war ended.

@@timonsolusthe answer is simple. The USAF was bigger than the RAF. They had more numbers on station and the RAF AND the RAF had commonwealth pilots that were folded into those nations air forces post war. The USAF already folded any volunteer pilots it had in foreign air forces during the war.

Ezer Weizman the pilot in question was trained by the Brits during WW2 and spent most it driving trucks in N Africa he only got his wings after the war ended, The other 3 pilots in his formation didn't see much action either. the Canadian volunteer from the previous battle - John McElroy was a WW2 Ace with over 10 kills, the American volunteer - Chalmers Hubert was an experienced pilot he flew in the Canadian AF as well and the US NAVY, he would later become a test pilot for the Bell X-1 Rocket

The British were hamstrung because of higher forces. That’s why they were to fail in this area of operations. It wasn’t pilot skillset. It was by design they leave the Middle East with their tails between their legs. Remember, they put a huge amount of effort to gain control of this region, defeating the Germans, Turks and other regional players in WW1. Then later in WW2, they defeated the Germans once again and the Italians. …only to hand it over to Rothschild’s control. Israel is not what people think it is…Israel has never had a Semite run the state, only Eastern Europeans. That speaks volumes.

These are interesting topics. As for the MiG-23, the module was in development for DCS but that's under question now. MiG-17 is also being developed for the future. Alternatively, it should be possible to do it in WT someday.

Another click bait headline. 19 v 4 didnt result in defeat as the Israelis only shot down one aircraft and one of theirs damaged. The Israelis were looking for a fight wheres the RAF were on a reconnaissance mission and didnt want to fight either side. In fact the 1948 conflict is a stain on Israel as the British were attacked by terrorists from both sides, the Israelis were particularly vicious. All the British wanted to do was to withdraw from the mandate, Palestine was never a colony or part of the British Empire and get the Arabs and Israelis to develop their own country. The USA also caused innumerable suffering with their attempt to disrupt the peaceful transition by flooding Palestine with Jewish refugees. The SS Exodus being one example.

Clarification: It wasn't the US government flooding Palestine with Jewish refugees - the Jews were doing that on their own, though with financial donations from US citizens and pro-Jewish organisations. As for the British, they were flying in Israeli airspace, during a war, from Arab bases, without permission from the Israeli government. It's not surprising that they were treated as hostile.

The British were flying in a war zone, in Israeli airspace, and flying Spitfires, which Israel's Arab enemies were also flying. That's just asking for trouble. Not only that, the British were allies of Egypt and Jordan at the time, and not particularly friendly to Israel.

Israel was under attack by the Egyptians, who were flying Spits (among several other types). Egyptian Spits had been attacking Israeli positions, truck convoys, etc., on the ground in that area. As others have mentioned here, the Israeli pilots could not tell whether a Spitfire was British or Egyptian until they got very close. The Egyptian roundels were a different color than the RAF's, but at a distance a roundel is a roundel. Plus, the Israelis had reason to believe the Brits sided with the Egyptians despite their official neutrality. And moreover, Israel, as a new nation, had to assert their control over their own airspace. Britain flew over Israeli airspace with complete disregard for that. Israel could not permit that. No country can permit that.

You can hardly blame the Israelis considering that despite their claims of neutrality, the British had armed and trained the Arab armies, and a British officer commanded the Jordanian Arab Legion. However justified you think this situation was, the RAF's strategy of flying low-level intelligence flights in a war zone and using identical aircraft to the combatants all while maintaining close military relationships with Arab militaries shows a remarkable lack of foresight. It's as if they were asking for a fight.

@@McFluff33 Who do you think armed, trained and backed the Israelis? This was post war Middle East barely post independence former British colonies. Everyone’s equipment and fighting force was formerly british. Hence why both the Arabs and Israelis were flying Spitfires and using other British equipment and many pilots on both sides were ex-RAF. Clearly they did a good job of being neutral since they got attacked by both sides and both sides accused them of bias towards the other. It was just a messy situation they were trying to leave in an orderly fashion. If the RAF in the region had gotten their way they would’ve wiped out both fledging airforces as retribution for their intentional attacks. At the end of the day both sides knew they were there, both sides had veteran pilots were formerly RAF, not recognising the RAF roundel is hard to believe. It’s weird, them wanting to kill their ex comrades. Plus in the end the memoirs show that the Israeli pilots extended an olive branch and apologised for their actions against the RAF squadron since they probably knew some of them personally. Something I don’t think they would’ve done if they had believed their own justification.

With a piece of crap Avia fighters, Me109G but with Jumo engines, but better than nothing and Spits of ex Czech RAF squadrons LF variant of IX probably? I´m not sure. We helped israelis even after the communist 1948 February coup, at least for a while. Some of the flying instructors were ex RAF members.

To some extent. There are many of the aircraft used in those conflicts in War Thunder so that part is not an issue. Maps are a bit more of an issue since they are quite limited in that game. The 1956 Suez Crisis is something I plan to cover to some extent.

They didn't learn anything because they were a neutral nation. They didn't have to learn anything, their aircrafts shouldn't have been engaged by Israeli fighters. They were just doing observation and reconnaissance over territories that were previously theirs. They weren't there to fight anyone, the Israeli just took the lives and airplanes of young pilots that were not a threat. They should take responsibility for that.

@@krautroach514 The USAF attacked a New Zealand warship during the Vietnam War. The NZ ship tried every form of ID they could, but the US pilots continued to press the attack home. When they started taking battle damage & injuries, the Kiwis decided "it wasn't fun anymore", & fired back. Only then did the Americans realise their mistake.

The british have made a tecnical mistake but their place was unconfortable between the opponents. For being neutral, you have not to be on the field of the battle, your weapon is your language, it's the diplomacy. It's useless to be under fire and try to obtain the peace in the same time.

They weren't exactly unarmed, it was only the ground crew error because of which some Tempests couldn't fire. But it's true that they were way too casual about flying in a war zone.

@@bjornsmith9431 : I wouldn't call it carelessness. It's more likely to be due to the ground crews not being told to discontinue peacetime safety procedures, and not being told that the aircraft might get into a combat situation.
