How’s it going disruptors and force users of the RU-vid community! I'm back with my first video essay of 2023! This week, we're focusing on everyone's favourite director, Rian Johnson, where I'm going to explain how watching GLASS ONION helped me fully appreciate Supreme Leader Snoke as a villain from the STAR WARS franchise... this was a fun one to make, so I hope you all enjoy it!

This is a really great video and it puts into word something I've wanted to wrap my head around. Snoke only mattered because Snoke believed he mattered. But he's shallow, nothing but a shadow of something far greater. He was a cardboard cut-out with an evil laugh, and him dying was a fantastic choice to not only play with those themes of being knockoffs (like with Kylo Ren and Vader in TFA), but to progress Kylo as a character with agency too. There are dozens of us! Dozens!

The dozens of us will continue to speak out about the simplicity of Snoke!!! Seriously though, love your take on Snoke here, especially the line "Snoke only mattered because Snoke believed he mattered." That is my exact thought-line in a nutshell...

Great video! You keep saying "we're going to ignore The Rise of Skywalker", but this idea is perfectly in line with a genetically engineered being (he's not just a clone) with memories and an identity likely created by Palpatine or the cultists working for him. He's not being controlled by Palpatine, but Snoke acts like someone imprinted to carry out Palpatine's plan.

Exactly! This idea works with Episode 9.

I always theorized since the moment he appeared in the Force Awakens that Snoke was nothing more than a puppet in a greater plan. Whereas Darth Sidious was much more subtle in terms of manipulation, Snoke was so much less subtle. Look at the golden robe, the big red curtain, and the way he so casually uses force lightning to hurt Kylo Ren, and his utterly overt vicious remarks towards him. I have a feeling that he probably was tricked more easily just because he was indulging in his ego. Darth Sidious probably knew EXACTLY what he was doing when he created Snoke. A puppet to be used so that he could cast aside to make the route for his own return easier.

I’ve never agree with creative decisions done TLJ, but I’ve always loved your perspective on the film and your views on cinema. Great video, Nick!

Snoke wasn’t Palpatine he was just created by and working for him and that actually works even better with your take. Snoke is a wannabe, he’s insecure because despite having all the power he has, he knows he is simply the creation - the property - of the one true Emperor.

Thanks for a great video. I enjoy writing Snoke as a failed padawan that tried to become a Sith just as the last Sith were destroyed (no 'Palpatine returned' for me), and then grew his power on the rage and hate of the Skywalkers. Sometimes I write him as a surviving Inquisitor, and/or a turned Jedi Temple guardian.

Oh damn that’s a great headcanon!! Having Snoke be a former Jedi would be such a cool story beat!

I'm curious, because I hate Rian Johnson for Episode VIII and have boycotted anything he touches, and Snoke was one of the reasons. So I am on the other side of the fence right now, but haven't watched your video yet.

Well, it's the best take I've heard, you made your case and the logic holds up. Not my favorite villain archetype. I'm curious if you have done a video about what Rian Johnson did to Luke in Episode VIII?
@NickPoulimenakos

@@deltablaze77 I appreciate the kind words, and thanks for keeping an open mind about this! I touched upon Johnson's take on Luke in the third video published on my channel. I connect Luke's appearance in MANDO season 2 to how he is in TLJ... if you're up for it, check it out! I do plan to do a full deep dive into TLJ Luke one day... spoiler though, I really like Luke's story in it.

Kylo only took him out when he had someone to have his back. There are no layers because Johnson didn't want to give him those layers. He wanted to subvert expectations at any cost, and Snoke, among numerous other things, was part of the cost. It wasn't shocking as much as it was just a lame rug pull. It's all so poorly setup and unearned that it just feels like a constant gotcha on not just what fans expected, but what actually makes sense. That's the best way to sum it up. There are so many nonsensical holes in the movie that Lucasfilm is still writing bits into shows, games and comics to explain them away, yet people want to defend the film. I've always said you can LOVE the movie, but you can't really defend that it was a was a good movie. I love plenty of bad movies, but I'll admit they were bad. Game of Thrones needed two full seasons to work in as many nonsensical, unearned plot twists as TLJ was able to squeeze into two hours!
