A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones Author George R. R. Martin Interview on the Battle of the Trident that took place during Robert's Rebellion. The battle was won when Robert Baratheon defeated Rhaegar Targaryen
@@tybo8873 even valerian steel doesn't easily cut through plate armor. there was a reason most knights had maces or hammers in the lazer stages of the middle ages
@@XpVersusVista swords were just as, if not even more prevalent than hammers in the later periods. Hammers are great, but there's plenty of ways of efectively using a sword on horseback against armor, and they have a significant number of advantages over hammers.
Oh I see well y’all probably know more than I do about this lore so thank you for educating me on the lore. I’m not being sarcastic I’m actually think it’s cool
@@mihajlodjordjevic2978 i Read that somewhere apparently it's true But when talks of prequels and spin offs began Grrm said word for word, he didn't want to adapt Robert's rebellion cause all the secrets of Robert's rebellion will be disclosed in asoiaf, so it would be a big spoiler He also said he didn't want them to adapt dunk and egg cause he wants to finish that story first But now hbo seems to hint at adapting both down the line 🤔
@@TheGamebuzzHD Robert’s rebellion will certainly end adapted, the money a blockbuster film or box set will make is simply too much for HBO to turn down. I reckon seeing more bobby b is enough to make it as big a draw as any other spinoff. ADOD included.
The way Robert is described in his prime reminds me of those sports stars who peak too early due to a freakish combination of raw physicality, talent, and sheer desire but then burn out and lose it all to poor discipline and vice.
i love how as they're looking at this beautiful image, GRRM makes a point of mentioning the name of the artist and going on to compliment his work in general. class act
@@ThomasFoolery8 I mean yeah but what is the point? Not everything has to be shown, that's kinda the magic of the show/books, there's so many stories that has been told as a legend, mith or historical event, and so like the characters we have to imagine those stories. If everything is becoming a series, spin off and so on, i don't know, in my opinion it's not necessary
Robert in his prime was scary, known as the “Demon of the Trident”, had the strength of the Mountain but the speed of Oberyn Martell. Not many could match him if any.
Plus the warhammer is a really scary weapon, any kind of injury you cause is incredibly serious, you either kill or maim and finish it after, there is 0 room for error against these kind of weapons, and you need to dodge there is no blocking nor parrying a war hammer blow from Robert
@@alexeiharp7676 he managed to beat him as a commander army vs army, in 1 on 1 only Ser Barristan Selmy would have good chances against Robert. Selmy 100% wins if you give him a Valyrian steel sword. GRRM has said himself, that if you give Selmy a Valyrian steel sword, the tiny gap between him and Ser Arthur Dayne closes and they are equal with Dayne wielding Dawn, the sword is what gives him an edge vs Selmy.
Robert’s rebellion should be made in movies...either a trilogy or just a bunch of movies like Harry Potter....but the history behind this event is AMAZING
Favorite thing about asoiaf lore is that events that happened before the books start are still as detailed as events that are fully written. We pretty much find out everything about the whole rebellion
You know I can't get enough of George RR Martin he's absolutely amazing he's the type of person you wanna hang out with and you'd be able to have a fantastic conversation with
Gotta love that not only did Robert fight with a war hammer in the age of swords, but he did it on horseback, single handed lol. Standing up in the stirrups to boot.
I always wonder how that fought went down.. Swing for swing. I thought if they were both on horseback Prince Rhaegar had the upper hand as a skilled knight, yet Robert's true love was violence and Prince Rhaegar hated it. But from the descriptions in the books he is about 6'6 and probably 275-300 lbs of muscle, like a defensive lineman; Rhaegar was more sleek and shorter by 3 or 4 inches. Even a one handed war hammer is going to be swung pretty damn hard by a Khalil Mack of the Westerosi variety..
Same I'd like to think also that with them getting off their horses and fighting in the mud and muck of the Trident sludging over corpses and in the end Robert's inhumane Strength wpn out and he just crushed Rhaegar and probably mutilated the guys body.
@@Argos-xb8ek I don’t think they ever got off their horses. They fought entirely on horseback IIRC. Rhaeghar did follow Robert into the Trident, and Martin has stated Rhaeghar was more skilled on horseback. I think the implication there is that it was a mistake for Rhaeghar to go into the water, where his superior riding skills would be nullified. Also it was a close fight and Robert was seriously injured, which is why Ned had to go to King’s Landing ahead of him.
Technically, I think he's referring specifically to Cannibal, which is the one dragon in the lore without a canonical demise... Cannibal was a wild dragon that lived on Dragonstone, smaller than Balerion but larger than any other dragon alive during the Dance, it was completely un-tamable and had a possibly fictitious reputation for preferring to eat other younger dragons and eggs above all other food sources (hence the name Cannibal). In Fire & Blood / A World of Ice and Fire, all of the Targaryen dragons are accounted for, except Cannibal, who flies away from Dragonstone and is never seen again. Is it possible that Cannibal flew north of the wall and got iced by the Walkers? Sure, entirely. But it's equally possible that Cannibal ended up flying off to Skagos, the island of cannibals, and has been living there worshiped as a deity by the comparatively primitive locals who offer sacrifices to the dragon. I only bring this up because a known warg with a wild temperment is currently thought to be in hiding on Skagos, and I just really want to see 5-year-old Rickon ride an angry dragon and fuck shit up. Either that, or Rickon's entire story line is a fucking pointless waste of time and will end with a stupid pun or something, making everything about Rickon Stark and his direwolf one giant... Shaggy Dog story.
The irony of Robert being the one to overthrow the Targaryens is that the Baratheons are only landed nobles at all because they were one of Aegon's early allies in the conquest.
Except that it wasn't really Robert. It was more Ned and Jon Arryn. Ned just didn't have the desire to sit on the throne, so they defaulted to Robert who also has some Targ blood from that ancestral relationship. Even in the midst of a coup they were defaulting to whomever had the closest bloodline to the Targs. Robert lies to himself about doing it for Lyanna, but he really just liked fighting. He was like MJ just looking for slights to fuel him.
Actually, the Baratheons started out with Aegon's bastard brother, Orys. The Durrandons were the ruling house of the Stormlands. After the conquest, Aegon married Orys to the former Durrandon king's only daughter and Orys took the Durrandon coat of arms (the black stag as we know it) and founded the Baratheon house.
@@OfficialPizza yeah it is a rumour, but you know how the saying goes, where there's smoke there's fire. Also my bad, I misinterpreted your initial post. Atleast I included some extra info I guess lol.
Robert in his prime could probably have beaten Gregor Clegane. He was strong and trained daily with one of the most effective weapons against knights in plate armor. Also he had pure rage and adrenaline driving him-Rhaegar may have wounded him but Robert probably barely felt the wounds until after it was over. Furthermore Rhaegar had never truly seen war and probably had the overconfidence in prophecy driving him to face Robert alone. Rhaegar stood no chance of prevailing once Robert drew him into this situation.
@@htut80 oh I know, I'm not endorsing that either. But if I had a nickel for every comment I read saying something like "omg can't wait to see the dragons omg" I'd have like a lot of nickels.
RR, please never die, and never stop writing. I really wish you could write 100.000.000 books and they could make 100.000.000 TV shows about them. Best writer of our time next to Tolkien.
I like how he knows the artwork of his writing so well as well as the creators. Also really like how he confirms that Bobby and RheaRhea were on horses when they fought.
The most amazing story of all time and the main charicter the hero the main man was dead before the story even began and never made an appearance .....incredible
How is he the main man? Is this a cliche or what? Have seen this comment a hundred times. Tell me how is rhaegar the main man? Did you even read the books? Calling rhaegar the main man when there are dany jon tyrion and bran is absolutely ridiculous
@@darkseidistheboss5781 rhaegar is the usual fantasy hero. Princely, handsome, a prodigy. Lyanna herself, imo, is much the same. Martin was playing with tropes and his play led him to explore what would happen if the heroes died? She loved rhaegar. Robert and her had no love because it was a betrothal and she knew Robert as a philanderer. It was all in roberts head, he couldn't accept her not wanting him.
@@asymbolofpurehatred What do you mean no one gives a shit about him? Fans bring him up a lot, he’s very popular for someone who is never on screen in the books. And Jaime thinks of him, he was Jaime’s hero.
I hope one day HBO will do a mini series leading to the events of the Game of Thrones based on Robert's Rebellion. Oh my god i love that particular event building up to the main series.
We have to see the battle of the trident on the big screen or the little screen. And we got to see Ned in the middle of battle looking for Arthur Dayne
Man they really should make like a 1 season or 2 season show adapting Robert’s rebellion it would have a young strong Viking like Robert with his warhammer, Ned, Jamie it would be epic seeing young Robert ride into battle and obliterate his enemies, and it’s such a great story as well
I think the reason most artist don’t included horses is because of Roberts story on the battle he states that his horse fell in battle and he was on foot.
well also bobby Bs weapon is a big fuckin hammer which would be an aweful weapon to use on horseback unless it was one of them smaller one handed ones.
I wish they could just make a show out of roberts rebellion. it'd tie into game of thrones nicely even if we already know the fate and direction of the show it'd be cool to see everything go down. it'd be a magnificant sight to see robert and ned in there prime fighting wars instead of sitting on thrones and drinking wine
and this is why in CKII as Aegon...you always make Dragonstone your capital and dont burn Harrenhal during the conquest...instead use Harrenhal as your mainland stronghold and keep your dragons massive living around the Dragonmont which was the entire reason the Targaryens settled Dragonstone
I love that the battle of the tridant is based on the battle of Bannockburn, and Robert killing Rhaegar is directly based on Robert the Bruce killing Sir Henry De Bohun.
@@vega21 I don’t think so cause there aren’t as much details. Like look at house of dragons, shit is way longer than Robert’s rebellion story but it would only be 5 seasons or less
For a few years there GRRM must have had crazy fun having the whole world join in his fantasy creations and take them so seriously. Now that the craze has mostly passed I wonder if he can get back to it, or if it's totally deflated his interest.
@Patrick Höing i prefer for the series to not be finished and to be left ot our imagination rather than to get a shit rushed ennding with no value. maybe he will never finish it. but even so id rather he wont finish it rather than ruin it
@Patrick Höing thats the thing. They didnt have to make the show in 6 episodes.... hbo offered them 13 seasons with a blank check and grrm said that at least 11 seasons needed to be done to tell the story througly with the material that was already out. D&D rushed the writing since they wanted to switch to star wars and we got a shit ending because of it. So id rather for grrm to take his time and get us quality content then realese it quickly and for it to be a dissapointment. And if he doesnt finish it... than its a shame, but at least it wasnt ruined like the tv show.
I'd love to have a show set during this era, even if it was just one season, just all-out-war, plus we'd get to see more Ned Stark and see Robert Baratheon in his prime. Though who knows, perhaps House of the Dragon, if it gets more seasons, will end during the Rebellion. Could be cool.
In deep geek is the best asoiaf youtuber and has a playlist on all the reasons leading up to the rebellion. I would highly recommend it for a deeper insight as to why this happened. But in short the tourney at harrenhal, and if in doubt blame blood raven
I hope one day to see a screen adaptation of this. We all know how it starts and ends but it dosnt matter. Would also love to see the 3 battles at summer hall and the siege of storms end. Would be cool to see a young Stannis the mannis.
@@jacobaurelius5361 (💜 your pic) poking fun at Robert for how he was 'past his prime' and George interjected with how Robert was based off him somewhat "yeah, kinda like me...(sitting right beside you,)"
@@staytuned2L337 yeah that's exactly it. She even added that perhaps that's why people thought so highly of him As if being the king of the seven kingdoms and the one who ended the targyrian dynasty plus personal relations to houses stark and lannister, all count for nothing If you're not skinny
@Riad Azira I think you didn't get what he meant. the younger and skinnier G R Martin would not have been sitting in that chair with people thinking highly of him
people often discount Robert's power, to put it into perspective, Rhaegar was a seasoned fighter, almost equal to the likes of Arthur Dayne, Barriston Selmy, Gerold HIghtower etc. Robert killed him with one strike, dead before he hit the ground. Robert Baratheon Prime, was easily the best fighter of his time, likes of The Hound, The mountain , Khal Drogo etc. would not have stood a chance.
Robert's only advantage was the hard long hammer blow, Robert baratheon was a great Warrior but rhaegar was easily the better fighter. In war the best fighter doesn't necessarily always win the battle like Jaimie lannister Arthur dwayne.
He wasn’t a season fighter cause Rhaegar didn’t even like violence , he spent his time singing etc , Robert was a beast don’t get me wrong but he wasn’t better than Arthur or Selmy
Robert didn't kill Rhaegar with a single strike nor did he defeat the prince easily. He was so injured after their duel that he could not continue forwards to King's Landing to claim the throne.
