Watching the channel it feels like Robert Burns has returned to Scotland in the person of sir Fumey.

I am hooked. I have went through about 10 videos today and more last night. Someone linked you on reddit and what a find. I have found out more about Scottish history in the last 36 hours than I have ever done. What is great for me was I worked in a Prebyterian school in Korea in 2013-2014 and I spent my Monday morning sermons with a 2 day hangover from the Saturday night listening to some random jibberish about god in Korean. Turns out a lot of these sermons was about Scotland. My pupils were extremely enquisitive and many have visited here since.

Just found the channel through the RU-vid algorithm and its great , I live near Aberdeen and have always had a love for the history of this country and in general so its right up my street keep it up mate

There where a few sermons in my local church in 2014 (remember that time period?) preaching against independence. The memory of Bruce and Wishart surely lost to whoever penned those sermons.

Have learnt so much so far about Scotland. I'm enjoying the channel.

Thank you for the extra effort of providing subtitles. the earlier videos, which depended on RU-vid to provide instant captions, were, at best, challenging. The algorithms (no, not the tempo provided by Al Gore) were totally flummoxed at times by the slight accent you occasionally display. Good on ye, lad!

I was kind of bummed that Wishart doesn't have a memorial marking his tomb in the Cathedral. It's just kind of there. In my opinion, it was a big deal to thumb your nose at Rome. It sort of set a precedent that people like Knox would follow.

The question I have I is this. The church of Scotland was completely Roman Catholic at the point of the wars of Scottish independence, so how can that be used as the reason for the bishops behaviours? The desperate scramble to protect the Scottish church against either of the home grown claimants seems the more likely reasoning.

hi Bruce great video, why would I expect anything else. From my reading the Normans brought a direct rule from Rome. The Irish and Scottish churches were called the sisters of Rome ,as they had developed their own Christian church independently. The Welsh church was not liked by Rome as they claimed that Christianity arrived in Britain in the first century rivalling Rome as the first church. Constantine had spent time in Britain before becoming Emperor and making Christianity the official religion of the Empire?. Henry invaded Ireland and the Celtic church was supplanted by the English church. He had problems with the Welsh. His son Edward[boo] went on crusade which was unsuccessful but on the way home he stopped in Genoa? . He then returned to England with 10,000 men from the continent. Edward defeated the Welsh , and then had the Welsh language banned as the Welsh church was oral. The Scottish church wanted to keep its independence and wanted to be able to appoint their own bishops, when the time came they backed Robert Bruce . After Bannockburn , the crown of Ireland was offered to Robert Bruce who refused and it was then offered to Edward Bruce by the remnants of the irish nobility and Celtic church ,who accepted . Edward was defeated and slain in battle against the English , the last Celtic King of Ireland?. When we look at Bannockburn there were not just English knights but some from abroad all with the blessing of the Pope, it would appear that having been thrown out of the holy land ,the church then turned on those who were slightly different, the Cathars and the Templars . it would appear that through the centuries the Scots ,Picts have fought against the power of Rome whether it comes wielding a sword or wearing religious garments . Bede born 673AD, died 735AD was mostly well known south of the boarder as the author of the book, The Ecclesiastical History of the British People or to give its latin name Historium Ecclesiasticam Nostrae Insulae Ac Gentis In Libris... And his works are still studied to this day....

Always follow the money (or power)

I've always been curious---why does "the" appear between Robert & Bruce? // I've never set foot on Scottish soil (no$$ for it), but it holds a deep pull in me. My middle name was McClaugherty, & as I understand it, my people on my mother's side hopped down to the Isle of Skye & then to Northern Ireland ( which holds no pull for me). As a back family fellow recants our heritage, the McClaughertys were a sub clan under the MacDonalds. My father's background is unknown to me, for I was sired by a Jewish man, were deceased before I got this great desire to know from where I came, which I didn't know until both the man I considered Daddy & the Jew and my mother died.

The Bruce turns out to be my 23rd great GranDad. The line going back is tortuous with descent passing down through both males and females begetting the next in line to me. This is well researched by me and I will make no claim on Scotland but, I think it might be factual.

We Wisharts can trace their ancestry in Scotland back over 800 years.There is still some debate how we got there originally. "Guischards" are a Norman family. However it is sure that Bishop Robert Wishart was appointed one of the Guardians of Scotland who made the mistake of inviting Edward The First to decide on a new King. He was " legged over" and we Wisharts whose DNA is extremely straight "never forget" a wrong and I think this reflects on Bishop's Wishart.s behaviour afterwards. He counselled Wallace and Bruce but sadly the "Warrior Bishop's" impact has never been properly recognised. A fact that was pointed out by family historian David Wishart when we visited Bannockburn in 2014 for a Family Gathering. "Outlaw King" does not recognise this neither does "Bruce" . Without being absolved from killing the Comyn on Holy Ground Bruce could never have raised an army as his followers would have been condemned to "hell and damnation". He took a big risk and has legend has it the Bruce was crowned At Scone in the Bishop' s robes and afterwards Edward the first was forever complaining to the Pope about him. Taken in battle as a hostage he was eventually released blind and frail after Bannockburn. 300 years later George Wishart also stood for what he saw was right and was martyred for his beliefs in St Andrews. As a family who lives in the "shadows" we are still trying to make sure that the best happens for Scotland!!

King Robert The Bruce was my 21X great granduncle on my dad's side, the man he killed, John "The Red" Comyn", was my 21X great grandfather on my mom's side., so you cab see that family disfunction goes way back.

Great job but you got Bede wrong. He told the truth. Remember that he could have lost a hand for writing a false document! He managed to keep his limbs intact. The reason why modern historians don't like Bede is because Bede correctly points out that the Saxons are a distinct people from the Celts. Mic Drop.
