John D. Rockefeller reached the wealth of kings without using a sword or ruling a nation. He was a private citizen who through his own conviction and ruthlessness created an empire we'll never see again. How did he build it?

@Supadupa Swaggascoopa Given that the majority of territorial conquests were intrapolitical, such as tribes within the same nation or empire taking over smaller tribes, or Nobles taking down other nobles, usually with in the same kingdom... Given that corporate takeovers were indeed taking lands from communities on just as large as scale as most cases of kingdoms outright conquering other kingdoms. Given people's communities and livelihoods being upended definitely had a huge fucking impact on their identity, perhaps a much larger impact than keeping the same nationality but having a change of government did. Your appeal to the little guy on these grounds rings VERY FUCKING HOLLOW; especially, when you consider that corporations taking over lands got to perform MANY OF THE SAME ATROCITIES as occupying armies would only they could do it to "their own countrymen" and not be accused of war crimes and still often manage to work a few rapes into the process. "Oh no one's forcing you to sell. They're just discontinuing all local utilites and shuttering every local business that's necessary to actually sustain life in your area." Hey in the case of a foreign conquest, after they're raping and pillaging you at least got a shot rebuilding an reorganizing your community most of the time. In corporate takeover your whole fucking county can get spread to the 4 winds and the subsequent poverty and suicide rates make a good old fashoined sacking and enslaving look downright merciful by comparison. Don't fucking kid yourself. What companies do to communities on a semi-regular basis actually ticks overs half the boxes on the U.N. definition of things that are considered genocide. And if you honestly don't grasp that corporations are fundamentally reshaping nations and cultures, basically causing people to rewrite their identities on fundamental levels, then you *really don't understand a DAMNED THING about what's been going on right in plain fucking sight since the dawn of civilization.* Nah! Just go ahead and stew in your moral superiority if you want.

Before the invasion of Iraq, the oil drilled there was used to fuel one of the largest militaries in the world. Which was controlled by a dictatorship and was, at multiple occations, used to invade other countries and conduct genocide. It is now drilled by private companies, compeeting in the free market, and the tax revenue is used to fund its democratically elected government.

you just summed up the problem with capitalism... thanks. one persone just doing what is smart... what hes supposed to do... basically collapsing the system to a point where the state has no other option but to break him down to ensure a democracy does not turn into an oligarchy.... btw. obviously that plan failed. otherwise you would not have to be a billionaire to run for president.

Mansa musa's wealth is heavily disputed, whilst some might cite him as the richest person to ever live, it is probable that his wealth is somewhat overestimated. Augustus's wealth comes mainly from the fact that he technically personally owned Egypt. but to cite Egypt's entire economy at the time as his personal wealth is not reasonable imho. Crassus I think has a better claim to being the richest Roman ever, a his wealth was owned by him directly. Also Jakob Fugger deserves a mention, as he may also have been richer then Rockefeller.

The two older boys were able to help their dad work and stay in whatever temporary housing they had, I'm not sure where. But my Great-Grandfather was too young and had no where to go. So John D. Rockefeller's wife, Laura, took my Great-Grandfather in and cared for him. He was raised alongside John D. Rockefeller Jr for several years, apparently the two were like brothers. No one is exactly sure what happened afterwards, those details were lost to time. My Grandma has told me this story many times, it's very cool to me. I'm surprised about the amount of history my mother's side of the family has in Ohio, we've been here since the early 1800's and haven't really left. Meanwhile my dad's side just kinda plopped here one day.

this system is also known as vertical integration where one company for example a car company controls all production, like making every part themselves, and reassembling every part themselves. it is the opposite of outsourcing where instead a car company owning part production and assembling, they would but the parts and assemble them, or make the parts and sell it to be assembled.

The funny thing is the Sherman Anti-trust act actually (for a while) gave more power to guys like Rockefeller. A trust is specifically a group that controls multiple "companies" to create non-competition. The problem is it wasn't so obvious what is and what isn't considered a trust since you can argue anything that isn't exactly 100% of the market isn't one. The great thing about Sherman is it didn't say this only applied for large corporations, so they went after other groups the were creating non-competition... like worker's unions. Since unions were pretty much non-competition organizations (at least in the corporation's eyes) they went after and, they being less experienced in legal matters like such, were easily beaten in court by Rockefeller.

Prices for Kerosene were 58 cent a gallon in 1865 when Standard Oils was minuscule 20 years later they were 8 cents a gallon. Evil? I wish oil companies today were that evil. My point is Monopolies are only Monopolies if they can provide a good or service cheaper then any one else. That is unless the gov't restricts competition through rules and regulations.
@chriskramer1323
@chriskramer1323 7 лет назад
123chargeit you don't understand a monopoly. When they lower the prices they bankrup or buyout competetion. When the competetion is gone the prices skyrock and the service is gettinh poorer since they dont have to compete. If a competitor comes again they Will buyout or bankrup Them and raise the prices again, in the end nobody Will even bother trying to compete and the monopolist Can charge whatever they want without fearing consequenses, this is especially true if Their product is essential for society
@123chargeit
@123chargeit 7 лет назад
And yet it didn't. Kerosene did not increase for decades (which was caused by inflation). The same thing happened in Steel with Andrew Carnegie. Your acting like other people are not greedy themselves and will not compete with someone because of "fear" of being bought out or forced out. There is always someone that will enter a field when they feel they can make a profit in it. Hell people become drug dealers after other drug dealers literally gun there competition down in the street. Your concerns are theoretical and not backed up by history. I understand a monopoly better then you it would seem.

Now we all have a computer in our pockets that runs an OS (Android) created by a company that wasn't even around when I was in High School (just turned 30). Competition will always knock monopolies down when they get top heavy.

The technological advancements that "lower prices" are at best byproducts of monopolization. They're in fact usually what causes monopolization as the business that utilizes the superior tech will destroy the competition before said competition can access that same tech. Rockefeller was a monopolist that didn't even rely on advanced tech. as his production costs were practically the same as other oil producers at the time. It was the unfair practices like control of the rail and pipe transports, control of media, bribery of legislators, and undermining of competitor staff that made him successful. He would cut prices in the regions where his competitors were supplying while maintaining significantly higher prices where competitors weren't a threat. Entering the market under these conditions caused consistent bankruptcy. Monopolies are characterized by market control and making the most profit out of all available suppliers. This is most often accomplished by minimal pay towards labor, but there are other unjust methods as evidenced by Rockefeller. (and it's debatable whether or not Rockefeller payed his workers "fair wages", as unbiased primary sources are seemingly nonexistent.) Your ideas are dredged in baseless heroification and a non-understanding of economics.

What I think, is that whatever that guy did was his own wish after his success., After all he was the champ at those days guys, and we all know that with earnings, comes the evil. So maybe the guy was a little bad when he got rich., But according to the video, I think, he was good at heart. @Teringventje communism? China? You must not had heard of revisionism. It's a term to when a former socialist nation reverts to capitalism in one way or another. Like with Gorbachev in the Soviet Union or in China. And recently Cuba. It's usually a change in leadership that starts the shift back to capitalism. As around the time Castro died Cuba legalized business again. Meaning Cuba was no longer socialist. Also, what the hell is a "resource based economy" that's what every economy is. If you want some examples of times socialism helped to improve a nation. Research Cuba and Burkina Faso. The life expectancy of Cubans skyrocketed and in Burkina Faso, a once starving nation with French influence turned into one with a surplus of food.

Basically, Rockefeller was one of the best things to happen to the United States, both for industry and for the middle/lower classes. The decrease in oil price created by his business was a huge boon for the industrial sector, and also improved quality of life for everyone else by making kerosene affordable when once it was not. Rockefeller is one of the prime examples of how capitalism, while ruthless for those competing, leads to an overall increase in quality of life for the whole of society.

Don’t say that they were smarter than everyone else, or worked harder than everyone else, it could be that they had more luck, or they just had the perfect unplanned timing. Now imagine the affect it has on the public, having such a big monopoly means they fully control their prices. If that’s the case then they can make you pay a hell lot for something that shouldn’t be expensive. Also just imagine how easy it could be for such a company to swallow other companies in other domains and keep going until what, they own everything? That’s just insanely bad for everyone except leaders of the business. Plus bribing politicians, when is that good? Never... The conclusion is a little underwhelming. Your argument appears to be that in contrast to common conceptions of Rockefeller as a greedy capitalist , he was in fact a philanthropist and social progressive. But it seems disingenuous to highlight his ethics in social causes while downplaying his business ethics (or lack thereof) by simply saying it's 'just business'. Unless you sincerely believe that business practice and ethics have no overlap, a more nuanced approach to Rockefeller's moral character is necessary. Great video, though. Very clear and informative.
