that second rubber is supposed to be loaded also together with the roller rubber. in Europe we call it a booster and its being used on rollers because they have a slow start speed of the shaft so you need a regular band to get maximum speed of the shaft right away when it exits the muzzle.
your slightly wrong about the reason for less recoil , 24 years as a gunsmith, the main reason on that particular gun is the fact that you have rubber flying backwards underneath same time as you have rubber and spear going forward on top so they cancel each other out , like the reverse cross bow designs of recent years, mass helps but not as much as countering the rearward recoil with a forward recoil , some fixed firing pin machine guns have the same system of cancelling one recoil out with another or the use of directed gas or springs etc.
i never said it was cancelling the felt or actual recoil i said it was diminished due to the opposite action of the band, don,t forget the band is moving rearward before the spear has overcome inertia to move forward , so the initial, although be it small, movement of the entire gun would be forward or at least stationary until the inertia has been overcome , but we are talking milliseconds so its just semantics at this point , still nice to have an intelligent polite conversation on you tube for a change thanks .
Thinking about transitioning to a roller speargun. Watched your video to learn more and noticed the shirt. I approve (it’s me on the shirt)! Never did pick one up... gotta find me one!
Hi Andrew! Very nice videos you have on Nautilus Spearfishing!! I saw that you pay very much attention in showing people how to do things right! And you are very good at it!! Having this in mind I would like to inform you on the recoil of a roller gun since you "seem" not very sure about it! As far as the recoil of a roller gun is concerned, is true much smaller than ordinary guns. In fact is 25%less. This is because at the "loaded" state, half of the band is on the top side of the gun and the other half is on the bottom side. At the "after shot" state, the full length of the band is on the bottom side. By doing some simple maths, it turns out the above result. So, as you mentioned in the video, less recoil means better accuracy. A good roller gun is capable of very tight accuracy at long range. But roller guns have a drawback too, as always is the case! They usually shoot downwards in more than 3 times the length of the shaft. The rollers themselves can produce unstable shot, along with overstreched bands and make it completely useless. But if you maintain good quality bands suitable for roller guns and hard straight shaft, you will forget everything else when power is a concern! Guaranteed!! Keep on the good work and keep diving! Regards, Ilias Pardalis
You guys are awesome! You should make a video of your store, like where it is, what type of merchandise you have, see the staff all the cool stuff you guys have.
One more great explanation. Thank you. So when hunting only with the main roller band the extra band stays lose on the gun? It would block sight? It can stuck on shark tail of the spear during a shot, I think it is dangerous to hunt with a lose band moving on the top of the gun.
Very good explanation, now I understand how they work. I have a question, but for a 100cm regular 2 banded speargun, this is the first time I ever own a band gun, would you mind giving me tips on how to practice loading the gun? I have a 100cm beuchat marlin Oceania
In theory would a rollergun be more powerful if you looped the rubber back on itself twice instead of once so that there would be three layers instead of two? Thanks
The opposing forces of the bands going down the gun over the top and through the rollers and finally getting pulled under the gun towards the handle will cancel each other out.
I'm totally new to this. Can someone give me some advice.. When you shoot a fish, is the there line attached to the spear which is attached to your gun ?, I've seen some videos where people shoot the fish then the line is attached to a buoy... I want to buy a speargun which has the line attached to the gun. What type are they called ?, or are the buoy attachment ones just normal ones with that feature added ?
No guns yet, should have some on soon. This gun is for sale but only through cal or email right now. Let me know if you are interested andrew@nautilusspear.com
I am using regular and traditional spearguns with three bands of 5/8" but it seems to me the same strength when I shoot the fish, now I understand how the roller able to release more power than the traditional one. Could you please give me the link where to buy the roller gun parts? I can build the body all I need is just the parts to assemble home made roller speargun.
I had one in the 70's. I found it a disappointment. Perhaps that is a good one. I found the rubber would bind on the roller. It was such a pain to load and untangle I actually threw it away. It was a big waste of rubber. Long bands folded over a roller like that would not behave it would tend to bind I stick with what is well proven and simple. I suppose the the new models work better but the gun I use is simple and works well. Power is not a problem.
Must be nice to get a big fish, but you need powerful equipment, I don't have even the weak ones, I am grateful for you to send me your equipment is old instead of throw it, send it to me for the benefit of
