Hey Tom, I’d love know hear your story on how you navigated university. You’ve said school was tough but you made it into and through uni. How did you manage this?

Love this comment - school was weird for me. I have a very creative brain but I was also very erratic in terms of routine and maturity at that age. I feel like at school you follow a system that works for the majority of people. But if you are neurodiverse you don’t seem to fit the mould. I have always been naturally smart and when I find something I’m interested in I can hyperfocus and be very good at it. However when it’s something I don’t want to do I am very hit or miss, especially as teachers used to right me off as they thought I just didn’t care or was choosing not to focus, when in my head I was really trying. I was quite lucky I was able to push through with a great support system around me family wise. When it came to last minute exam work I would end up being able to get good grades due to hyper focusing as well, that sort of adrenaline rush when I would be a few days out always pushed me over the line. Then went to uni on a rugby scholarship too which helped me find my place. When I got to uni, I got to pick something I enjoyed in Business. I had the freedom to be creative, to find the times that worked best for me to complete work. I got to create a routine that fitted my brain rather than what’s set for you. From that, although it wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows I was able to really progress through university and ended up walking away with 1st Class Honours. A lot of mess ups along the way, but I found my style of doing things which took a lot of trial and error. But when I found it the work came naturally to me rather than me forcing it. Hope this helps!
