How Russell Westbrook's Career Fell Apart | The Rise and Fall of The Brodie

Russell Westbrook's controversial career is respected by many, and criticized heavily by others. He quickly reached success upon entering the league, and reached the top of the basketball world, winning the MVP in 2017. A fantastic achievement, that has since been followed with dozens of ugly postseason exits. Over the last few years, it feels like Westbrook's playstyle has been questioned, and many detractors staunchly believe his game does not translate to winning. Is this the case? How has Westbrook’s reputation been tainted so quickly, and why has he failed to achieve recent playoff success? This is the rise and fall of The Brodie.

But still identify the individual greatness of Westbrook. Sure he's seemed to be falling off, but I think it more because of how the game is played now than anything. his fault he never evolved hes 33 still playing like he's 23. never learned to shot, never learned how to run an offense, stopped playing defense, etc. Most fraudulent MVP ever, Im not a Harden fan but he had better stats across the board that year and a better record but everyone wanted a way to stick it to KD for going to Golden State. Its all narrative based Jordan Shaq Duncan and LeBron should have all had more MVPs but the NBA wants too "spread it around" so they can have more stars to market.

I think the issue with Westbrook on the lakers is that LeBron does what he does already. Westbrook needs the ball to make plays and openings but LeBron does it better, so unless he's driving to the rim, he has no idea what to do when LeBron is the ball handler. This would be easier if Westbrook was a better defender but his defense is so lazy, all he does is wait for a steal or a rebound so he can be aggressive offensively. All he needs to do is work on reading the movements of players on defense and to find open lanes and wall people off on offense. Because when he does get in the paint he can still be dangerous, he just can't rely on his team always making that space for him every time. Trust that Davis will get the rebound, that LeBron will pass him the ball when he has an opening and that if he makes space LeBron can hit some clean shots

westbrook actually showed a good amount of times this season that he can still be a decent to good defender when he’s actually engaged on that side of the court. there was times where the lakers would actually go stretches where they were playing great defense and shutting down offenses and then they’d just stop trying as a unit if they got scored on a few times in a row. I’m not excusing russ he’s still responsible for jus being more disciplined on that end but I’m just saying this is a problem w the whole team as well not just him. we saw this lack of effort after a stretch of good defense shi a lot w bron at center n as good as bron did at that position, i can’t help but think not having your anchor on defense actually playing for 2 months out of the season would make it harder to consistently be out there putting pressure on the offense

They played poor defense, and Russ was that inefficient scoring the ball. You really can't have your #2/3 scorer shooting 5% below league average in true shooting, will be terribly difficult to win games. Especially when he isn't bringing anything else to the table, and his outside shooting is so poor teams are willing to leave him to shoot wide open 3pt shots. I think there is a chance he has a melo like change but he's going to have to accept being a role player if he wants to win. This has been a problem of his ever since 2017-2018 where he refuses to fit into any system and tries to be the system itself. He can't do that anymore and even if he does get his way he won't win anything. That gameplan never wins in the playoffs against good teams, the exact same thing is happening with Luka in Dallas right now and they won't be the Sun's with this style of play.

This is the only guy in NBA history who was abandoned by not one, but two future HOFers. Notice how KD/Harden didn't say a word about bringing Russ to Brooklyn? That's what we mean when we say 'love for the game'. There ain't nobody lining up to play with Russ. Contrast that with a guy like Iguodala, who gave up being an All-Star to be a glue guy, but a glue guy with a fistful of rings. That's a dude everyone was fighting over as a potential teammate. He never became disciplined and developed his game, look at LeBron love him or hate him into his late 30's he's continued to add to his game, post moves, improving his jumper, improved at picking his spots, improved his decision making everything etc. Westbrook was an amazing athlete and scorer who played with great intensity when he was young but he never substantially improved after his 3rd/4th season he just took more shots, stole rebounds from his teammates and dominated the ball more and more to put up big stats. Westbrook was one of my favorite players in 2012/2013 with his incredible driving and aggressiveness, but by 2015/2016 it was obvious he was holding back OKC and KD, and I 100% believe Russ was the reason KD left OKC, maybe KD should have done more to stop westbrooks recklessness with the ball especially in late game situations but it doesn't seem like anyone has been able to get Russ to listen so I can't really fault KD.

@respectedlocalgentleman7108
@@yuuki_ While I agree that KD is another media-hyped 'superstar' beta boiboi, the reason Russ gets all the blame is because Harden also left because of him. Compound this with KD/Beard reuniting in Brooklyn, without even a thought about inviting Russ, and that's why the image is as is.

if you watch his play, he's always been a low intelligence player, but his athleticism and energy overcame his shortfall in his often dumb play. the problems really started durring his first tripple double season, that was when he got a lot of positive feedback for his tripple doubles... and he became a very me centered selfish player by the end of that year. it got worse in his second tripple double year, with numberous videos of him boxing out his own teammates while chasing offensive boards (there is a famous video of him desperately boxing out steven adams for his 10th rebound while the golden state bench with steph and kevin clowning on him in a horrible golden state blowout), and it wasn't an issolated situation, it was openly speculated that westbrook might be paying steven adams under the table to let him get rebounds (as center play is often rewarded for boards and he seemed to just give up easy defensive boards to let westbrook get them). it was this season that his career veared from all time great to all time selfish player. he's never been the same since and no longer could share the floor with another star.
