I've noticed that the WalkSnail appears to be allocating more bandwidth to the bottom part of the frame than the top. It's almost like they dynamically alter the level of compression depending on the position in the frame. Perhaps they assume that most of the time the top half of the frame will be just blue-sky so won't need many bits to encode but the bottom half will have grass or other textured environments so they're not compressing it as hard so as to reduce compression artifacts. I've noticed this in my testing and I'll probably do a video examining more closely to see if this is actually the case.

Its interesting to hear you comment on the battery performance in the cold, I was shocked at how much flying in the cold impacted battery performance, this is my first year flying fpv so everything is new to me. My flight times were basically cut in half!

Great review Andy, I am loving my WS system, coming from DJI V1 Goggles & HDO. What I really like about WS right now is the 1S board which I put in an old BetaFPV 4" X-Knight, flys awesome and the video is great at an AUW of 200g with 4S Batt. If you follow Nick Burns I also recommend his custom 2S whoop build with WS, another awesome whoop.

Glad to see your content… great stuff!! Since the compatibility of the vistas with the Goggles 2 it is amazing seeing the vista/nebula quality on the OLED screens. It’s the best fpv video I’ve ever seen. And…. It has betaflight osd. O3 is great but as you mentioned it is a little darker in shadows.

Walksnail always looks like you play a video game with foilage detail on near :)

I like that word Andy - "smushy". That is the perfect word to describe the walksnail image. @ 9:09 you can clearly see the smushy factor around the trees in the distance. Its like a softening of the image in high detail areas....I give walksnail credit, they've come far from the original FW, but they've still got a lot of internal tuning to do.....

Nice to see you back and testing. Joshua Bardwell is also comparing DJI and Walksnail. Hopefully Walksnail continues to improve, perhaps improving HW quality. I'll stick with my DJI setup for now, but DJI has basically put the nails in the coffin for the original DJI HD system. Not buying the new DJI Goggles or O3 air unit which have fewer features than older DJI system + WTF OS.

Great review Andy. The colour profile for you camera looks much better/vivid (less washed-out/flat) than any of the other Walksnail reviews I've seen. Is this the HDMI capture device changing it as you mentioned or did you tune the camera settings? Would also be great if someone would do a review of the camera settings and whether there is a way to tweak dynamic range, white balance, exposure, etc. as you can with analog FPV cameras.

sounds like a job for WTFOS, they did this exact same thing for dji, made it record OSD files, made a part of the website to merge everything

The only reason I dived into walksnail is the vrx can just pop on my existing goggles and the $200 sale was a bargain. I can also put the vrx on my antenna tracker for longer range.

How am i going to change channels ? The vrx is connected and switches with a button ?

On the Caddex Download site, there are TWO ground files for the Goggles on version 29.33.16..??? Plus one file for the Air unit. Which one is for the Goggles?.....

Love walksnail has a 1s lite board

It's great to see Walksnail improving so much! They've done quite a bit since its release. 👍 I really like having multiple digital FPV systems to choose from and make everything more competitively priced. It's probably the reason why DJI dropped the V2 goggles to such an appealing $429 USD price! WalkSnail has a solid hold on 2nd place among digital FPV systems, with HDZero at a far distant 3rd... Their tech is simply not as advanced. DJI, of course, has a gigantic lead out in 1st place, especially since the 03 air units release. Nothing comes even remotely close to the performance that gives pilots. It's rather remarkable! Unlike what the haters were getting on, DJI listened to everything people were asking for, fulfilled them, and the 03 air unit actually has some things we are all pretty surprised about! Not much for those haters to hate on, anymore! Lol 🙄 Hopefully all of the different systems will continue to innovate and get prices lower, with new products, and shrink the size and weight. It's a fun time to be in the FPV hobby! 😎🤘

It's still EARLY DAYS for Walksnail remember!!!...My Goggles arrive Monday...It's worth mentioning those two front DJI antennas will be receiving precious little signal with the nulls facing the model...They should be Patch antennas. Great little test m8, thanks...🤔😳😀🇬🇧

Great comparison Andy. Is really helpful to have these random in-time snapshots. Something that can be looked back on in 2023/24. Other than the smussy-ness of regions of fine details at times, the Walksnail video encoding is really looking comparable. It's a mater of having consistent clear image. ie: actual vs. virtual as suggested. Kind of reminds me of old Betamax vs. VHS tape brand comparisons from 1980's/1990's. It might be worth noting that Walksnail using H.265 video encoding, like the DJI O3 system, while classic DJI HD (v1, v2) uses H.264 encoding.

Nice to see you back. Both look terrible at low flight. Walksnail a little worse than DJI but both are a blocky messes over the grass and snow. Both look their best in high altitude flying. So I'll stick with HDzero low resolution but never blocky and disorienting view, especially for my whoops.

I have the goggle2 and o3, but if walksnail makes a nite cam like the polar, im switching..

I so want Walksnail to smash it, but they are far from that goal yet. The tops of the trees and the grass still look like brushed felt in comparison to the detail in the DJI system.

50mbits walksnail got q serious problem as when transmission becomes difficult the bitrate drop bellow the one you should have in 25mbits mode. So for me it's still buggy

DJI is clearly much better: not just the grass pattern, but the treetops show it very clearly. Not to mention the much better penetration. It's a pity that Walksnail isn't on par.

You are supposed to be comparing latest and greatest walksnail with latest and greatest DJI which is O3 and Goggles 2 not 4 year old first generation tech.

Walksnail is ok... but nowhere near DJI quality. The grass and tree tops are smudged. Overall the image is too dark.

Am i missing something? It still looks crap...

Dji actually still looks better. Walksnail looks like you had a dirty lens on the trees in the far and the grass still looks bad...
