How Safe Are Some Food Delivery Drivers Behind the Wheel?

With delivery apps, it’s easier than ever to get your favorite food delivered to your door. However, some food delivery drivers have not driven. Inside Edition’s investigative team found over 1,000 civil lawsuits filed since 2016 alleging that delivery drivers for DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats caused accidents. One delivery app driver, Todd Burton, slammed into and killed a woman while she was crossing an intersection. He made 1,000 deliveries between the incident and before he pleaded guilty. Another driver, Andrew Burgher was charged with killing Silvia Velasco, while under the influence and making a delivery. Burgher pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial. Doordash, Uber Eats and Grubhub say their apps do not encourage unsafe driving and they perform thorough and periodic background checks on all drivers. Doordash also says they have started a new program allowing drivers to earn a regular wage without worrying about the number of deliveries they make.

As a former delivery driver who works for a restaurant and not a service, there's literally still pressure on us too. Any delivery service whether its food or packages or groceries etc, semi drivers, it doesnt matter. No matter who you work for, theres pressure to make deadlines, get there and back faster etc. Ubereats, doordash, etc shouldnt be the only ones called out here. Call out semi companies that basically force their drivers to drive under inclimate conditions like snow and ice to get deliveries to destinations on time or the driver loses money. Etc.

I just did my own investigative research on this first incident. First of all they said the driver eventually plead guilty so I’m going to assume it was to leaving the scene of an accident and not manslaughter. Next I looked at this intersection on Google Maps and the direction the pedestrian was headed didn’t have a crosswalk sign like the other three corners of the intersection did. Next you can see the green light reflecting on the ground indicating west bound traffic has the right a way meaning the pedestrian shouldn’t be crossing anyways. Finally it’s 3am at night with wet conditions so the pedestrian should be on high alert regardless. The driver shouldn’t be speeding but the pedestrian made fatal decisions.

Absolutely speaking from experience you only get a at minimum of 4-6$ (CAD) for a delivery on door dash and if a customer is a half hour away it’s honestly not worth the effort if they don’t tip… in the food delivery industry it’s vital for everyone to tip because without tipping door dash and other major companies don’t pay there workers enough at all

I’m appalled because I applied to do doordash a few years ago and was denied because of my driving record. (And I should have been) I was 18 when I started driving and i admit I had little regard for the law at the time. I never did anything that would be considered reckless but I also wasn’t scared of a ticket. I want to reiterate that I never intentionally endangered anyone and would only do things like roll stops if I could clearly see the intersection was dead and I was driving alone but I was 2 or 3 points from a revoked license when I applied for doordash at 21 or 22 and was denied because of it. I’m 26 now and have only 1 point remaining from my past and have drastically changed my driving habits. I rarely order doordash or Uber eats because it’s outrageously expensive but I would hope when I do the driver is safe. A direct but safety driven route from the places I order from to my home still gets me piping hot delicious food.

I actually did Uber eats for a few weeks in July of this year. I will tell you that it was a good side hustle. And really helped me financially, but what I will say is that the pressure is like on you very quickly. There would be times that would be extra keyed up and anxious, especially at night given how intense the roads were where I worked which was Atlanta. I take safety very very seriously. I thankfully had, no experiences at such as the ones described here. But others might not be so lucky. It’s not worth driving fast over an order and putting other peoples lives at risk. I've done 5k UE/DD deliveries, and there is so much wrong with the way they do business it's shameful. Your story doesn't touch on distracted driving at all, and that's got to be a huge factor in many accidents. UE, as a matter of course, will popup deliveries with a countdown timer that "demands" the drivers attention within a few seconds while their driving. That's a way of doing business that causes 100% FORESEEABLE problems... I'm done doing delivery, and count myself lucky I never caused harm to anyone while doing so.
@VOAN
@VOAN 8 месяцев назад
Technically when you're doing UberEats delivery, the only way to avoid such distraction is to park somewhere and just wait for a request to pop-out. After you had been assign a pick-up turn notification off and the request will stopped coming. Once you finish that pick-up and delivery and mark it as delivered then you login again to wait for another. This is safe way to do it but a lot if people don't follow this way cause then you miss the better request.

Sometimes you got to wait minutes to get the order. i used to make 300 dollars a week but now i barely make a hundred and that mostly because i deny most orders. sometimes i take these orders because a customer tips 7-10$. on top of all the cars and stop lights and people some deliveries may take 30-40 minutes.

Wtf does a delivery company gotta do with a person who has a license and keeps Killing people but they keep getting chance after chance without getting any consequences like years in prison and banned from driving a car and banned from having a license the delivery companies aren't the problem here its the secretary of state and the judges who keep giving them bonds and keep allowing this behavior to happen

There’s a lot of pressure to go go go when you’d deliver. I was put on a double delivery and had a hard time finding my first delivery because they put in the wrong address and I was about five minutes off target because of it so the 2nd delivery got inpatient and demanded their order and tip be refunded. Ridicules.

People just can't take responsibility a bunch of whips, no matter which company who work for you drive for your own safety a workplace cannot tell you to speed ignore traffic laws, were food delivery not first responders. And if they do you report them them to HR.

I drive for a living and people throw themselves at you tonight two did this to me one in the parking lot and another in a 4 lane highway and it was dark and foggy and he just saw me pull out if the drive and just wet for it. A lot of it is people's fault.

Bruh, stop blaming the companies. blame your local secretary of state and these judges that's who you're supposed to fight and sue against, not the delivery companies, if they dont give out the licenses to drive
