The type of contracted sentence in this lesson is very efficient for daily conversations, it will make learners sound more natural and native.

As a manhua translator (mostly from Taiwan/Hong Kong), this is a very important point for me. Most of the time, the context (other dialogues and images) will help, but there are certain situations that are vague (sometimes, it's a deliberate choice by the writer !). The second difficulty is to translate the shortenend sentences in my mother language (French), without writing too much ! In manhua, the numbers of characters is limited...And French has a tendency to make loooong sentences. Anyway, great content, as always !

@@edchong2877 其實如果語境夠清楚,說「不要給我」也是完全沒問題的,但如果為避免混淆,就可以加「就」,讓語意本身更清楚。

I feel like they're so commonly used, a lot of Chinese listening exercises will use this sentence structure without explaining it first. 🤣 So I'm actually very used to hearing these contracted sentences and guessing the meaning from context (like "you like, buy it). I never knew it had a specific name until now!

I think this teacher considered English as the standard and then compare the differences between English and Chinese. This method is totally wrong. The contracted sentence is how Chinese language works. It just omitted the unnecessary words to make communication more efficient.

Thanks Grace! You always choose interesting video topics🙂 I agree with ABChinese and like how you included the literal translations also. I remember you said it’s time-consuming to translate each word like in your older videos. I think putting the literal translations like this works similarly and hopefully takes less time for you to do.

I wonder: although these contracted sentences are used in daily everyday communication, would they be considered too informal to use for school assignments, newspapers, or when speaking in professional settings?
@GraceMandarinChinese

Hi Peter! Based on what I've read about “緊縮句”, all the info suggests they're more often used in spoken language. However, it doesn't specifically mention whether they always give a casual tone to the content. Personally, though, I find that a lot of them do come across as somewhat casual. Hope this is useful! :)

Great video again. Thank you for teaching us ❤ One request: Could you please consider changing the colour of the simplified and traditional ? It's really hard to focus on the traditional because the blue highlighting. I'd ask you to switch it, but then other people will probably complain about the same issue in reverse. Maybe just have both text's black? Or have one red and one blue or something. But Black and blue makes our eyes naturally look at the blue part instead of the black, if that makes sense?

Hi grace, I'm happy to find your channel! I had a question. My goal is improve my reading and writing so I can read even a kids book, a magazine in mandarin. How can I do this? I am currently self teaching myself the characters with practical audio visual chinese. If I do this every day a chapter, will I eventually learn enough characters so I can read and write more fluently, I use traditional chinese. Thank you!
