How Should Eugene Have Handled The 2 Million? | The Sopranos Explained

In The Sopranos, gangster Eugene Pontecorvo inherits $2 million from his aunt, and he goes to Tony Soprano and asks to retire from the mob. Tony thinks about it, but ultimately refuses to let him leave.
Surrounded from all sides - trapped by Tony and by the feds as Eugene is an information, Eugene has a tragic ending.
Could Eugene have gotten out though. Should Eugene have handled the 2 million and Tony Soprano a different way. Was there a way for he and his family to retire to Florida.

He should have kept it to himself. By handing Tony a large amount of cash, Tony saw Eugene’s worth as an earner and wanted to keep him. I seem to remember Tony telling Christopher that 'the books were closed' and that was why he wasn't made earlier, I think in reference to Christopher bringing up killing "Email" and how that should have been enough to be made, no idea which episode. That could be part of why it took so long for Pontecorvo to get made. I wonder if Chase had Pontecorvo's ending in mind when he had him made at the same time as Christopher, since that is when he took the oath.

For an analysis like this, if you've watched some of the former mob guys on RU-vid or documentaries on TV, a pretty common thread is that most of these guys weren't very smart, crafty or able to "think outside the box" Eugene might have been streetwise or had "street smarts" but to come up with a plan to leave the life and get out from under the thumb of the FBI would need a lot more than that.

Eugene’s biggest problem imo is that he was already an FBI informant. Even if he disappears from the mob, how’s he supposed to function when they’re going to be on his ass? You can’t buy a house/put your kids in a school without them getting an idea of where you are. Even if he decides to serve his sentence instead of ratting, we’ve no idea how long he’s going to be in prison for. If anything it just fits the statement even more about how the life of a guy like that ends: “dead, or in the can.”
@jaybeebee9288
@jaybeebee9288 5 дней назад
He had a couple of other options, tough but doable: 1) Do the sentence, and leave prison wealthy; this has a further couple of variables, how long his mother lived, and exactly what the Feds had on him. If his Mum was 94 when she died, and he was 51 at the time of incarceration, and looking at 20 years, he'd be out in 10 with good behaviour,. He'd be 61, and with the lack of booze/tobacco and whatever other drugs he might be on, if he lived like a monk he'd have a decent shot at a happy life, albeit 10 years will change a man. However, if she died in her 50's like his dad, well wtf does he have to look forward to? ; 2) Escape to a country with no extradition. This is a big ask as it uproots his little girl, his bitch wife isn't likely to want to go along with it/him, and don't get me started on his druggy son. But, there are shall we say entities who can get them onsite, if not onboard - that's Eugene's problem.

Now granted Tony would probably easily find if he moved to Florida, but if he didn't go there but instead went to i don't know... friggin' Appalachia it would probably take a long time for tony to find him, Fabian Petrullo the rat from season 1 went on to live for 12 years and would probably have gone on for longer if Tony hadn't run into him...

I wouldn’t have told Tony about the money. Like someone, i think Christopher, said - you’re only as good as your last envelope. Eugene could’ve done whatever he wanted and paid his dues, maybe even a bit more, out of his inheritance. He could’ve engineered a scenario where he was Tony’s Best Earner. I completely forgot Gene was compromised - one of the drawbacks of watching the show in 2min clips on YT lately. Unsurprisingly, Tony and the Feds both “reject” his move to Florida (as if he had a choice). Even if he caught Tony on a ‘good day,’ the Feds would never let him go - they’re Vampires. Eugene kept his Honor, and went out like a man, on his terms. I believe he handled the situation the best way he could.

Best thing for Eugene to have done would be not to mention the inheritance to anyone. Then tell Tony that he developed bronchitis or something and that he wouldn't be able to hang out on New Jersey construction sites in the winter anymore. Ask to be "transferred" to Florida like Ralph was. Since Eugene was a middling earner, Tony might have been convinced to go along with it. Then tell the FBI that Tony ordered it. This would force the FBI's hand. They would have to either let him go and he would become a less valuable informant, being thousands of miles away and running small rackets. Or they would have to arrest him and then he could make the decision whether to testify or not. Maybe it would be better to take 5 or even 10 years to not have to rat. Either way, once he finally got to Florida, he'd have to get some income anyway. He was in his early 40's and 2 mil isn't going to hold a family of 4 forever.

1:48 Interesting, I heard a slightly different explanation. Basically, David Chase and the writers had 70% of the season 3 storyline mapped out and then suddenly Nancy Marchand died so they decided to basically start from scratch and write Livia off altogether. As such, Tony needed a new antagonist for the season (Livia was going to rat on him to the feds about the airline tickets) and the new character in development known as Ralphie was given a bump up to be the new foil for Tony. Realizing that a much more well known and stronger actor was required to play the part of Tony's new headache, Joe Pantoliano was quickly hired and Robert Funaro (who as mentioned, was still under contract) was given a new, but lesser role to play instead.

I still think his wife hired the guy to take Tony out in the last episode. First episode of the season was called “Members Only” and the diner guy in the last episode was listed in the credits as Man in Members Only jacket. If this were the case, it means Tony was basically a dead man walking after episode 1 of the season and all of the New York war stuff was essentially pointless because his fate was already sealed. That’s how I will always picture it, at least.

His best bet would have have gotten Tony on tape talking about something illegal, but would have to have had something more sophisticated than a running tape recorder and wire. Some kind of custom digital recorder built into a necklace or belt buckle perhaps? That kind of thing existed then, but was expensive... but hey, he's got 2 million dollars, he could pay for it himself if the FBI wouldn't/couldn't.

i don't know if it's the case, but he should've lawyered up. With Tony's murder order told to the Feds, they would have had to pull him out and end the case with what they had, enough for RICO and conspiracy to murder to boot. The lawyer would've negotiated for immunity or WP with no prison time to button up his crucial testimony.

Eugene could've worked as plumber or electrician and lived a relatively normal life and then retired to Florida with the $2mil. Some of the mobsters felt they didn't have any other choices but Eugene would've been WAY better off without the mob.

Eugene should have just done a Henry Hill... sure there’s no action. He would have to wait around like everyone else. He wouldn't even get decent food. Right after he goes in to witness protection he would order some spaghetti with marinara sauce and instead get egg noodles and ketchup. He would be an average nobody. He would get to live the rest of his life like a schnook.

Thank you for taking your time and doing an episode of Eugene. His death scene next to Adriana is probably one of the most distrusting scenes of the series. He loved his family like you said, he way trapped like a RAT 🐀
@tedwojtasik8781
@tedwojtasik8781 3 дня назад
The story line was stupid though I liked the episode. A more realistic situation would have Eugene use his own contacts (all mobsters and criminals have contacts outside the family and mob in general for such situations) to set up a new life for him and his family under news names, probably in the Keys and take off. Tony nor anyone else could have found him, including the Feds who would have assumed Tony found out Eugene was a rat and whacked him. It would have literally been a very easy getaway.

His only real hope was to go off the reservation, just straight up packed a bag and never looked back. The problem is he couldn't ask anyone for help because Jersey would have put the screws to whoever helped till they gave him up, and the feds would have found him if he remained in the country. His only hope was to take the money and go somewhere that doesn't have extradition laws.

I believe it was that same episode where Eugene and Chrissy both got made - Tony said to them both, "Once you enter this family, there's no getting out." Had he not been cooperating, simply disappearing may have worked; however, if Jersey wouldn't locate him, the Feds eventually would've. Basically, he was trapped and there really was no way out.

@Firthy2002
@Firthy2002 2 дня назад
I don't think there was an escape scenario but he certainly could have played it a little better. He was literally the last (known) rat alive so the FBI not letting him go is totally understandable and likely impossible for Eugene to bargain his way out of. Even if he could somehow make a deal with the FBI and got out without the Family knowing, he'd have been living like Febby Petrulio for the rest of his days. It could be argued it was even more riskier than the Febby situation. Moving to Florida wasn't exactly off the radar since the Family had business connections down there, and you've also got Little Carmine hanging around down there. Eugene was known to New York so the potential to get found out was high.

Eugene imo should have secretly offered Tony a retirement deal (€1 million cash goes directly to Tony no one else needs to know!). Eugene could have agreed to be a contact down in Florida so he’d be close but not too close. Let’s be honest, we all know he’s not the first.

What he needed to do was to research early memory loss and start acting strangely around the crew, not remembering things, accelerating the onset to pronounced memory drain. Although risky, memory loss would be the one way Tony might possibly have been comfortable getting Eugene moved out of his role and even possibly let him retire and live.

he couldn’t get out. The FBI had him by the b@lls. Should’ve used some of the 2 mill to get an MVP lawyer to get the best deal or best case. Then disappear. Then again, the feds in the show clearly showed their incompetence with informants so Eugene may have ended dead anyway. It’s a great debate either way.

Eugene's wife was not a good mob wife. You know what this is. You can't go around insisting that he gets out. You shouldn't have married him in the 1st place. Charmane could complain to Artie about Tony all she wanted. But Artie wast a made guy and Tony, to his credit, kept Artie from veering too close.
