A fun one is how trading craig rivet to san jose got montreal josh gorges and max pacioretty who has now gotten montreal suzuki and tatar. Edit: Thanks for all the likes everyone :)

Then Montréal traded Gorges for a 2nd pick that was later traded with an additionnal 2nd pick for Shaw that got later traded for 2nd, 3rd and 7th pick, that was later traded for Jake Allen.....This trade happened 15 years ago and still keep on giving!!!

Actually Bergevin has mentioned during an interview that, since he was only Ass. GM, drafting Danault was his idea but he had to push for it to happen. What's funny is that MB was named Ass. GM only 10 days before the 2011 draft where the Hawks picked Danault.

Bergevin, who was Assistant GM in Chicago at the time, really liked Danault after watching him play some games in the Q. He wanted to draft him with Chicago’s 18th pick but they went with Mark McNeill from Prince Albert. Who played 2 NHL games, none for Chicago, and is currently playing in Austria. But Chicago also had the 26th pick so Marc got his guy. That’s why when he saw an opportunity to sell high and buy low and get Danault, he took it.

I hope Stan Bowman writes a book one day and explains what he was thinking with this trade. I remember Danault stepped in for an injured Kruger who was a defensive 4th line center. He had a broken wrist and was primarily used to win d zone faceoffs. Danault stepped in and was just as good, if not better. Also Danault was younger, cheaper at the time, and not recovering from a broken wrist. But as soon as Kruger could return to the lineup he was put back in his old 4th line center role and Danault was viewed as expendable. I think you have to go back about 10 years to find a Blackhawks 1st round pick that is still on the team after their rookie deal expires. Schmaltz, Jokiharju, Hartman, Teravienen, and Danault. Not saying all those trades are bad, but it's a trend that has hurt the team over the last decade.

Diaz was signed by Pierre Gauthier. But it became Bergevin's best trade. Also Fleischman was a PTO that year. One more funny details about this deal. Weise was a Ranger but couldn't stand Tortorella. So the Rangers traded him to the Canucks. Shortly after, Tortorella gets to coach the Canucks. Well well well Dutch, here we meet again. And Weise got sent to Montreal. Only to play with Michel Therrien. Dude was hounded by bully coaches every city he went.

As a Habs fan, having this video drop *ON MY BIRTHDAY* is one of the best presents I could get! Thanks, Steve! You're right. It's an outstanding trade. I kind of like Bergevin's tenure in Montréal. He's a guy who got to do what few GMs get to do: fix a mess he caused. Usually, if you screw up, you're canned and go find a job elsewhere. And often times, the lessons you learned through your first time around, you get to apply them; it's why there are so many tales of "oh dang, why did we fire him then, he was so good for the other team!" He's certainly a controversial figure, but I think he's a lot smarter than he was at the beginning of his tenure, he has a vision and a plan, and after more than a few ho-hum years, I'm actually really excited about the Habs future!

Bergevin as an Assistant GM in CHI was the one who wanted to draft Danault and they picked Mark McNeil at #18 before listenning to him and acquiring another 1st rounder to pick Phill. Danault signed as a free agent this past offseason, so unless Montreal trades Romanov, which fans are hoping doesn't happen for at least the next 5 years, Montreal's branch of this trade tree is done. Gaudette was traded before the deadline this past season to those same Chicago Blackhawks who gave up on Danault, so Vancouver's branch continues on. Edit: This past draft, Romanov was traded to the Islanders so Montreal could acquire Kirby Dach from Chicago, which means Romanov's branch continues.

Rightfully so. He should've started a rebuilt years ago, when Plekanec and Desharnais were at their peak value, instead he resigned them along with Emelin. They got cash strapped. Should've traded them, hope for a tank, draft high and he got the extra cash to OVERpay for a top 6 UFA or an offersheet to a RFA. Should've NEVER let Pacioretty become captain. Should've never bridged PK, that 9 mill cash stapped him again. Should've never traded Sergachev, should've never signed Alzner, should've resigned Radulov and should've traded Price instead of cash strapping AGAIN. It took him 7 yrs to realize that Center is where it starts, then it's the top 4 D. Anywhere else he would've been fired a long time ago.

@prodICYN 3 года назад
@@castrodenavarroneBro half of what you said could not be done haha😂 MB offered more to Radulov than the stars, PK was the Image of the canadiens along with price, they simply HAD to resign them, Sergachev.. meh, maybe, it ain't like drouin is a 3rd or 4th line winger, he's a 2nd scoring winger on a good contract, Emelin was never high in value, they easily got rid of his contract, paccioretty not being capitain maybe, but I mean he's gone now. MB started the rebuild when they started to get bad, are you seriously that much of an idiot that you would think they should've started a rebuild when they we're consistently a top 2 team in the atlantic, and a top 5 team in the east? and most importantly... NO BIG TIME UFA WANTS TO COME TO MONTREAL, NO ONE Brother did you seriously think he wasn't trying to get Tavares, Panarin, Pietrangelo, they all said no, tavares didn't even want to speak to MB. Marc bergevin has been one of the best and one of the most consistent Gm in the league for at least 3-4 years now, he's arguably done one meh-arguably bad trade which would be the sergachev one, the rest, he fleeced: -ARI (Domi) -Preds(Weber) -Hawks(Danault, romanov) -EDM(Petry) -VGK(didn't fleece them but Tatar, Suzuki, Norlinder) -CBJ (Anderson) -Jets (Armia) He also drafted well in general: -Primeau (7th round) -Romanov(2nd round) -Struble(2nd round) -Jordan Harris (3rd round I believe) -Caufield (15th overall) -Mysak (2nd round) -Guhle (16th overall, was really good in wjcs) -Mattias Norlinder (3rd round) KK is slowly becoming a really good player, with the potential of being one of the best 2nd line center in the league Poehling id a tough one, good pick, not a steal, but he's got potential

Spalding was part of the Kessel trade, which turned to Galchenyuk then Zucker. Hornqvist was just sent to Florida for Matheson. A nice tie in is that Norton is also one of the D-men Mario is splitting in the statue outside of PPG

People put to much value on late first-round picks. That's not to say it's not a valuable pick but getting a solid bottom 6 forward or third line D is a solid pick at that stage. As long as you get a player that's eventually an NHL player you did well. As for tanking, being a team who knows they have to rebuild and unloading your talent to start over isn't tanking in my book. You were already not good and weren't in a position to get better. You need picks and prospects. Tanking is knowing a big talent or some big talent players are coming up in the draft but losing when you clearly didn't have to is tanking. I say this because the draft lottery wasn't to stop bad teams from rebooting but to stop promising teams from losing to draft.

I'd always thought my Habs were not the sharpest at the art of the deal. But, the Dangler has caused me to reconsider. I have to say regarding Movember that it would be a lot nicer if Matthews didn't have that awful stache.
