►SCRIPT
Number 1
To make his mixes look flashy, and sound more exciting, Skrillex tends to backspin his previous tracks when transitioning
But Skrillex does not stop there with his backspinning. He also implements this technique to compliment Build Ups.
Sometimes Skrillex even uses Backspinning for the sake of getting that Backspin sound effect
Number 2
Let’s begin with his favorite and most used tool, the Filter Knob.
So Skrillex tends to High Pass Filter the current song when it’s about to reach its next section.
To add on to that he also implements using a Echo and Reverb Effects when High Pass Filtering
And sometimes he just uses a well timed Echo effect
But what’s not easy though is Skrillex’s next technique which implements using the volume fader and high pass filter.
Though Skrillex only tends to use the Echo and Reverb effect when mixing, he sometimes uses the roll effect to also accent his songs
This works great during otherwise boring sections in tracks like breakdowns and outros. And so with his accenting techniques covered, let’s now move on to his mixing style.
Number 3
So Skrillex doesn’t always beat match his songs. Sometimes he even just plays them in. The trick to doing this though is proper timing and counting.
So Skrillex first prepares his next song by cueing it up at section right before it hits the 1, which should be a down beat, then he moves on to the effect section, activates a reverb effect, stops the current song when it reaches the end of it’s phrase, then plays the next song on beat
Transitioning like this is one of the easiest ways to shift genres and BPMs when you’re completely in tuned with your timing and counting. But what happen when you’re not? Well Skrillex implements 2 really cool techniques that get him out of bind when mixing.
Number 4
When Skrillex get’s his counting off one way he easily fixes that is by making a 1 beat loop on the song he’s mixing from
By doing that he gives enough time for his next track to reach its next section. Because the loop on the current song offsets the difference.
If there’s not enough time though to make a loop, the last resort Skrillex tends to fall to is to use a backspin on the previous song right before the next song mixes in
All you need to remember though, is that if you’re in doubt, backspin,
Number 5
Skrillex keeps the energy of his mix up by mixing to the next song’s chorus section right when the current song’s chorus ends.
The trick to keeping things hyped is that he mixes the next song’s build up section when the current song’s chorus section hits. So that when the current song’s chorus ends, the next songs chorus begins.

To be fair, he's only doing basic shit with a controller, exactly the same as millions of unpaid internet radio DJ's every night of the week. It's not rocket science, and in fact, is piss easy with the technology available (ie everything is sync'd to the same BPM, all the effects are BPM sync'd too, every drop is set up as a cue point on a pad). A monkey can do what he does, lets be honest.

Skrillex is one of the few producers I would wanna sit down with and ask a bunch of technical shit to. Not just music but, also branding and image stuff. Cuz, I have to admit. Some producers are technically skilled. Some are great at branding and promotion. This dude is good at both. And he learned all that shit way too fast. Aka, he won a Grammy for a dubstep album….like, bro. Fucking how? Cuz, it’s possible. He did it. It was even more unheard of than it is today. It could happen again. But, how in the actual fuck did he do it? Right now, dnb is gonna blow up. Every edm producer is saying this. It’s just a matter of when. Dubstep when skrillex did his thing was almost prideful in its modesty. It was like, skrillex was the Chad Muska of skateboarding but, for edm. He came out, and somehow became a rockstar. And everybody in the community hated him until they realized he was also one of the most skilled in the field. And, I dunno how either of them did it? Cuz, whereas chad lived an explicitly lavish lifestyle. Who knows what fucking car skrillex drives? I don’t. Who knows how much his fit costs? I don’t. I don’t know a think about the dude, other than he’s hyper as fuck and somehow made dubstep 5 years ahead of its time become relevant the moment he made it. It just doesn’t make any sense. But it worked. Whatever the fuck he did. And I gotta know. I’m tryna think back to how I got into dubstep. It was him. Why? I heard my buddy say “yo. This dude makes crazy shit out of memes.” That was it. And than randomly I was listening. Something about the pop culture references hit different. It was satirical in a way. Dubstep prior was super emotional. And deep. Skrillex made it accessible through memes dude. Like, is that the secret sauce. If something is too technical, just make it seem funny? Cuz I think it is. Looking at some of the more successfully dubstep producers now, most, if not all songs have a joke in them. Than, there’s skrillex’s image. A party animal with over the top energy and charisma. I mean. Maybe there’s a formula here. Take something really hard, technical and complex, make it seem like a joke, than present it like an animal. And people will have no choice but to notice. Than adapt into the mainstream. Boom. But that still seems to simple. There’s something more. And that is what I wanna know.

There's a LOT to unpack from Skrillex and his life Jackson. He was a musician first and foremost, and he just happened to go into production and DJing. But hey, if the guy is genuine, and lives simply, then it's all good!
@Slotherson
@Slotherson Год назад
Well it's not like he came out of nowhere. He was the face of From First to Last before he went solo, he's known music his whole life; and when he went solo the person that picked him up and put them on their label was Deadmau5. However you feel about deadmau5, the dude is one of the most prolific dj's on earth. For a long time, i fucking hated skrillex, I was listening to dubplates back in 06 and hearing everyone refer to every genre as dubstep killed me inside for a long time. Dust settles, and skrillex did nothing but improve his sound design, mixing and mastering both live and in studio, and then went to try new genres and bring smaller artists that were once in his position to heights they'd never dream of (a reminder that Porter Robinson's Spitfire was one of his labels first releases; as was Skream, one of thee biggest inspirations for dubstep, first foray into house music) Skrillex is a genius, 10 years ago i would've said luck, but he's proven with work and dedication that he's a genius.

It's important to note that the chorus mixing style you show at the end is a very effective and high energy way to mix but you MUST give the people the breakdown/buildup every couple tracks. Otherwise its just heavy drop into heavy drop with only elements of the next build up peeking through the current chorus.
@djcarlo
@djcarlo 2 года назад
Fair point! I feel like there's times you can go drop into drop, but the build up IS very important.
@papi_roisterous
@papi_roisterous 5 месяцев назад
yes and no. If you're booked for an hour slot prime time main stage at any major festival then the chorus after chorus after chorus style mixing is probably what the crowd has come for. banger on top of banger for that hour slot. To the contrary, if i am in it for the long haul and i am attending a house/deep house show or fest then I absolutely agree with letting the tracks ride out. Certainly more my style.

Thought I would add my point of view. (DJ RENE) Been in the business for over 40 years and have gone through many changes using various pieces of the technology. Like an artist/performer its all about entertaining your audience. In some cases a singer you may stand center stage with a mic stand and not move, in others cases they dance across a 100ft stage with lights, effects and pyro. The technology used in both cases may differ as well as their delivery techniques but the intention is the same, to satisfy the paying customer. There are many sides to a pyramid but there all lead to the same tip. The lesson here is to learn where possible, improve where necessary with the single goal to incorporate aspects of the trade that will enable you to increase your personal earnings. Thanks Carlo for your efforts and sharing when possible.
@djcarlo
