How Social-Emotional Learning Benefits Everyone | Caige Jambor | TEDxBemidji

We breathe without even thinking about it. However, when we do start to think about each breath, something changes. Likewise, when we pause to consider what is really going on with the people around us, some things become remarkably clear. Childhood trauma can affect a person’s entire life, but changing how we respond to others makes a big difference to individuals and our whole society. Caige Jambor explains how social-emotional learning (SEL) changes the conversation from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” and how everyone can begin to use SEL tools. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I'm finding it doesn't work. Our school implemented SEL two years ago and I'm seeing twice the amount of behavior issues. Perhaps it's being implemented poorly and I want it to work, yet kids know the consequences are kindness and compassion rather than... consequences. When they want a brain break or a snack they just misbehave and bingo SEL to the rescue.

This all sounds so nice and sugar coated but the reality is that it enables teachers and aides to essentially practice psychology on children in public schools without a license and without the parents knowledge or consent. It is the state, through the public school system, pushing values on your kids that an administrator decides. An administrator who is almost guaranteed to be a progressive liberal whose ideas will permeate every aspect of the curriculum Funny how he mentions the WEF and "Stakeholders". Equally terrifying is his use of a chime at the beginning and end if his little talk. I suppose we are to react as Pavlov's dogs did. It's actually sickening

I couldn’t agree more. Notice the SEL diagram shows the schools in the center of the ring. Then community, and at the very last outer ring is parents/families. It should be the opposite, the family should be the nucleus of a child’s life, then community, then schools.

I think I lost it at the bell. So we're not supposed to say "what is wrong with Josh," but rather "what happened to Josh" -- which essentially positions Josh as a victim and devoid of his own agency. Josh *is* the victim, he's a CHILD. The adults should know better. Josh being a child he's still developing and environment plays a big factor on what he learns and how he learns it. In my perspective, the adults failed Josh by not modelling on how to manage and work with their emotions, but using him as a safer option to take out the stress of their emotions on.

S.E.L. and C.R.T. should not be utilized in the classroom nor used as a basis for a curriculum that is taught to kids of any age level. “What’s happened to you” doesn’t explain or justify Josh’s outburst. Josh doesn’t need to be coddled, he needs to learn resilience. He still has to function in the world despite the bad things going on in life. In real life, most people don’t care one bit about Josh’s problems because they have their own. In the real world, we are expected to do our jobs and do so professionally. Coddling Josh will only make him a failure in real life. And this is far worse than what he is suffering through now. Resilience is the answer, not SEL.

Teachers are not psychologists and moralizing or teaching a moral belief system has no place in the public school classroom. Not every parent agrees with the “wisdom” you’re teaching and many disagree. This is not the domain of the public school teacher. You are not the parents. Until this is gone, my kids will be homeschooled. Everyone has bad days, be kind. Don’t give kids surveys about their psychological state or provide convenient excuses for bad behavior.
