This video answers a few of the common questions I receive on a daily basis in terms of kWh production figures.
If you can, it's to fill your southern roof with panels, assuming there isn't shade. West and East are both great too. North is the least ideal side but in certain circumstances it is still necessary when needing to achieving a certain power output.

Thanks for a look at the software, very cool. A 15% drop on the north side is significant, but it's not the deal breaker that I thought it would be. It could be better for time of use. For an off-grid system it may be better to spread your energy input around so you don't have to rely so much on a battery that can only charge during part of the day. This only applies to panels with an east/west component. If they're pointed straight north then they're pretty much always worse. I really hope that enough sunlight gets through my neighbor's leafless trees in the winter to make my southern panels usable. Fingers crossed. I've seen just a little shading kill a whole panel before.

Very interesting... I'm UK based and looking to replace an existing array with new panels. Even though it's less than ideal, I have a large area of north facing roof and placing the old panels there will save me having to store or dispose of them. I'm hoping they'll generate useful output in cloudy conditions - which we experience more often than southern California :)

Just had a new array fitted on my garrage with 10 panels south east and 10 panels north west. Right now the north are as good as the south and in winter should still contribute. Panels are the cheapest part of the system really so I just wanted to cover the whole roof and have my inverter running as much as possible.

With the price of quality panels coming down from what was already a great value compared to 10 years ago, why not spend the additional (small compared to the system cost) dollars and put panels on South, East, and West? Here where we live, those West facing panels have the potential to lower electric bills significantly when compared to East-facing panels due to the time of day change in rates. (I have the perfect backyard facing near true south so I have a Sunrise String, and Mids String, and a Sunset String all ground mount).

It mostly comes down to feasibility of installation with the roof that we have to work with

Panels are so cheap now it makes sense to fit as many as you can afford, more panels boosts winter production, and excess in the summer can be exported as in the UK we now get decent export rates.

Impressive software, but as a homeowner I'm not sure it's worth it if you're already knowledgeable and know your location well. If this were free, I'd love to tinker with it!
