The launch of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule to the International Space Station on May 30th marked the first time that NASA astronauts took off from U.S. soil since 2011. The event also represented the first time a commercially designed and built spacecraft carried astronauts, an achievement that SpaceX and Boeing have vied for for years under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.

Funny how Space X were granted half the funding Boeing did yet they managed to do more than twice the work and go on to be the first in the commercial space race. I applaud you Mr Musk 👏

@@Coolgiy67 Lol. Have you been to engineering school? My classes so far have been math and physics only. A physicist will actually know more details intricately than an Engineer would. Anyone who has been through engineering school would be confident in a Physicist's ability to transfer into engineering. It's worse - it makes the receiver think that they can get free food for doing *nothing*, and they begin depending on something that's unsustainable. Oh then, maybe give it to a charity? Are charities really the most efficient at converting capital into solving the world's problems? If so - which ones, and would it permanently solve the problem at hand? (and why aren't more engineers/smart people going to charities if it's so important) Maybe a more efficient and sustainable means of capital allocation is placing it towards an infrastructure that doesn't pollute the climate (i.e. mass-manufacturing electric vehicles), or makes sure humanity prevails during a catastrophic event on Earth (i.e. living on Mars) Also - if you think spending money is so easy as a billionaire, why doesn't Elon just take its $120B net worth and make 24 gigafactories simultaneously? Wrong, they only accept those with talent, their factory isn't worse than other places. People can unionize but Tesla don't like it. When a $40,000 Lexus from 1990 is more reliable and still capable of driving down the road with no major repairs than your 2020 Tesla Model S/X for $100k, even though it's fully electric, you have a serious problem. The most common problems Tesla have is how they are a bit too technical and customers ask for help with their features even though they are found in the manual. Tesla have sent the legacy automakers into a scare where they are now scrambling to get batteries and make compelling competition at affordable price. How long it will last? Let's ask that about the other automakers. Tesla have over a decade of experience with electric cars. The others are stuck with their unreliable compliance cars and hybrids which will cost a fortune to service. They've barely started. Some will go bankrupt.

Tesla's 5+ years ahead on EV and battery technology. Every electric vehicle produced by other auto manufacturers is demonstrably inferior to Tesla's lineup in range, quality, price, or any combination of those factors. Many brand new competing electric vehicles aren't even as good as the 2012 Model S. SpaceX has the launch market by the throat. Falcon 9 (and Heavy) is the only reusable orbital booster in service. Nobody else has even attempted a propulsive landing, much less a reuse, while there are F9 cores with 5+ trips to space. When Starship starts flying, it will be the first and only fully reusable heavy lift launcher. Every other option will be technically and financially obsolete. Space X is also the world's largest satellite operator by number of spacecraft. Elon's not some super greedy anti competitive robber baron. He wants widespread adoption of the technologies his companies are developing. So why is nobody competing with him? Car companies are mostly making token gestures toward EVs, while still focusing on ICE development. Every other launch provider in the world is still pushing ahead with a next generation of expendable launchers (not counting Blue Origin, but they haven't sent a single kg to orbit on one of their own vehicles.) Even China hasn't managed to copy Tesla/SpaceX to any significant degree. The lack of serious competition is mind boggling, especially considering what we've seen in tech industries in the last 20 years. These companies are ending up in pseudo monopolistic positions because of pure technological advantage through constant innovation. That should not be sustainable, but somehow they're doing it. The world needs to catch up and compete. It will be good for Elon, and better for everyone.

A bad government will simply stay there, while a bad company will not last very long. Sure some last an additional few years but looking at history, no company that focuses on anything other than the consumer lasts that long. One thing that has happened recently with tech companies is they started out amazing, consumer focused and experienced tremendous growth because of it. However once they achieve the majority of the market share they stagnate and go bad. This doesn’t mean they immediately collapse, they can coast for a good while on their market share and previous success.

Essentially, SpaceX adapted a lot of the technology from the _Dragon_ cargo spacecraft to the _Crew Dragon_ system, which gave them _years_ of head start over everyone else.

Yes much of what was in Cargo Dragon went into Crew Dragon but Boeing did have the X-37B to draw upon but didn't due to ITAR restrictions.
