This Video covers the proper way to load & unload your primary and secondary weapons.
If you surf the internet, you’ll find literally millions (with an M) of shooting videos. Several are pretty good, very informative, and professionally done. However, these videos don’t get many views or hits. Now, flip to the other extreme, and there are tons of videos showing very entertaining jackassery with firearms that, while filmed professionally, are down right unsafe. These get millions of views within seconds of them being posted.
When we at Tactical Rifleman were first contemplating making instructional youtube videos, we didn’t give a shit about being entertaining to the masses. What we wanted to do was build a place where operators, professionals, and gun-loving citizens could go to find good information on guns, gear, and training.
This video is the textbook example of what we wanted to do. While it is a simple and boring video; it sets a standard that is repeatable while also explaining why we do it the way we do. Every operator or student that attends one of our pistol/carbine courses has to learn the proper standard for loading and unloading their weapons. Now, while it does vary slightly by unit; most will agree with the need for this standard. There is a method to the madness.
Why do we load the Pistol first? Well, because it can then be placed securely in a holster that protects the trigger mechanism of the weapon. If we had loaded the rifle first, it would have been left hanging loaded, bouncing around on the front of our kit, while we we loading our pistol. We teach to always have positive control of a loaded firearm. Make sense?
Why to we check the sights? To make sure they work. This may be the last time you look at them before getting on the helicopter. Better to find out now, before getting on the bird, while you still have time to get fresh batteries or replace a broken fiber-optic sight before a match. Make sense?
Why load from your “Speed Reload” pouch? It’s just one more repetition… one more rehearsal of a speed reload; kept fresh in your subconscious mind. That’s the one reload that HAS to be SMOOTH & FAST; why wouldn’t you want to practice it every time you load? Make sense?
So, they learn these skills and techniques when they attend our courses, along with a thousand other little tidbits of information. Now, what happens two years later, when the Gunny tells the Lance Corporal to “go teach the new privates how to properly load & unload their weapons”? That Lance Corporal can now go to the web, watch this video to refresh the standards in his memory, and he can go out and teach a great class. Also, if the Lance Corporal screws it up, the Gunny can then send all the privates to go watch this video (while he sweet talks the Lance Corporal).
Our intent is to give you a place to go to find good information on guns, gear, and training. The other sites are fun to surf when you need a good laugh. However, when you need good tips and techniques, you can always turn to Tactical Rifleman. So, subscribe to this site. Share it with your friends. Add comments and questions. Thanks for watching. Strength & Honor, TR.

Good information thanks. My question is on the unload. After going thur your steps why not dry fire unloaded guns in safe direction? It is my habit after I fired last shot at range with my rifle to clear it by dry firing after closing bolt. Sometimes I will also with bolt open hold trigger to rear while closing bolt. Not sure if this is recommended but it was how my uncle Tommy showed me. He was Airborne so I listened. Then I put it in the case an go home. I do same with the AR.
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 6 лет назад
Great technique and I do it often also. However, not ALWAYS. Sometimes you are not in a safe area and don't have a safe direction. The military has hundreds of NDs, in combat zones at the chow hall, while soldiers "dry fire" into the clearing barrel. That's why it is there. I'm not saying your habit is wrong, and many units do it that way. However, NOT all units do, so I left that portion out. Be Safe. Thanks for watching. TR.

Tactical Rifleman Great point. I forget I'm just a civilian now at the range..plinking an when I was a bubble head on a submarine the only fighting we did was running off the sub to the EM club for drinks although fights would break out there sometimes. Lol.
@Strugacz
@Strugacz 6 лет назад
I was going to ask the same. You was clearly at the range like always in your vids and there’s always some safe direction. Even in crowded space good chamber check and dry fire into the ground in front of you will be a safe direction?
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 6 лет назад
Again, not all units do it this way. That said, I always do it when packing up before I leave the range. I don't store guns with springs compressed. If your personal SOP is to dryfire at the end of the unloading procedure, I support you. Thanks for watching, TR.

When in doubt, Press Check. I also Dry Fire when I'm done on the range and packing up my guns to leave. However, it is not done every time we unload, because we are not always in locations with a "Safe Direction." Some units do, some units don't. So, I chose to leave both out of this video. Thanks for asking. Strength & Honor, TR.

Check out SOFLETE, Stew Smith, the MARSOC Prep app, or Mountain Athlete for workouts. I recommend SOFLETE, started by current and former Green Berets. Also, jump into some OCRs (Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, Bonefrog, etc) and GORUCK Tough/Heavy events. If you can crush a GORUCK Heavy (24 hours), or even better a Heavy-Tough-Light (~40 hours), you'll be well on your way to being ready physically and mentally for Recon. Also, get yourself a copy of "Fixing your Feet" by John Vonhof, and you can thank me later.

This G-34 was a Retirement Gift from my last unit. It has the Nos Defions Logo engraved on both grips and is dear to my heart. That said, I try to carry whatever the students are carrying. So, I also train with G23s, G19s, G43s, 1911s, and the M-9. We haven't got any classes in with the Army's new SIG, but I'm sure I'll have to start training with it soon. So, yes, I guess I do change depending on mood and situation. Thanks for watching, Strength & Honor, TR.

G-23 Gen-III, with a 40 to 9mm conversion barrel (9mm is everywhere on the planet); Trijicon HD sights; and a 3.5 pound connector; running Barnes TAC-XPD ammo. Everything else on it is stock. I have probably 50k rounds through that gun. Every malfunction was traced back to cheap practice ammo. If I'm in a "safe area" and wearing minimal clothing; I've been running a new G-43 with a Crimson Trace Green Laser and Light; same 3.5 connector; same Trijicon HS sights. Only have a couple thousand rounds through it, but again, it is new. I'm actually wearing it while I type right now.

Tactical Rifleman It's ok It was not a negative criticism, just a question. 😉 I want to learn your way and I use lot of tips from your videos. I mean, you put the fresh mag, you release the bolt catch and after that I personaly learn to pull the bolt for 2 cm to see the round chambered and put the finger to feel it. Is that what you call the "press check"? I don't see you do this, so I want to know the way you're doing. Thanks for your answers and sorry for my poor english.

I’m sorry sir I know you have tons of experience but for me I always do a press check to verify a round has been chambered. In my real life experience when you have that rifle up and are about to pull the trigger You absolutely need to know in your head there is a round in the chamber. I want no question in my mind. Takes a split second to verify what you have.

Has a third party ever verified that he is who he said and had the experience he claims? Not accusing him of lying, it just seems like a lot of embellished terminology. He clearly knows how to handle a weapon and its parts, I'm just curious on if anyone has.

Jake, we have over 100 great videos out, and you're the first guy (not really) to call me a fraud. I would take it personal, but this is the internet and, well, I don't really give a shit. I did 25 years in the military and don't have to impress anyone anymore. I enjoy sharing my lessons and experiences so that others can learn from and not make the same mistakes I did. We put out a new video every Friday. Enjoy them or not; I don't care. I'll still be here. Thanks for Watching. Strength & Honor, TR.

Tactical Rifleman I clearly said I wasn't accusing you of lying, I was curious as to if anyone has vouched for you. I was as polite in asking as I thought I could be without sounding like I'm kissing ass. I do watch your videos and I'll agree the content is great, I was simply asking.

Jake, I'll admit that there are fakes out there, and I hate hearing about them, because they should be shot on sight. Seriously. So, I just kinda take it personal. No disrespect intended. We value having you as a viewer. Thanks for watching. TR.

Tactical Rifleman That's understandable, people take the title without the burdens and work. No harm done, I'd be the same way. Keep up the work.

Seriously that comment is really inappropriate. Eric served our Country with honor and I am very proud of him. Don't we have enough problems in our Country without tearing each other down? GOD Bless AMERICA 🇺🇸

For pistol unload, there is also a different method that requires to first lock the slide back, clearing the chamber, then remove the magazine. The idea behind this method is to first make the gun safe, then further manipulate it to remove the magazine and store the gun.

Alexandru PRICOP you know how many ADs/NDs have happened because of your method ? A lot. Always remove the source of ammunition first. Always it’s really not even up for debate.

Amen!!! Wow, I can't believe Alex actually believes that a "Bad" technique, such as locking the slide first, is even worth defending. Wicked, thanks for chiming in. Strength & Honor, TR.

Tactical Rifleman spend one day watching a platoon of cherries clearing their weapons and he would understand.

I can see equal potential for accidental or negligent discharge if you remove the mag with a round in the chamber especially if you have to brake the grip in order to reach the mag release button (eg. people with smaller hands using glocks) or if you first lock the slide back and then remove the mag. It all depends on what you are doing with that handgun. Accidental / negligent discharge is a result of lack of training and / or attention. It's true, I don't have your experience (if I did, I wouldn't be a subscriber to your channel ;) ), but I am no couch warrior either.

Alexandru PRICOP who did you learn this “technique” from ? The reason the source of ammunition is removed FIRST is to mitigate the possibility of rechambering due to lack of training/sleep deprivation and all around dumb fuckery. The sequence is to remove the source then observe the chambered round. You see with your eyes the weapon is clear then you double check with feeling and some people go as far as to triple check by racking the weapon 5 more times. The potential for you to rechamber a round with your method is double due to a mistake. There’s a reason the “pros” follow the military in their methods.

Is it possible to have a SWCC guy tell something? I don't know why, but I just love SWCC and I love this channel. So I thought that it would be a great combination

Have SWCC reach out to us. We value all potential content, and are willing to bring in an SME, so long as it is constructive content that follows the theme of our website.
