Spider-Man: Homecoming featured quite a few characters from the wider MCU. I decided to explore how to film handles these connections better than most, and why the MCU works.

Apparently the "8 years later" thing isn't a continuity problem because The Avengers took place a few years before 2012? Whoops. My bad guys, I was mislead by a lot of online buzz about it. I should of known Marvel was probably on top of this. Thanks for the clarification!

captainmidnight It still doesn't jive with Thunderbolt Ross's statement in Civil War that the Avengers have been active for four years. If Avengers occurred in 2009 or 2012, either way, Civil War happened four years later. Then four more years later....aka six months later.....Spider-Man Homecoming. It doesn't add up.

People seem to forget that Thor's vision is what made him come into Avengers Tower while the others were fighting and use Mjolnir's lightning to create, well, Vision. Vision, in turn is what helped them beat Ultron. So Thor's dream scene, while admittedly putting too much emphasis on future films, does serve a very important purpose in the film itself. I think Thor's vision, while not perfect, is getting too much unfair criticism...

Another thing that people forget is that serving the purposes of the greater picture DOES, by default, serve the purpose of the film it's in, because that film is part of the greater picture just as much as it is it's own thing.

Personally, had the committee given Whedon more space to breathe, pretty sure he could've made that Thor soon mesh better with the rest of AoU. I mean, the extended deleted scene of it already makes more sense tham what we got. In the end, it was studio meddling and compromise that really hurt Thor's arc in AoU.

The Kingpin story would be a perfect future sequel for this Spider-Man. He starts working for the Bugle and learns a lot about how media can change reality and how certain things can be covered. This would also be an interesting idea for a film in general, as it's something that hasn't quite been touched on in previous MCU films (maybe Daredevil Season 1 a little)

The Avengers: "We don't wanna kill you, but we will." That's the difference between them and the Justice League. The Avengers (at least in the MCU) genuinely put me on edge. These imperfect powerful people setting out to save the world no matter the cost. And the costs have been shown. Stark is unhinged and consulting in his goals, always believing he's right. However, this might just be my own take on the unique on the MCU and I love it. Wouldn't change it for the world, it feels so real. Post-Scriptum: Infinity War was spectacular.

Yes please the Kingpin in Spider-Man ! Actually what the film shows about Tony Stark making money out of the destruction is the first reason why Peter switches sides in Civil War... so that's definitely something he can understand. Another thing : I was wondering why the Vulture doesn't kill Peter when he has the chance at the end of the film. After rewatching it I realised that it's because he's not a murderer he's à thieve. When he kills the first Shocker you can clearly see that it wasn't his intention.

If you put attention to the Thor scene you'll knew that is not a teaser for IW or Thor Ragnarok. Thor knew by the vision (no pun intended), if he created Vision, Ultron Will be terminated. That's what he saw. In the alternate scene, he was "possesed" and told Selvig a death Will be necessary. It made sense when Quicksilver died but not when Vision was born. I feel like Whedon could find another way yo include both and still make sense. But anyway. I didn't feel it forced. And about the whole 8 years thingy, it's been said that Avengers took place in 2009, not 2012. It's not a continuity error.
@moreeyecandy
@moreeyecandy 7 лет назад
Novak - I like what you said, but keep in mind, it was also foreshadowing for both Ragnarok and IW. It explains why Thor cares about Vision being brought to LIFE, since the Mind Stone connects it all whereas in the comics, it's the Soul Stone. Vision even claims to be a champion of LIFE (like Warlock in the comics) and includes Ultron in that as well, while recognizing that Ultron must be removed since he will never stop until all life on Earth is exterminated.
@thomcomcastrmt173
@thomcomcastrmt173 7 лет назад
There was additional scenes to flow the twins better, to engage the audience into Ragnorok and IW better, etc. It was a creativity control power struggle that Whedon AND Feige battled during Phase 2.

Guys I posted this on the reddit marvel page and this may explain the 8 year problem. What if the 8 year title card wasnt meant to be 8 years after Civil War or the Avengers, but 8 years after Iron Man 2. Listen to me real quick, Before Homecoming was released, Marvel confirmed that the little boy wearing the Iron Man helmet was indeed a young Peter Parker. They had no need to confirm that and especially no need to do so right before the movie was released. I dont know the years and the exact time Iron Man 2 was released and if it were really 8 years before Homecoming but seeing how the boy, young peter, looks to be around 6 or 7... maybe 8ish to be honest, it does make sense seeing how Peter is 15 at the time of Homecoming. I dont really know if Im right, and this videos been out for a long time now but I posted this on reddit and not a lot of people were able to see it since hundreds of posts get posted daily, but if im somewhat right please upvote this so Captain Midnight can see and hopefully shine some light on the topic. Thanks!

The scene where Howard speaks to his son through the screen while previously having shooed the younger tony away was quite a good moment. It showed he seemed like an uncaring father from Tony' point of view back then, but ultimately he wanted his future generation to do well. Also Howard getting drunk on camera and saying "Today I'd like to present...my ass." was a small underestimated moment. Firstly, it shows Howard can also get a little too heavy on the drinking (I'm assuming he was drunk, but if he wasn't it then shows my next point). But also, it shows how just like Tony, Howard also could get a little panicky and awkward if he's anxious, scared, etc like he was in that video. Howard seemed lost eventually after several takes of trying to get the promotion video. Tony has the same qualities too, and the moment Howard starts talking seriously in the video (like when he starts speaking to the camera as if it's Tony), THAT's when Tony started listening and looking at the screen! it showed Tony was surprised his father could ever love him so much. Really small yet powerful scene overall...

I thought it was pretty good until tony stark just drove a fricking f 1 car. Maybe its because I'm an f1 fan but there are so many reasons he'd be dead. For me it made it feel like a kids movie. Also how the baddie who's name I can't even remember (says a lot) wasn't dead after being ran over 5 times for what felt like a gag is just straight up dumb

Sorry but I disagree with the 8 YEARS LATER title card being an error. It can't possible be, I just can't believe it. Kevin Fiege himself would have had to read and approve the script, as well as the final cut of the film. There's also a line that The Vulture says, something like "8 years without any trouble from those bozos at Stark tower". If it was an error, out of all the people making the film, at least one person would have picked up on it and changed the title card/edited the line in post. I reckon they'll come out publicly with some new version of the timeline but that's just my $0.02 anyway.

gerizzyYMcrew Except it definitely contradicts the line where Senator Ross says that the Avengers have been active for only four years in Civil War. Civil War takes place in 2016, so that implies Avengers was in 2012. Additionally, in the TV shows, it is constantly referenced that the "incident" took place in 2012. So, regardless of which source is right, there is a contradiction.
@zakiyyaemerson5195
@zakiyyaemerson5195 6 лет назад
MasterPoppers I thought Ross said they'd been operating w/o jurisdiction or acting on their own accord because in The Avengers, they were employees of SHEILD and acted on SHEILDS orders, but when SHEILD fell in 2013, the Avengers continued to act, but on their own accord from 2013-2017 placing Civil War in late 2017 or early 2018 and the avengers in late 2009 or early 2010
@zakiyyaemerson5195
@zakiyyaemerson5195 6 лет назад
Ross said they'd been operating with unlimited power and no supervision. I interpreted that as SHEILD was supervising their actions before they fell, but after the fall, they spent another 4 years operating without a government agency as their sponsor of some sort

@zehermanator2710
@zehermanator2710 7 лет назад
DUDE! your kingpin in spiderman theory is exactly what I want here's how they should do it: Ok so how you know how the Avengers tower is getting sold? What if Wilson Fisk buys Avengers tower and makes it Fisk tower? This makes sense since Daredevil is pushing him out of Hell's Kitchen and so he expands into Manhattan and spiderman notices Fisk constructing something and spiderman knows Fisk is a bad man since his arrest was on the News so Spiderman stops Fisks expansion of business and Fisk is angry so he gets Mac Gargan out of prison like he did the Punisher and hires Mac to kill Spiderman, throughout the movie Spiderman is being hunted and on the second encounter with Scorpion Spiderman is on the verge of death and Daredevil shows up and saves Spiderman. Spiderman asks a couple questions like " Who are you?, Do you know who I am I mean my identity?, and What if I need your help again?" Daredevil replies " I'm just a man trying to rinse out the city I love, No I don't know who you are nor do I want to either I respect your privacy, and If ever need my help I'm always listening and I have some friends that can help you too." That's it marvel that right there is how you intertwine the MCU shows and movies together and here's a couple other ways they could introduce the Netflix characters into the MCU Movies via Spiderman: 1. Michelle Jones is Jessica Jones Cousin 2. Aunt May hires Jessica Jones to investigate the crime scene involving Uncle Ben and his killer 3. Aunt May finds Ben's killer and sues him with the help of Matt Murdock and/or Foggy Nelson Or even Jeri Hogarth or Foggy's Ex girlfriend (I don't remember her name) 4. Aunt May learns karate lessons at colleen wing's dojo Marvel pick one or all and PLEASE DO IT!

I like Idea of King Pin being the brains behind Scorpion in the next movie. Spider-Man should be in one episode of Dardevil too. It’s seems like they think it would be hard to do but why not ONE episode. Spider-Man and Daredevil help each other out with something. Have a conversation about Defenders and Avengers and Spidey will call Daredevil if they ever need them. And then Defenders show up in a big battle scene to help Avengers fight off Thano’s goons. Then that’s it. In Defenders episodes maybe have it take place a little while after Infinity war, mention it and then it’s over with. Also Ghost Rider and Punisher would be cool. Go ALL OUT for like 5 min in the movie. Why not.
@CamryLong
@CamryLong 7 лет назад
You know, I think that you make a fairly great point about connections. Thanos at the end of The Avengers, Thor's hammer at the end of Iron Man 2, these things are cool and memorable, but they are pretty much there for two reasons: to sell tickets to future movies for the studio, and to distract the viewer from the fact that it IS selling tickets to future movies for the filmmakers. James Gunn, Scott Derrickson and the dudes behind Homecoming understand this. Guardians has more or less subtle nods to weird and wacky characters that may never really be used, but it makes fans happy just to know they are there. Doctor Strange allowed glimpses into the darker and dustier corners of the Marvel world such as the Vishanti, Agamoto, the various dimensions, and a few other concepts without distracting from what was a very intriguing but not overly complicated story with some real human moments and emotions, also asking the viewer questions about morality and other things. I feel like the Homecoming writers made a big effort to have some moments of connection, and even Iron Man being a main character, without distracting from the fact that it is a Spider-Man movie, and not really reminding us about future movies.

Did anyone catch that subtle nod to the Defenders. When Tony rescues Peter from drowning, he tells him there are certain people who take care of villians like the vulture, Peter says the Avengers but Tony tells him a little below their pay grade.

Starting Spider-man's timeline twice is confusing, but I like the fact that they're taking elements from the Ultimate Spider-man cartoons to make Spider-Man awesome. The new Spider-Man should have like live action tv miniseries or a cameo in one of the Marvel Netflix series. Anyway I think Spider-Man with powers and gadgets is awesome.

When I saw the "8 years later..." part, I didn't think 'continuity error', I merely took away from it that the MCU's timeline moves a bit faster than real life.

I wish there was a video titled "Marvel movies as DC movies", where they take random mentions of catastrophic events and (whereas in MCU movies, there isn't discussion) the one line is turned into an entire 4 minute edit of all the things that caused it, came from it, and were it. (Such as Tony mentioning his dad in Homecoming. (You gotta admit that in a batman movie that quote would've ended up having a replay of the Wayne parent's death. (You gotta.)))

8 years later is correct. All Phase One films have a correct timeline. Phase 2 had a couple of continuity errors and Phase 3, Civil War & Spider-Man have fixed these and gotten back on track. Iron Man and Iron Man 2 are 6 months apart. Thor, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2 take place in roughly the same week. And it all started in 2008. Then Nick Fury says,, in The Avengers, that S.H.I.E.L.D. are making WMDs because of the events in Thor 1 year ago. I.E Avengers is 2009, 8 years before Spider-man. They switched dates before and nobody seemed to care or notice (??) Now they've been trying to switch them back to the first year of all this to make it fit. Nobody says that just because they're the most successful at these they have gotten everything right all the time. but this is just a semi-retcon.

Homecoming bridges between Civil War and Infinity War in two really significant ways - both the Tony/Peter prodigy arc AND the running theme of how Steve's somewhat naive ideals contrast with reality. Cap's inclusion is way more than an easter egg. It's a reminder of who he is and what he stands for. Your issue with Chitauri is an example of Whedon's biggest flaw. As amazing as he is at building characters, he never applies this same talent on a bigger scale than the core cast. It was the exact same thing with Buffy the Vampire Slayer - in which there are several revelations about demon characters like Spike and Clem having significant relatable elements of humanity - yet Buffy continues to simply slay cannon fodder demons at first sight as if nothing changed.

Oh hell yeah! Spiderman and kingpin would be a very smart choice as we have never had him on the big screen (I am NOT going to count Affleck Daredavil Kingpin) also, the upcoming spiderman game has kingpin taking a seemingly major role. Not only that, kingpin is not a world threat level villian, he is just small enough to fly under the avengers radar, and we could even have a Daredavil cameo/role in it.

It's "8 Years Later" because Avengers takes place in 2008. Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and the last part of First Avenger all take place in the same week, and Avengers happens soon afterward. That puts Homecoming in 2016, which is exactly where it should be given its relation to the events of Civil War

With the 8 years later thing they are just saying the first avengers movie and some of the ones before that take place around the same time in 2010.
7 лет назад
Owen Macias In Avengers movie itself it's clearly showed 2012, also Civil Brawl happened 4 years later (according to general Ross) and Homocumming (again, according movie itself) takes place 2 month since Spider-Man was rekt by Captain America and g.Ant-man. Marvel fucked up big time in this one. Unless Dr. Strange won't crack time line to expand this it will be just as bad (if not worse) as Hawkeye battling Chitauri footage in the very beginning of Avengers movie. Ironically that Ultimate Universe which serves MCU as primary inspiration for lore and characters had continuity problems too.
@jeremiahtrotter1687

They did phase 1 originally putting all the movies together in the chronology in the 2008-2009 area. Then, going forward in phase 2 all the movies were set contemporary to release. Though I'm sure there are continuity weirdness seeing some dates before that plan fully went into effect I'm confident this is how the MCU intends to structure its timeline. This means Avengers happened in 2009 and Iron Man 3 happened in 2013 (which was the start of the contemporary movie trend). All the Phase 2 movies even have plot points that make up for what the characters were doing in that time. So, I think thats whats real.

The thing about the Netflix marvel stuff is that it feels like a parallel universe that split off after the first avengers movie. Unlike agents of shield that's always running parallel to the movies, I really don't expect Daredevil to show up on silver screen any time soon

That scene from AOU has far more meaning than I think viewers realize. Without that scene, Thor shouldn't give a crap about ensuring the Vision is brought to life. Vision, as we will likely see is basically Life's Champion in the MCU (replacing Warlock from the comics). It's a shame that Disney cut it down the way they did because with the full scene shown on the DVD in the deleted scenes it helps make it clearer, imho. That scene is also the motivating force for Thor to leave Earth at the end of AOU and explains his absence from Civil War and is likely going to be proved integral to both Ragnarok and Infinity War.

I think the best part of homecoming is the title At first I was like "What? I get that there is a homecoming happening but why is it the title" But it makes sense when you think about the villain, The vulture does not seem to be related to the title until you find out about him being the dad of peters crush that he is taking to homecoming. I never have went to a homecoming but I imagine boys fearing about there date having a threatening and strict father.
