Me: “wow, this video is almost 40 mins long…I’ll just watch a little now and the rest later” Also me: *watches the whole thing in one sitting* The amount of respect and praise I have for the animators, directors, and after affects artists doubled after watching this. I can’t wait until the 3rd movie ❤

Editing is HIGHLY underrated. The amount of recaps, ideas, perspectives, and even foreshadowing is all accounted for, to have just as much emotional impact on the final product. That's why y'alls content is highly viewed. We're in a generation where we're being spoon-fed information in shotty writing. Understanding how to visually TELL A STORY in most content or anything, is what makes or breaks EVERYTHING.
@Vazar
@Vazar 10 месяцев назад
Not just editing, other aspects of making a movie. For visual storytelling, we should not forget about DPs, they also play a big role. We also have acknowledge sound designers' and light technicians' work. Then there are the "minor" jobs that an avarage person doesn't know about (focus puller, scripter, concept artist, stand photographer and many more I can't even name.) Every job is as important as the other (famous) ones to make films. :)
@heybigchris
@heybigchris 10 месяцев назад
@@Vazar I agree. A whole team working together to deliver this masterpiece. I can see why they delayed Beyond the Spider-Verse since their 2024 projections were cool to know, but promising quality would be something I hope the world can wait for. Especially since this comment might age well if they don't deliver.

To laymen, like me, editing is kinda like air. It's what holds a film together and makes individual shots a cohesive two-hour experience. And also, it's only noticed when it's bad because when the editing's great we don't even realize it's there.

It's not a secret why most people working in animation consider a movie/show has always 3 directors : the storyboarder, the director, and the editor.

I love the transparency from Michael with all of the issues they ran into trying to fit so much content into one movie. I definitely resonated with how Jordan felt when the movie ended. Feeling like we didn't receive the full payoff but that overall , the movie was still great.

In the age of streaming, we're not used to cliffhangers like this. I was shocked, but loved it. I'm now more excited for the next one than I think I would be.

In a few years people will be able to see all three movies back-to-back. That will take away a little something, like thinking about what you just saw and imagining what might come later, so if someone hasn't seen them before, then maybe wait at least a day between episodes. Right now, I imagine what might happen on Earth-42, and even if the movie's the same way, the anticipation will then be gone. Maybe I'll hold on to alternatives ideas, like what might have happened?

The next night with my dad which was almost better because I got to watch it thru his eyes for the first time and he was blown away. He then wanted to watch it again so we went again the next night after a few drinks. I heard so many people say this, that ATSV was the first time they went to the theater to watch the same movie more than once, which really tells you something about this movie (I went *three* times myself). Man I LOVED the cliffhanger. The frustration feels good. Even if the third movie never comes out I am extremely satisfied with what the first two are. I'd definitely say that the cliffhanger is earned, not that I have the technical vocabulary to explain why.
@sandal_thong8631
@sandal_thong8631 9 месяцев назад
It's not whether the cliffhanger was earned or not, it's whether the twist was earned. Someone did a video discussing good and bad twists. Some bad twists are so far out in left field that no one could imagine it and there's no reason for it other than to trick an audience (and perhaps the ending was released online so it's their revenge). A good twist has hints that some in the audience could get, but others might not and will have to watch it again to see the hints and foreshadowing. I think the masterpiece was _The Sixth Sense._
@beepbow8444
@beepbow8444 9 месяцев назад
@sandal_thong8631 idk I think miles being the prowler in a universe without spiderman is a pretty great 'twist' anyway. I had a great time watching the movie and I'm really interested in seeing how the two of them interact and how he changes the story. It's not just a twist though, and the part of the conversation that I was originally talking about very much *was* focused on the cliffhanger, not the twist. The twist is fine, but it's made better by setting up a great cliffhanger and some very fun speculation for the next movie imo.

Yes yes yes. I've been waiting for this one 🙌Thanks for exploring the post-production pipeline in animation, especially THIS film, with all the moving pieces and rearranging story beats to best tell the narrative. I don't envy the process it took to make ATSV (still building new scenes while the movie is being shipped??) but the result is phenomenal. To live-action editors and filmmakers: there's so much craft you can learn from animated films. Also great job on putting this interview together Hayden! Ton of work to integrate all these visuals but it all came together so well; I'll be rewatching just to study the storyboards/animatics. How often does a PR rep sit in on a podcast?

One minute into watching this video, and I would like to say, yes, the cliffhanger works. The entire movie works in the cliffhanger is the chefs kiss. Let me explain. The fact that this movie goes on for 2 1/2 hours, when the cliffhanger comes, people are crying and begging for more. Nuff said. Now you get another 2 hours to finish this amazing trilogy instead of a quick 20 minute clean up job, which is what we would have gotten had they not broken it into 2 halfs

On the cliffhanger ending: Sure, it's frustrating to tease us with "your resolution is in another movie", but honestly between Miles beating the Spider Society/Miguel and escaping, and then him finally telling his mom (even if it is revealed to be the wrong one), really landed with me as a satsifying *emotional* conclusion. Basically, the movie hit the "character returns home, now changed from his trials" beat...the sweeping things out from under you with the Prowler doesn't feel so much a cliffhanger as a *teaser*. Less "we're holding back the resolution" and more "Don't worry, there's a whole other story after this one"

And because of that i'm not sure if the version i watched when it came out was the international or US version XD, because i remember clearly the spidermen falling off in the training room in from the US version but also remember the yellow text bubbles from the international version. I think there are 4 versions of the movie because i remember that they released a version with the audio fix as in the intro the voice of Gwen was to low compared to the drums (Which i remember in the version i saw) one week later then the US and WW versions and the digital version

That's such an incredible podcast (and the editing of it was top notch as well). I work as a director of animated shorts, and a bit of a Jack of all trades in animation, so I also delve a bit in editing. That timeline of the movie you showed at the beginning nearly gave me a panic attack. I am also concerned by the extreme amount of stress and overwork the animators had to go through to keep reworking (and sometimes throwing out) entire shots that were previously greenlit, due to the constant changing of minds of Phil Lord. Michael did mention a few shots that came in extremely late in the process (the epilogue with Gwen assembling her band), and it now makes sense to me why there is virtually no animation at all in these shots (they're all just standing there for a while, when the camera dollies out). It's because the animators only had a few days to pull that whole scene off before the movie was being sent to the theaters, so they couldn't afford to do anything crazy. That being said, ATSV is easily my movie of the year. I went to watch it 4 times in theaters (the first and the last in IMAX, to fully enjoy it as it should have been). As an animator, I'm forever grateful to all the crazy minds behind the Spiderverse saga to have completely rocked the world of animation, and kicked the Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks supremacy off the throne. Thanks to them, we're in a world where some crazy gems like Arcane, Puss in Boots 2 The Last Wish and TMNT Mutant Mayhem can exist and be praised. And I'm very much looking forward to see the future of CG animation moving forward.

They already do. Anime bends time and space to fit dialogue into its action scenes. From Dragon Ball Z talking between clashes and setting up transformations to Jujutsu Kaisen explaining powers and strategies mid-fight to sports anime with full monologues in a single play. Dialogue mixed into action is a current staple of the medium.
